BACKGROUND: Cryptococcus gattii (Cg) has caused increasing infections in the US Pacific Northwest (PNW) since 2004. We describe this outbreak and compare clinical aspects of infection in the United States among patients infected with different Cg genotypes.

This study investigated the microbiological characteristics of 100 clinical isolates of Cryptococcus neoformans species complex, including serotypes, mating types, molecular types, antifungal susceptibility and virulence. PURPOSE: To report an uncommon case of multifocal choroiditis as the result of disseminated Cryptococcus neoformans infection in a patient who is HIV-positive.
DESIGN: Interventional case report.
METHODS: A 27-year-old HIV-positive woman with fever, headache, and vomiting was examined. Lumbar puncture was performed and revealed C neoformans infection. Her condition evolved with sudden bilateral blindness and deafness. Ophthalmologic examination revealed multiple yellowish choroidal lesions in the posterior pole of both eyes.

We examined the mechanisms involved in the development of lung lesions after infection with Cryptococcus neoformans by comparing the histopathological findings and chemokine responses in the lungs of mice infected with C. neoformans and assessed the effect of interleukin (IL) 12 which protects mice from lethal infection.
