Are Human Judgments of Real and Fake Faces Quantum-like Contextual?

This paper describes a crowdsourced experiment in which participants were asked to judge which of two simultaneously presented facial images (one real, one AI-generated) was fake. With the growing presence of synthetic imagery in digital environments, cognitive systems must adapt to novel and often deceptive visual stimuli. Recent developments in cognitive science propose that some mental processes may exhibit quantum-like characteristics, particularly in their context sensitivity. Drawing on Tezzin's "generalized fair coin" model, this study applied Contextuality-by-Default (CbD) theory to in

Nonperturbative S-Matrix Renormalization.

We propose a renormalization group flow equation for a functional that generates S-matrix elements and which captures similarities to the well-known Wetterich and Polchinski equations. While the latter ones, respectively, involve the effective action and Schwinger functional, which are genuine off-shell objects, the presented flow equation has the advantage of working more directly with observables, i.e., scattering amplitudes. Compared to the Wetterich equation, our flow equation also greatly simplifies the notion of going on shell, in the sense of satisfying the quantum equations of motion.

In Silico Methodology for Human Carboxylesterases 1 and 2 Isoforms Substrate Selectivity Study.

The two more relevant isoforms of human carboxylesterases (CES), CES1 and CES2, are responsible for catalyzing the hydrolysis of numerous approved drugs and prodrugs. Elucidating the substrate specificity of each CES isoform is a highly significant topic in medicinal chemistry. The general rule suggests that selectivity toward CES1 or CES2 depends on the relative sizes of the acyl and alkyl moieties present in the substrate structure; however, numerous exceptions to this trend have been reported. In this chapter, stepwise methodologies combining classical molecular mechanics (MM) and hybrid qu

A Quantum Probability Approach to Improving Human-AI Decision Making.

Artificial intelligence is set to incorporate additional decision space that has traditionally been the purview of humans. However, AI systems that support decision making also entail the rationalization of AI outputs by humans. Yet, incongruencies between AI and human rationalization processes may introduce uncertainties in human decision making, which require new conceptualizations to improve the predictability of these interactions. The application of quantum probability theory (QPT) to human cognition is on the ascent and warrants potential consideration to human-AI decision making to impr

Grand canonical equilibrium unifies quantum electrodynamics and statistical mechanics in wet electrolytic environments at room temperature.

Quantum rate (QR) theory has previously shown that the charge-relaxation resistance of ferrocene redox monolayers is locked at Rq = h/2e2 ≈ 12.9 kΩ at room temperature, and that electron-transfer rates are accessible from equilibrium quantum capacitance without kinetic fitting. What has remained without a first-principles thermodynamic explanation is why a room-temperature ionic bath sustains rather than destroys quantum coherence. Here, we provide that mechanism. By applying the fluctuation-dissipation theorem to the grand canonical equilibrium of an electrochemical junction, we show that min

Low-Lying ππ* Excited States in Five-Membered Ring Heterocycles: A Continuing Challenge.

The lowest electronically excited ππ* states of conjugated hydrocarbons, as well as related heterocyclic compounds, pose a significant challenge for quantum chemical calculations. The difficulty arises from the need to achieve a balanced description of excited states with markedly different electronic characters, such as bright vs dark, ionic vs covalent, and singly vs doubly excited states. Here, we focus on the low-lying ππ* states of five-member-ring heterocycles, such as furan, pyrrole and thiophene. We analyze the origins of the diverse excited-state characters from both molecular orbital

Insighting the optoelectronic, charge transfer and biological potential of benzo-thiadiazole and its derivatives.

The current investigation applies the dual approach containing quantum chemical and molecular docking techniques to explore the potential of benzothiadiazole (BTz) and its derivatives as efficient electronic and bioactive materials. The charge transport, electronic and optical properties of BTz derivatives are explored by quantum chemical techniques. The density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent DFT (TD-DFT) at B3LYP/6-31G** level of theory utilized to optimize BTz and newly designed ligands at the ground and first excited states, respectively. Altermagnetic spin textures: Emergent electrodynamics, quantum geometry, and probes.

Emergent electrodynamics arising from spatially and temporally varying magnetic textures provides a framework for spin control in quantum materials. While this principle is established for ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic textures, its consequences for altermagnets-magnetic orders with vanishing net magnetization but finite spin splitting-remain largely unexplored. In this work, we develop an effective low-energy theory of itinerant electrons coupled to smoothly varying altermagnetic spin textures. In the adiabatic regime, we show that altermagnetic textures generate additional emergent ele

Giant Splitting of the Hydrogen Rotational Eigenenergies in the C_{2} Filled Ice.

Hydrogen hydrates exhibit a rich phase diagram influenced by both pressure and temperature, with the so-called C_{2} phase emerging prominently above 2.5 GPa. In this phase, hydrogen molecules are densely packed within a cubic icelike lattice and the interaction with the surrounding water molecules profoundly affects their quantum rotational dynamics. Herein, we delve into this intricate interplay by directly solving the Schrödinger's equation for a quantum H_{2} rotor in the C_{2} crystal field at finite temperature, generated through density functional theory. Our calculations reveal a giant

Machine-Learning Electron Dynamics with Moment Propagation Theory: Application to Optical Absorption Spectrum Computation Using Real-Time TDDFT.

We present an application of our new theoretical formulation of quantum dynamics, moment propagation theory (MPT) (Boyer et al., J. Chem. Phys. 160, 064113 (2024)), for employing machine-learning techniques to simulate the quantum dynamics of electrons. In particular, we use real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT) simulation in the gauge of the maximally localized Wannier functions (MLWFs) for training the MPT equation of motion. Spatially localized time-dependent MLWFs provide a concise representation that is particularly convenient for the MPT expressed in terms of incr

Matrix Product Operator Algebras I: Representations of Weak Hopf Algebras and Projected Entangled Pair States.

Matrix Product Operators (MPOs) are tensor networks representing operators acting on 1D systems. They model a wide variety of situations, including communication channels with memory effects, quantum cellular automata, mixed states in 1D quantum systems, or holographic boundary models associated to 2D quantum systems. A scenario where MPOs have proven particularly useful is to represent algebras of non-trivial symmetries. Concretely, the boundary of both symmetry protected and topologically ordered phases in 2D quantum systems exhibit symmetries in the form of MPOs. In this paper, we develop a

Janus graphene nanoribbons with localized states on a single zigzag edge.

Topological design of π electrons in zigzag-edged graphene nanoribbons (ZGNRs) leads to a wealth of magnetic quantum phenomena and exotic quantum phases1-10. Symmetric ZGNRs typically show antiferromagnetically coupled spin-ordered edge states1,2. Eliminating cross-edge magnetic coupling in ZGNRs not only enables the realization of a class of ferromagnetic quantum spin chains11, enabling the exploration of quantum spin physics and entanglement of multiple qubits in the one-dimensional limit3,12, but also establishes a long-sought-after carbon-based ferromagnetic transport channel, pivotal for

Resolving singularities in gravitational and electrostatic interactions through spatial quantization.

Classical physics assumes continuous spacetime, leading to infinities in forces (e.g., Newtonian gravity, electrostatic force) at zero distance or relativistic energy for objects with non-zero mass at the speed of light. In quantum mechanics, energy is quantized, and the theory differs from classical determinism by replacing trajectories with probabilistic wavefunctions. We propose a foundational framework based on the premise that space itself is composed of indivisible fundamental units ("cosmic elements"), which eliminates infinities by discretizing physical interactions. Space quantization

Modeling high-order harmonic generation in quantum dots using a real-space tight-binding approach.

Recently, the size-dependence of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in quantum dots (QDs) has been investigated experimentally. In particular, for longer driving wavelengths and quantum dots smaller than 3 nm, HHG was strongly suppressed; however, there is no computational model capable of describing the strong-field response of such systems. In this work, we introduce a computationally efficient three-dimensional real-space tight-binding model specifically designed for the simulation of HHG in confined systems. The model parameters are meticulously derived from density functional theory cal

Collective communication in a transparent world: Phase transitions in a many-body Potts model and a social-quantum correspondence.

Digitally connected societies approach a "transparent" regime where all agents can interact without geographic or social barriers-a limit realized by complete graph topologies. We construct a mean-field theory of a q-state Potts model with many-body interactions on this geometry, modeling agents from q distinct communities. Analyzing the illustrative case of competing pairwise and three-body couplings, we identify three equilibrium phases in the thermodynamic limit: symmetric (all communities equal), reduced symmetry (q-1 communities surviving), and consensus (one dominant group). For two-comm

Growth of Mesoscale Ordered Two-Dimensional Hydrogen-Bond Organic Framework with the Observation of Flat Band.

Flat bands (FBs), presenting a strongly interacting quantum system, have drawn increasing interest recently. However, experimental growth and synthesis of FB materials have been challenging and have remained elusive for the ideal form of monolayer materials where the FB arises from destructive quantum interference as predicted in 2D lattice models. Here, we report surface growth of a self-assembled monolayer of 2D hydrogen-bond (H-bond) organic frameworks (HOFs) of 1,3,5-tris(4-hydroxyphenyl)benzene (THPB) on Au(111) substrate and the observation of FB. Vibrationally Mediated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction as the Origin of Chirality-Induced Spin Selectivity in Donor-Acceptor Molecules.

Chirality-induced spin selectivity (CISS) was recently observed in photoexcited donor-chiral bridge-acceptor molecules, but a predictive theory able to explain available experiments is still lacking. Here, we show that torsional modes modulating hopping and spin-orbit coupling give rise to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction between the transferred electron and the one sitting on the donor, producing high spin polarization for realistic parameters. Our model introduces a low-energy scale in the spin dynamics that explains the magnetic field dependence observed in EPR measurements and predicts

Electronic spectra of jet-cooled 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene: Strength in π-electron conjugation and two large-amplitude torsional motions.

To spectroscopically qualify strength in the π-electron conjugation, the electronic spectra of jet-cooled 1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (BPEB) in the region of the transition to the lowest excited singlet (S1) 1B1u state are measured by the fluorescence excitation and the single-vibronic-level dispersed fluorescence methods. Strength is defined as the difference in potential energies between the planar and perpendicular conformations. BPEB possesses two large-amplitude torsional motions, out-of-phase 24 and in-phase 29 modes. The most stable is the planar conformation, and barrier heights at t
