The course of depression over 1 week in patients admitted to hospital following an attempted suicide was examined utilizing a clinical interview, the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale, the Levine-Pilowsky Depression (LPD) Questionnaire and the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. On all measures the group had depression of moderate to marked severity at the time of attempted suicide. In males there was a statistically and clinically significant reduction in severity of depression over 1 week. This trend was also observed in the younger patients. There was no significant change in the frequenc

This community-based epidemiological survey is concerned with relationships between social and environmental factors and atypical depression in a Finnish population aged 60 years or over. The occurrence of atypical depression was related to older age, widowed or divorced marital status, having moved during the previous few years, living in a small dwelling near the local population center, having neighbors living in the same building, living alone, being frequently alone, a low number of hobbies and many long-standing or current social stress factors. In addition, the atypical depressive perso

In a community survey of the elderly in Hobart, persons who lived alone were compared to those who lived with others. Those who lived alone were more often widows and had had more education. They had markedly fewer close relationships but as much other social interaction. They reported that their personal networks were as adequate as other elderly persons, yet they experienced much more loneliness. They had no higher a prevalence of depressive disorders or dementia on DSM-III criteria, but they did have a higher frequency of neurotic depression and some depressive symptoms, of which loneliness

The Type A behavior pattern has been identified as an important precursor of coronary atherosclerosis. However, atherosclerosis is a disease process that occurs throughout the arterial system. The present research examined the hypothesis that the Type A pattern may also be related to disease in other arteries such as the carotid arteries. Men (n = 21) and women (n = 23) from 40 to 65 years of age were examined for carotid artery atherosclerosis using doppler ultrasonography. Subjects also completed the Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS) to measure the Type A pattern. The results indicated that the

Serum dopamine-beta-hydroxylase (DBH) levels were assessed in 150 depressed patients of both sexes, with a mean age of 44.0 +/- 12.3 (SD) years. Patients were divided into unipolars (n = 46), bipolars (n = 25), neurotic-reactive (n = 46) and unspecified (n = 38) i.e., those who did not fit into any of the previous categories. According to their status 38 patients were psychotic and 104 clearly nonpsychotic at the time of the DBH assessment. Personality characteristics were assessed for the same patients when they had markedly improved from their depression. In line with previous findings bipol

Of 711 physicians likely to perform artificial insemination by donor surveyed to determine their current practices, 471 responded, of whom 379 reported that they performed this procedure. They accounted for approximately 3576 births by this means in 1977. In addition to treating infertility, 26 per cent of these physicians used the procedure to prevent transmission of a genetic disease, and 10 per cent used if for single women. Donors of semen were primarily from universities, were only superficially screened for genetic diseases, and were then matched phenotypically to the recipient's husband

Expanded carrier screening (ECS) is a genetic screening test carried out by analysing a blood sample. This screen can be used to detect whether the individual unknowingly carries gene variants associated with common genetic conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, that may be passed on to their children. It is typically performed in reproductive medicine for those who are considering having a family either naturally or via fertility treatment. Many donor sperm and egg banks, particularly in the USA and Europe, also perform blanket ECS testing on all their prospective sperm and egg donors. ECS is n

BACKGROUND: The estimated number of people living with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection acquired through sexual transmission was 103,000 in 2018, with an estimated incidence of 8300 new cases per year. Although hepatitis B (HepB) vaccination is recommended by the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices for persons seeking evaluation and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), prevaccination testing is not yet recommended. Screening may link persons with chronic hepatitis B to care and reduce unnecessary vaccination.
METHODS: We used a Markov model to calculate the health

In 1983, Huntington disease (HD) became the first disease to be mapped to a previously unknown location on chromosome 4. This discovery meant that we could now identify whether some individuals at risk for HD would develop HD in the future using a method called linkage testing. Testing was first offered through research protocols designed to assess whether testing could be done safely in this population. Testing guidelines were soon developed by the Huntington's Disease Society of America and the International Huntington Association in collaboration with the World Federation of Neurology. The

Retinoblastoma is a genetic condition initiated by pathogenic variants causing biallelic loss of function of the RB1 gene. Genetic testing is a crucial component in the evaluation, treatment, and surveillance of retinoblastoma patients. A pathogenic germline mutation determines retinoblastoma heritability, a distinction that possesses significant implications for personal prognosis, risk assessments for family members, family planning, and clinical decision making. Any patient with a diagnosis of retinoblastoma with an uncertain RB1 status and first-degree relatives of probands with heritable

As the proportion of persons in the United States older than 65 years increases, the prevalence of dementia will increase as well. Risk factors for dementia include age, family history of dementia, apolipoprotein E4 genotype, cardiovascular comorbidities, chronic anticholinergic use, and lower educational level. Patient history, physical examination, functional assessment, cognitive testing, laboratory studies, and imaging studies are used to assess a patient with suspected dementia. A two-visit approach is time-effective for primary care physicians in a busy outpatient setting. During the fir

A sensitive and accurate tuberculosis (TB) serodiagnostic test would aid in the control of TB, but results of current tests are relatively unreliable for persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). We evaluated a new prototype immunochromatographic strip test and 5 commercially available serodiagnostic TB tests in a prospective study comprised of 465 consecutively enrolled patients with suspected TB from 2 hospitals in Botswana. Consenting adults underwent HIV testing, >/=2 sputum smears and cultures, and mycobacterial blood culture. Patients were defined as having TB on the basi

IgE-mediated type I hypersensitivity is the primary pathogenesis of allergic diseases. Allergen-specific IgE (sIgE) testing is now widely used in clinical practice, and the correct clinical interpretation of test results is a prerequisite for the standardized diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases. In 2022, the expert panel drafted Chinese expert consensus on the clinical interpretation of allergen specific IgE test, establishing interpretation pathways for various clinical scenarios, which significantly improved clinicians' ability to interpret results correctly. In recent years, compon

OBJECTIVE: The longitudinal epidemiological development of the new variant of Chlamydia trachomatis was studied after appropriate testing procedures had been introduced when the strain was detected in 2006.
METHODS: The number of cases of the new variant of C trachomatis was followed from 2007 through 2011 from the laboratory records. Testing for C trachomatis is centralised to one laboratory with around 80-85 000 persons being tested annually in a population of 1.1 million.
RESULTS: During the 5-year period, 410 973 patients were tested of which 25 723 cases were positive. The proportion of

The continuing increase in knowledge about the genetic basis of carcinogenesis has led to diverse efforts to exploit this knowledge clinically, primarily in the form of predictive genetic testing. In conjunction with family history, gene tests are intended to improve individual cancer risk assessment. The objectives of predictive molecular testing are to identify the disease-causing germline mutation in an index person who has already developed the disease and to distinguish asymptomatic mutation carriers from non-mutation carriers within a given cancer-prone family. At present, genetic testin
