PURPOSE: To report endovascular repair of injuries to the external iliac artery during hip surgery.
CASE REPORTS: Two elderly women with histories of chronically infected hip prostheses were found to have iatrogenic leaking pseudoaneurysms of the external iliac artery due to hip surgery trauma in the past. Both were treated successfully with a Jostent Peripheral Stent-Graft. The first patient died 17 months after treatment, and the second was well, with an excluded false aneurysm, at the 6-month follow-up.
CONCLUSIONS: Stent-graft repair may be an appropriate and effective treatment for some

BACKGROUND: Bone mass measurements are widely used to diagnose osteoporosis and identify patients at risk for fractures. Recent studies have shown that reduced bone mass is also predictive of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in healthy postmenopausal women. Among chronic hemodialysis patients reduced bone mass resulting from the combined effects of age-related factors and renal osteodystrophy has been associated with vascular calcification. In traumatic dislocation of the hip with or without a fracture of the acetabular rim, complete anatomical reduction might be prevented by a bone fragment or infrequently by a soft tissue block, such as a torn acetabular labrum, ruptured capsule, or round ligament. We report a rare case of a tear in the acetabular labrum that prevented complete reduction of the dislocated hip. A 26-year-old man suffered posterior dislocation of the right hip, which was reduced under general anesthesia. INTRODUCTION: The aim of the study was to assess: 1) the degree of osteoporosis preventative therapy initiated by general practitioners (GP) after hospitalisation for a hip fracture; 2) the GPs' opinion of osteoporosis preventative therapy, and their opinion on whether it should be initiated by the hospital or the GP; 3) the need for a reference programme.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The GPs of patients discharged after a hip fracture in 1997-1998, were sent two questionnaires: one concerning osteoporosis preventative therapy of the patient and one concerning the GPs' own opinion on prevention.

Over a period of eight years, we implanted a total of 76 cementless hip prostheses in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The clinical results of 47 patients (70 hips) increased from a mean Harris Hip Score of 33 to 85 after an average of 49 months (range 1-11 years). We studied prospectively 499 cases of primary total hip arthroplasty done through an anterolateral approach to establish the early dislocation rate when restrictions on postoperative mobilization were not imposed. There were 3 early dislocations (within 6 weeks of surgery). All were reduced closed, and every patient subsequently achieved a stable hip without further intervention. Seventy-one total hip arthroplasties with a cementless, wedge fit, cobalt chrome femoral component were reviewed in 60 patients at a minimum 10-year followup (mean, 11.5 years). Seventy-six hips in 67 patients were evaluated an average of 119 months (range, 61-150 months) after total hip arthroplasty with porous coated Omnifit femoral and acetabular components. Between July 1989 and June 1994, a consecutive series of 651 cemented total hip arthroplasties were performed in 577 patients using relatively inexpensive implants and standardized surgical and postoperative protocols.
