Emerging adulthood is a transitional life stage in which parent-child relationships remain meaningful for psychological adjustment and well-being of individuals. The present study examined the associations among cognitive flexibility, assertiveness, and parent-child relationship quality among a sample of Indian emerging adults, as well as the theoretical predictive associations of cognitive flexibility and assertiveness with parent-child relationship quality within a regression framework, drawing on Social Learning Theory. A sample of 376 participants aged 18-29 years completed the Cognitive F

Early behavioral features associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are frequently examined within separate motor, sensory, and social domains rather than as interacting components of a developing neurobiological system. In this article, we present a hypothesis-driven conceptual framework proposing that variation in developmental timing and coordination across neural, motor, and interpersonal systems may contribute to differences in early social developmental trajectories. Drawing on evidence from fetal, infant, and early childhood development, we consider how hemispheric specialization,

BACKGROUND: Expectations have an important impact on emotion-pain interactions. Previous studies have primarily focused on the influence of pain-related expectations on perceived pain intensity. However, expectations regarding negative-valence information more broadly may impact perception beyond pain and be altered when pain becomes chronic. The current study aimed to investigate whether patients with chronic pain exhibit alterations in social-emotional expectations beyond pain perception.
METHODS: Thirty-five adults with chronic pain, recruited at the Pain Unit of Hospital del Mar in Barcel

BACKGROUND: Psychosocial stress has been recognized as a potential risk factor for stroke; however, the strength and consistency of its association with first-ever stroke remain uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to determine the overall association between psychosocial stress and the risk of first stroke in a stroke-free population.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis in accordance with the PRISMA and MOOSE guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Ovid were searched from inception to 1 January 2026 for cohort or case-control studies. Elig

BACKGROUND: The "code of silence" in healthcare refers to reluctance among professionals to report misconduct or unsafe practice. Prior research in the United States identified tensions between personal ethics, professional standards, and organizational pressures in shaping speaking-up behavior. It remains unclear whether these dynamics extend across institutional and cultural contexts.
PURPOSE: This study examines whether patterns of awareness and response to inappropriate practice previously identified in a U.S. sample replicate in Romania, and how institutional context may shape interpreta

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is defined as a multidimensional subjective assessment of one's physical and mental health. Homelessness is associated with numerous stressors that can reduce HRQoL. Social support is defined as the availability of individuals, or resources provided by individuals, to cope with stress. Interpersonal social support may be important in buffering HRQoL from the negative implications of stress. Here, we examine this association in a marginalized group known for high rates of physical and mental health comorbidities: adults experiencing homelessness. Participa

This paper investigates movement synchrony between German-speaking participants in spontaneous verbal interaction. In contrast to previous work where interpersonal synchrony was mostly examined in two-person interactions, we studied both dyads (n = 49) and quartets (n = 25) of participants, yielding new insights into how bodily coordination emerges in multi-party settings. Drawing on Motion Energy Analysis as a widely recognized video-based method for motion capture, we computed synchrony using windowed cross-correlations, finding that movement synchrony was present in both dyadic and quartet

Prosecutor-led diversion programs are a promising alternative to incarceration. This study explores how diversion officials perceive and facilitate successful diversion programming for clients to provide information to the field that may enhance the impact of diversion programming. Eleven diversion officials were recruited via snowball sampling across 10 jurisdictions. We explored their experiences in designing and implementing diversion programs using phenomenological qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews. Diversion officials' experiences had two categories: perception and facilitation

Spinal cord injury (SCI) affects far more than motor and sensory function, disrupting identity, mental health and relationships. Healthcare providers (HPs) delivering rehabilitation face systemic constraints and interpersonal challenges, especially around communication and relational dynamics with individuals with SCI. This qualitative study explored HPs' perspectives on their experiences of working with individuals with SCI. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 HPs (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, general practitioners, nurses, and a physiatrist) working in SCI rehabil

Older women living with HIV are uniquely situated at multiple marginalized intersections because of their gender, age, and HIV status. However, research into how gender-based stigma (GBS) affects HIV prevention and care for older women is sparse. We conducted a scoping review to explore the relationship between GBS and HIV-related psychosocial, behavioral, and well-being outcomes among older women. Our systematic search yielded 25 articles describing 22 unique studies. We identified five main themes highlighting how GBS exists at individual, interpersonal, and societal levels to adversely affe

This report presents the case of a not yet well-researched condition referred to as relationship disappointment stress syndrome (RDSS). This syndrome appears to be linked to cultural norms that romanticize marriage and unresolved post-traumatic sequelae, both of which may contribute to overly optimistic relationship expectations. When these expectations are unmet, individuals may experience the profound effects of disappointment. This case study highlights the experience of three selected patients out of 10 cases who underwent psychotherapy at the Baho Smile Institute in Rwanda. We observed th

In 2022, PDs: Theory, Research, and Treatment published a 10-year retrospective on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5), Section III, Alternative Model for PDs (AMPD; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). The articles of the 10-year retrospective provided evidence in support of the validity, reliability, and clinical utility of the AMPD. Specifically, it provided evidence in support of the unidimensional factor structure of the LPF and the five-dimensional structure of the pathological trait domains. In addition, evidence in support of the constru

Ageism remains a key issue in gerontological literature and has long been recognized as a deeply harmful form of discrimination. Despite advances in ageism scholarship related to education, advocacy, and prevention, there are calls for ongoing intersectional examinations of ageism among minority groups and across older people facing multiple exclusions. In particular, very little ageism research has considered the experiences of age-based discrimination and prejudice among older people experiencing homelessness. We problematize this gap in knowledge and provide recommendations for policy, prac

Substance misuse is a pernicious health concern for many unhoused people. A deep understanding of turning points - what propels someone to take concrete action toward addressing substance misuse - is needed to inform recovery policies and practices. This study sought to identify common elements in turning points among unhoused people vis-à-vis a phenomenological qualitative approach. Twenty people (Mage = 47.47, SD = 9.75; 50% female) who self-identified as being in recovery while unhoused participated in semi-structured interviews in Anchorage, Alaska, a community with high rates of both hous

Individual personality refers to the Ego and the interpersonal sector. The Ego corresponds to consciousness and self-esteem, including the capacities for emotional self-regulation, self-control, self-evaluation, and self-direction in relation to personal goals. When neoplastic and psychiatric diseases coexist, a patient's quality of life is significantly impacted. While there are somatic differences in disease progression, how the illness is perceived and mainly experienced depends on personality traits. In this study, we administered the DECAS Personality Inventory (a Romanian-validated instr

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterised by impairments in emotional regulation, impulse control and interpersonal interaction. Comorbid depression is common. The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) plays a crucial role in the biological substrate of BPD. We investigated the effects of 1 Hz repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting the OFC on depressive symptoms and symptoms of BPD in 15 patients suffering from both conditions to assess feasibility and effectiveness. Target treatment intensity was 120% of resting motor threshold (RMT) and intended duration four weeks.

Severity of personality disorder is an important determinant of future health. However, this key prognostic variable is not captured in routine clinical practice. Using a large clinical data-set, we explored the predictive validity of items from the Health of Nation Outcome Scales (HoNOS) as potential indicators of personality disorder severity. For 6912 patients with a personality disorder diagnosis, we examined associations between HoNOS items relating to core personality disorder symptoms (self-harm, difficulty in interpersonal relationships, performance of occupational and social roles, an…

Personality disorders (PDs) are associated with interpersonal dysfunction, loneliness, and reduced social embeddedness. This study investigates loneliness and social network size in association with self- and clinician-rated personality functioning regarding the DSM-5's Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD). Eighty psychiatric inpatients including participants with and without PDs completed the Semi-structured Interview for Personality Functioning, the Level of Personality Functioning Scale - Brief Form, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, and the Social Network Index. We propose a framework for guiding research on perinatal health in people with intellectual disability (ID). We developed this framework based on the perinatal health framework for people with physical disabilities, American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities conceptual framework of human functioning, disability reproductive justice framework, trauma-informed care, and socio-ecological model. The framework reflects health outcomes of birthing people with ID and their infants that result from interactions of factors across the life course at policy (health, social, and d
