Evidence for altered structure and impaired mitochondrial electron transport function in selenium deficiency.

Selenium (Se) deficiency in the experimental models, Coturnix coturnix japonica and Corcyra cephalonica, resulted in impaired mitochondrial substrate oxidations and lowered thiol levels. Studies with respiratory inhibitors confirmed reduced mitochondrial electron transport enzyme activities, especially at cytochrome c oxidase (COX), the terminal segment. Enhanced mitochondrial lipid peroxidation in Se deficiency was more pronounced in the heart tissue of the quail compared to other tissues. Glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity toward H2O2 and cumene hydroperoxide were generally low in the …

Acute oral toxicity of sodium cyanide in birds.

Sensitivities of six avian species, black vulture (Coragyps atratus), American kestrel (Falco sparverius), Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus), eastern screech-owl (Otus asio), and European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), to acute poisoning by sodium cyanide (NaCN) were compared by single dose LD50's. Three species, domestic chickens, black vultures, and turkey vultures (Cathartes aura), were dosed with NaCN to determine cyanide residues in those that died and also in survivors, in addition to postmortem fate. Three flesh-eating species (black vulture, America…

Disrupted microbiota-barrier-immune interaction in phthalates-mediated barrier defect in the duodenum.

As one of the most used phthalates, Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widespread environmental contaminant. Extremely persistent plastic can enter the food chain of animals through the aquatic environment, affect metabolic pathways and cause damage to the digestive system. But the molecular mechanism of its toxic effects on the duodenum in birds has not been elucidated. To investigate the toxicity of phthalates in the duodenum, quails were gavaged with 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg doses of DEHP for 45 days, and water and oil control groups were retained. This study revealed that subchronic ex…

Mucolytic and antitussive effects of erdosteine.

To investigate the influence of erdosteine, a new homocysteine-derived expectorant, on airway clearance we studied the effects of the drug on the viscosity of mucin, on the mucociliary transport rate in quails, on airway secretion in rats and on the cough reflex in guinea-pigs. The active metabolite of erdosteine, M1 (10 microM to 1 mM), significantly reduced the viscosity of porcine stomach mucin. Erdosteine by itself did not reduce viscosity. Erdosteine significantly promoted mucociliary transport in quails and increased airway secretion in rats. The effect was still apparent 24h after admin…

Large intestine in pheasant (phasianus colchicus) and see-see partridge (ammoperdix griseogularis). A comparative morphological and histological study.

Anatomical and histological studies of the large intestine in birds are essential for necropsy and histopathological examinations. On the other hand, large intestine plays a critical role in the immune system and absorption. The present study's objective was to provide information about the morphological, morphometric and histological characteristics of the large intestine in see-see partridges (Ammoperdix griseogularis) and pheasants (Phasianus colchicus). These two members of the Galliformes order are found in large areas of Iran. In this study, ten male see-see partridges and ten male pheas

Exposure to artificial light at night increases innate immune activity during development in a precocial bird.

Humans have greatly altered Earth's night-time photic environment via the production of artificial light at night (ALAN; e.g. street lights, car traffic, billboards, lit buildings). ALAN is a problem of growing importance because it may significantly disrupt the seasonal and daily physiological rhythms and behaviors of animals. There has been considerable interest in the impacts of ALAN on health of humans and other animals, but most of this work has centered on adults and we know comparatively little about effects on young animals. We exposed 3-week-old king quail (Excalfactoria chinensis) to…

First detection of herpesvirus and hemosporidians in the endangered Pyrenean Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus aquitanicus).

Pathogens affect wild bird populations worldwide, contributing to their decline. Considering the scarce health data regarding the endangered Pyrenean Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus aquitanicus), we molecularly surveyed selected pathogens (Newcastle disease virus, Avian influenza virus, Chlamydia psittaci, avian pathogenic Escherichia coli, Campylobacter jejuni, and Salmonella spp.) in 30 Pyrenean Capercaillie feces collected in the field (Catalonia, northeastern Spain). Additionally, swab and tissue samples from eight wild Pyrenean Capercaillies of Catalonia and Andorra were molecularly tested

Transforming growth factor beta2 is negatively regulated by endogenous retinoic acid during early heart morphogenesis.

Vitamin A-deficient (VAD) quail embryos lack the vitamin A-active form, retinoic acid (RA) and are characterized by a phenotype that includes a grossly abnormal cardiovascular system that can be rescued by RA. Here we report that the transforming growth factor, TGFbeta2 is involved in RA-regulated cardiovascular development. In VAD embryos TGFbeta2 mRNA and protein expression are greatly elevated. The expression of TGFbeta receptor II is also elevated in VAD embryos but is normalized by treatment with TGFbeta2-specific antisense oligonucleotides (AS). Administration of this AS or an antibody s…

Effect of supplementation of valine to chicken extender on sperm cryoresistance and post-thaw fertilization capacity.

Recent reports showed a positive correlation between frozen-thawed rooster sperm DNA integrity and the concentrations of valine in seminal plasma. The present study evaluated the effect of supplementing valine to semen extender for freezing sperm of 2 endangered local Spanish chicken breeds with different sperm cryoresistance: Red Villafranquina (VF) showing low sperm DNA integrity after cryopreservation and Quail Castellana that shows higher DNA integrity. One pool of semen per breed was obtained twice a week for 10 wk (n = 40, 20 per breed). Each pool was divided into 2 fractions. One of the…

The development of excitatory neurons in the chick cloaca.

INTRODUCTION: The enteric nervous system of the chick embryo hindgut is derived from the vagal and sacral neural tube. Nerve cells from thes … gion was microsurgically ablated in ovo and replaced with the corresponding region from age-matched quail embryos. To study the sacral neural tube contribution to the cloaca, the vagal neural tube was ablated at the 10-12 ss, but not replaced with quail neural tube, thus, only the sacral neural crest cells remained. All embryos were harvested at E12 and …

HERG- and IRK-like inward rectifier currents are sequentially expressed during neuronal development of neural crest cells and their derivatives.

Quail neural crest cells were cultured in a differentiative medium to study the inward K+ channel profile in neuronal precursors at various stages of maturation. Between 12 and 24 h of culture, neural crest-derived neurons displayed, in addition to the previously described outward depolarization-activated K+ currents, an inward current enhanced in high K+ medium. A biophysical and pharmacological analysis led us to conclude that this inward K+ current is identical to that previously demonstrated in mouse and human neuroblastoma cell lines (I[IR]). This current (quail I[IR] or ql[IR]), which is…

Phytoremediation of dinitrophenol from wastewater by atriplex lentiformis: effect of salicylic acid.

Quail bush [Atriplex lentiformis (Torr.) S. Wats] plants were used in removing 2, 4-dinitrophenol (DNP) from wastewater in a hydroponic experiment. The hydroponic system contained three doses of DNP, i.e., 0, 10, and 20 mg L-1. Quail bush plants were sprayed with 0.1 mM salicylic acid (SA) to study its role in resisting DNP toxicity. DNP significantly (p < 0.05) reduced plant growth. Exposure of A. lentiformis plants to 20 mg L-1 of DNP reduced the total chlorophyl and relative water content by 39 and 24%, respectively. SA improved the antioxidant defense in terms of ascorbate peroxidase (APX)…

Pax-QNR/Pax-6, a paired box- and homeobox-containing gene expressed in neurons, is also expressed in pancreatic endocrine cells.

After differential screening of a cDNA library constructed from quail neuroretina cells infected with the v-myc containing avian retrovirus MC29, we have isolated a cDNA clone Pax-QNR, homologous to the murine Pax6 which is mutated in the autosomal dominant mutation small eye (Sey) of the mouse and aniridia in man. Here we report the characterization of Pax-QNR/Pax-6 expression in the chicken, quail, and mouse pancreas. In situ hybridization performed with E3 chick embryos demonstrated that, in addition to the documented expression of Pax-QNR/Pax-6 in the neural tube, this gene is also express…

Interactions between somite cells: the formation and maintenance of segment boundaries in the chick embryo.

We have investigated the interactions between the cells of the rostral and caudal halves of the chick somite by carrying out grafting experiments. The rostral half-sclerotome was identified by its ability to support axon outgrowth and neural crest cell migration, and the caudal half by the binding of peanut agglutinin and the absence of motor axons and neural crest cells. Using the chick-quail chimaera technique we also studied the fate of each half-somite. It was found that when half-somites are placed adjacent to one another, their interactions obey a precise rule: sclerotome cells from like…
