Golden-angle radial sparse parallel MRI: combination of compressed sensing, parallel imaging, and golden-angle radial sampling for fast and flexible dynamic volumetric MRI.

PURPOSE: To develop a fast and flexible free-breathing dynamic volumetric MRI technique, iterative Golden-angle RAdial Sparse Parallel MRI (iGRASP), that combines compressed sensing, parallel imaging, and golden-angle radial sampling. METHODS: Radial k-space data are acquired continuously using the golden-angle scheme and sorted into time series by grouping an arbitrary number of consecutive spokes into temporal frames. An iterative reconstruction procedure is then performed on the undersampled time series where joint multicoil sparsity is enforced by applying a total-variation constraint alo

New ratios for the detection and classification of CJD in multisequence MRI of the brain.

We present a method for the analysis of deep grey brain nuclei for accurate detection of human spongiform encephalopathy in multisequence MRI of the brain. We employ T1, T2 and FLAIR-T2 MR sequences for the detection of intensity deviations in the internal nuclei. The MR data are registered to a probabilistic atlas and normalised in intensity prior to the segmentation of hyperintensities using a foveal model. Anatomical data from a segmented atlas are employed to refine the registration and remove false positives. The results are robust over the patient data and in accordance to the clinical g

Isosurfaces as deformable models for magnetic resonance angiography.

Vascular disease produces changes in lumenal shape evident in magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). However, quantification of vascular shape from MRA is problematic due to image artifacts. Prior deformable models for vascular surface reconstruction primarily resolve problems of initialization of the surface mesh. However, initialization can be obtained in a trivial manner for MRA using isosurfaces. We propose a methodology for deforming the isosurface to conform to the boundaries of objects in the image with minimal a priori assumptions of object shape. As in conventional methods, external fo

Modified magnetic resonance image based parcellation method for cerebral cortex using successive fuzzy clustering and boundary detection.

Development of the accurate and reproducible parcellation of the human brain can be used to resolve the complex structure-functional relationships in the brain. We propose a modified parcellation method that provides the reliable and reproducible regions of interest using successive fuzzy c-means (sFCM) and boundary-detection algorithm. This method displays simultaneously both original brain image for identifying the sulcal landmarks and its tissue-classified image for referring to patterns of sulci. The whole cerebral region is extracted by the semiautomated region growing method and then cla

Comparative evaluation of volumetry estimation from plain and contrast enhanced computed tomography liver images.

OBJECTIVES: Surgery planning for liver tumour is carried out using contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) images to determine the optimal resection strategy and to assess the volume of liver and tumour. Current surgery planning tools interpret even the functioning liver cells present within the tumour boundary as tumour. Plain CT images provide inadequate information for treatment planning. This work attempts to address two shortcomings of existing surgery planning tools: (i) to delineate functioning liver cells from the non-functioning tumourous tissues within the tumour boundary and (i

Artificial intelligence as a second reader for pneumothorax detection: redirecting rather than reducing chest CT use.

BACKGROUND: Pneumothorax is a finding that is frequently missed in the emergency department, particularly in cases with subtle radiographic features, and can rapidly progress to tension pneumothorax when overlooked on the initial chest radiograph. Although artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted chest radiograph interpretation has been shown to improve diagnostic accuracy, its effect on the actual decision behaviour of emergency physicians - particularly on chest computed tomography (CT) ordering - remains insufficiently studied. This study evaluated the impact of AI-assisted chest radiograph in

Colon cancer: comprehensive evaluation with 64-section CT colonography using water enema as intraluminal contrast agent-a pictorial review.

Sixty-four-section CT colonography with water enema combines intracolonic neutral contrast agent with high-resolution CT images of the abdomen. Owing to submillimeter isotropic voxels, high-quality reformatted images are obtained. High-resolution images offer added value for the detection and localization of colonic lesions, evaluation of the local extent of the disease, and depiction, if any, of synchronous colorectal lesions and distant metastases. Sixty-four-section CT colonography with water enema has a major role in the evaluation of patients with colon cancer before planning therapy. It

The morphology, immunophenotype and distribution of paracortical dendritic leucocytes in lymph nodes regional to cutaneous melanoma.

Our aim was to identify and delineate alterations in the distribution and immunophenotype of the lymphocytes and paracortical dendritic leucocytes (interdigitating dendritic cells; IDCs) in lymph nodes regional to tumours. Using immunocytochemistry and computer-assisted image analysis we examined 65 lymph nodes excised from 47 patients with malignant melanoma. Twenty-nine patients had American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stage II melanoma (no tumour spread beyond the primary site) and 18 had AJCC stage III disease (metastases in the regional nodes). There were significant differences in t

[Echocardiography in cardiology-Basic tool, current developments and future perspectives].

Despite advances in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), transthoracic echocardiography remains the central imaging method in cardiology and internal medicine. Key advantages are ubiquitous availability, repeatability and the direct linkage between findings and symptoms at the bedside. In daily practice it answers questions relevant to treatment with respect to pump function, pericardial effusion or tamponade, relevant valvular diseases, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), pulmonary hypertension and the hemodynamic profile in shock, sepsis or circu

A morphological indicator for aortic dissection: fitting circle of the thoracic aorta.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to identify a morphological indicator of aortic dissection (AD) based on the geometrical characteristics of the thoracic aorta. METHODS: We evaluated computed tomographic angiograms of 63 samples with AD (22 with type A AD, 41 with type B AD) and 71 healthy samples. Via centerline extraction and spatial transformation, the spatial entanglement of the aorta was minimized, and the expanded 2D aortic morphology was obtained. The 2D morphology of the thoracic aorta was fit to a circle. The applicability of the fitting circle method for identifying aortic dissection was

Data-driven identification of diagnostically useful extrastriatal signal in dopamine transporter SPECT using explainable AI.

This study used explainable artificial intelligence for data-driven identification of extrastriatal brain regions that can contribute to the interpretation of dopamine transporter SPECT with 123I-FP-CIT in parkinsonian syndromes. A total of 1306 123I-FP-CIT-SPECT were included retrospectively. Binary classification as 'reduced' or 'normal' striatal 123I-FP-CIT uptake by an experienced reader served as standard-of-truth. A custom-made 3-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained for classification of the SPECT images with 1006 randomly selected images in three different settings
