The Role of Endogenous Antimicrobial Peptides in Modulating Innate Immunity of the Ocular Surface in Dry Eye Diseases.

The ocular surface has the challenging responsibility of maintaining a clear moist refractive surface while protecting the eye from exogenous pathogens and the environment. Homeostasis of the ocular surface, including its innate immune components, is altered in ocular surface disease states. In this review, we focus on antimicrobial peptides and the role they play in the immune response of the ocular surface during healthy states and dry eye diseases. Antimicrobial peptides are of special interest to the study of the ocular surface because of their various roles that include microbial threat n

Research progress on prediction of postoperative intraocular lens position.

With the progress in refractive cataract surgery, more intraocular lens (IOL) power formulas have been introduced with the aim of reducing the postoperative refractive error. The postoperative IOL position is critical to IOL power calculations. Therefore, the improvements in postoperative IOL position prediction will enable better selection of IOL power and postoperative refraction. In the past, the postoperative IOL position was mainly predicted by preoperative anterior segment parameters such as preoperative axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and corneal curvature. In recent ye

Technical notes on peripheral refraction, peripheral eye length and retinal shape determination.

PURPOSE: To give an overview of the misconceptions and potential artefacts associated with measuring peripheral refractive error and eye length, the use of these measures to determine the retinal shape and their links to myopia development. Several issues were identified: the relationship between peripheral refractive error and myopia development, inferring the retinal shape from peripheral refraction or eye length patterns, artefacts and accuracy when measuring peripheral eye length using an optical biometer. METHODS: A theory was developed to investigate the influence of artefacts in measur

Exposure to cyan or red light inhibits the axial growth of zebrafish eyes.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, is the most common type of refractive error and is characterized by a mismatch between the optical power and ocular axial length. Light, and more specifically the spectral composition of light, has been known to influence myopic axial growth. In this pilot study, we exposed zebrafish to illuminations that vary in spectral composition and screened for changes in axial length. The illumination spectra included narrow band ultra-violet A (UVA) (peak wavelength 369 nm), violet (425 nm), cyan (483 nm), green/yellow (557 nm), and red (633 nm) light, as well as broad band

Dioptric differences between clinically determined and metric-optimised refractions for adults with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Refractions based on the optimisation of single-value wavefront-derived metrics may help determine appropriate corrections for individuals with Down syndrome where clinical techniques fall short. This study compared dioptric differences between refractions obtained using standard clinical techniques and two metric-optimised methods: visual Strehl ratio (VSX) and pupil fraction tessellated (PFSt), and investigated characteristics that may contribute to the differences between refraction types. METHODS: Thirty adults with Down syndrome (age = 29 ± 10 years) participated. Three refracti

Off-axis astigmatism in the isolated chicken crystalline lens.

The chicken eye was previously found to have little off-axis astigmatism which is not explained by its special corneal shape but rather by the optical properties of the crystalline lens. To learn more about lens design, we studied off-axis astigmatism in the chicken lens in situ and compared it to a glass lens of similar power but with homogenous refractive index. After euthanasia, enucleated eye balls were cut in the equatorial plane right behind the scleral ossicles. The anterior segment was placed in a water-filled chamber. Several thin laser beams were projected in two perpendicular meridi

Stimulus deprivation myopia in human congenital ptosis: a study of 95 patients.

PURPOSE: To establish differences between the frequency of suspected deprivation myopia in unilateral and bilateral congenital ptosis with and without covered optical axis. METHODS: Ametropia was evaluated in both eyes of 95 patients with congenital ptosis. The amount of refraction was documented as spherical equivalent (100% cycloplegia). Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square and sign tests. RESULTS: In unilateral ptosis, the frequency of myopia was lower (10/68: 15%) than that of hyperopia (58/68: 85%) in the ptotic eye (P <0.001). However, myopia occurred more often in t

[Development of refraction and visual acuity of squinting children (author's transl)].

The refraction and visual acuity rates of 170 children from the age of 2 to the age of 7 suffering from squint were recorded and analysed. On the basis of our investigation we could not prove the process of emmetropisation during the growth of the eyes of squinting children in this age group. That means that the process of emmetropisation of squinting children takes place slower and later than with non-squinting children and is apparently stabilized at an age between 8 and 12 years. On the other hand--the increase of visual acuity of the normal eyes of squinting children is--as a rule-complete

Eye dryness sensations after refractive surgery: impaired tear secretion or "phantom" cornea?

The cornea is richly innervated by various functional types of sensory nerve fibers. When stimulated, these fibers evoke conscious sensations of different quality including ocular dryness, discomfort, and pain. Refractive surgery involves a variable degree of damage to corneal nerves. This leads to an altered expression of membrane ion channels at the injured and regenerating nerve fibers, giving rise to aberrant spontaneous and stimulus-evoked nerve impulse firing. It is speculated that these abnormal sensory discharges are read by the brain as ocular surface dryness. This would explain the h
