An artificial intelligent diagnostic system on mobile Android terminals for cholelithiasis by lightweight convolutional neural network.

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools have been applied to diagnose or predict disease risk from medical images with recent data disclosure actions, but few of them are designed for mobile terminals due to the limited computational power and storage capacity of mobile devices. In this work, a novel AI diagnostic system is proposed for cholelithiasis recognition on mobile devices with Android platform. To this aim, a data set of CT images of cholelithiasis is firstly collected from The Third Hospital of Shandong Province, China, and then we technically use histogram equalization to preprocess thes

MRI of optic neuritis in a rat model.

Neuritis of the optic nerve is one of the most frequent early symptoms of multiple sclerosis. There are only scarce data correlating magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast alterations with the underlying pathology, that is inflammation, demyelination, and axonal damage. Here we studied optic neuritis in a rat model of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis by comparing in vivo MRI findings from multiple techniques (T1, T2, proton density, magnetization transfer) to histopathology. We further assessed a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier by using Gd-DTPA and indirectly estimated the int

Lung Cancer Detection from CT Images: Modified Adaptive Threshold Segmentation with Support Vector Machines and Artificial Neural Network Classifier.

BACKGROUND: The most difficult aspect of diagnosing lung cancer is early diagnosis. According to the American Cancer Society, each year, there are around 11 million newly diagnosed instances of cancer worldwide. Radiologists often turn to Computed Tomography (CT) scans to diagnose respiratory conditions, which can reveal if lung tissue remains normal or abnormal. However, there is an increased chance of inaccuracy and delay; therefore, radiologists are concerned with the physical segmentation of nodules. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the research is to implement an advanced modified threshold s

PSAA-nnUNet: An Efficient Method for CT Carotid Artery Image Segmentation.

Carotid artery (CA) stenosis (CAS) constitutes a significant factor to ischaemic cerebrovascular events which exhibiting no overt symptoms in the early stages. Early detection of CAS can prevent ischaemic stroke and improve patient prognosis. In this study, we developed a non-invasive CAS automatic assessment method based on deep learning, intended for the early detection of CAS with CT imaging. The method proposed in this paper consists of three main components. First, we utilised thresholding and the Hessian-based Frangi filter to eliminate irrelevant tissue and enhance vascular structures.

HSI-based Vector Graphics Algorithm for Enhanced Detection and 3D Visualization of Pulmonary Lesions on CT.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) enables high-resolution multiplanar and 3D reconstructions in thoracic imaging. However, conventional 3D reconstruction methods are computationally expensive, time-consuming, and require specialized expertise. This short communication introduces a novel algorithm (HGM) based on vector graphics and RGB-to-HSI (hue, saturation, intensity) color-space transformation, designed to provide a low-cost, high-precision tool for visualization and classification of intrathoracic lesions. METHODS: Chest CT DICOM datasets were processed usin

Clinical experience of photon counting breast tomosynthesis: comparison with traditional mammography.

BACKGROUND: In two-dimensional mammography, a well-known problem is over- and underlying tissue which can either obstruct a lesion or create a false-positive result. Tomosynthesis, with an ability to layer the tissue in the image, has the potential to resolve these issues. PURPOSE: To compare the diagnostic quality, sensitivity and specificity of a single tomosynthesis mammography image and a traditional two-view set of two-dimensional mammograms and to assess the comfort of the two techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One hundred and forty-four women, mainly chosen because of suspicious featur

Improvement of dose calculation in radiation therapy due to metal artifact correction using the augmented likelihood image reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Metal artifacts caused by high-density implants lead to incorrectly reconstructed Hounsfield units in computed tomography images. This can result in a loss of accuracy in dose calculation in radiation therapy. This study investigates the potential of the metal artifact reduction algorithms, Augmented Likelihood Image Reconstruction and linear interpolation, in improving dose calculation in the presence of metal artifacts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In order to simulate a pelvis with a double-sided total endoprosthesis, a polymethylmethacrylate phantom was equipped with two steel bars.

Craniosynostosis: a radiological and surgical perspective.

Craniosynostosis is the premature fusion of the cranial sutures. It is identified early in life either due to cosmetic deformity or due to more serious functional complications. Isolated forms of craniosynostosis are much more common and less challenging in their management than their syndromic counterpart. Modern multislice computed tomography and 3D reconstructions have revolutionized surgical planning and follow-up. We review the radiological features of the craniosynostoses, complications, and associated conditions that may alter patient management. Common surgical techniques and postopera

Oblique reconstructions in tomosynthesis. II. Super-resolution.

PURPOSE: In tomosynthesis, super-resolution has been demonstrated using reconstruction planes parallel to the detector. Super-resolution allows for subpixel resolution relative to the detector. The purpose of this work is to develop an analytical model that generalizes super-resolution to oblique reconstruction planes. METHODS: In a digital tomosynthesis system, a sinusoidal test object is modeled along oblique angles (i.e., "pitches") relative to the plane of the detector in a 3D divergent-beam acquisition geometry. To investigate the potential for super-resolution, the input frequency is sp

A Comparative Study of Unsupervised and Deep Learning Methods for Automatic Segmentation of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm on CT Images: Preliminary Results.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Considering that most AAAs remain asymptomatic until they are close to rupture, an efficient workflow for the accurate detection and delineation is crucial for the clinical outcome. In this study, we conduct a comparative analysis of two different AAA segmentation algorithms using X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) images from 18 patients diagnosed with AAA, which have not been used in similar studies before. The methodologies employed include an in-house segmentation algorithm based on conventional image analysis tec

Multi-scale deformable attention fusion network with global context modeling for chest X-ray lesion segmentation.

Chest X-ray segmentation is a critical technique for the screening and diagnosis of common thoracic diseases such as pneumonia and COVID-19, providing essential support for clinical diagnosis and quantitative analysis. However, the inherent challenges of chest X-ray images, including blurry lesion boundaries and irregular contours, pose significant difficulties for accurate segmentation. To address this problem, we propose a Multi-Scale Deformable Attention Fusion Network (MSDAFNet) for lesion segmentation in chest X-rays. MSDAFNet adaptively perceives lesion regions of varying shapes and size
