The strategic incremental rehearsal intervention is a modified form of incremental rehearsal, known for its effectiveness as a flashcard technique in improving sight word acquisition among children with reading difficulties. Despite its efficacy, evaluations of this procedure with children who are deaf or hard of hearing and who have received special education services remain sparse. This study aimed to assess the impact of incremental rehearsal intervention on the acquisition of nine sight words among second-grade students who are hard of hearing. A single-case experimental design with a mult

Cochlear implants (CIs) are the treatment of choice for hearing rehabilitation in children with congenital or acquired profound hearing loss or deafness in order to ensure appropriate speech development and avoid social deprivation. However, in the case of a radiologically detectable malformation of the inner ear structures and potentially associated hypo- or aplasia of the vestibulocochlear nerve, application of a CI is either not possible, or the functional outcome may be of limited predictability. In addition, the risk of surgical complications is also increased in these patients. Counselin…

Idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a structural heart disease with strong genetic background. The aim of this study was to assess the role of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variations and haplogroups in Indian DCM patients. Whole mtDNA analysis of 221 DCM patients revealed 48 novel, 42 disease-associated and 97 private variations. The frequency of reported variations associated with hearing impairment, DEAF, SNHL and LHON are significantly high in DCM patients than controls. Haplogroups H and HV were over represented in DCM than controls. Functional analysis of two private variations (m.881

Here, a moral case is presented as to why sign languages such as Auslan should be made compulsory in general school curricula. Firstly, there are significant benefits that accrue to individuals from learning sign language. Secondly, sign language education is a matter of justice; the normalisation of sign language education and use would particularly benefit marginalised groups, such as those living with a communication disability. Finally, the integration of sign languages into the curricula would enable the flourishing of Deaf culture and go some way to resolving the tensions that have arise

Labyrinthine meningocele can be classified into translabyrinthine and perilabyrinthine type. We describe a case of rare unruptured translabyrinthine meningocele (TLM). It is rare to encounter an unruptured TLM because it is usually diagnosed after rupture as a labyrinthine fistula, cerebral spinal fluid otorrhea, and subsequent meningitis. We provide for the first time an intraoperative photo and video of a case of an unruptured TLM that developed through an inner ear malformation in a single-side deaf child, which was preoperatively misdiagnosed as congenital cholesteatoma in preoperative tem

The Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness syndrome (KIDS) is an autosomal dominant ectodermal dysplasia characterized by ocular, skin, and ear anomalies, including keratitis, palmoplantar keratoderma, and congenital hearing loss. Most cases are due to mutations in the GJB2 gene encoding connexin 26. The Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a developmental anomaly of the midline of the cerebellum with complete or partial agenesis of the vermis and cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle. The association of KID syndrome with DWM has been reported a few times, but thought to be coincidental. We report 4 …

The incomplete prediction of clinical phenotype from genotype in monogenic disorders assumes other complex mechanisms are responsible. Recent examples derived from well-known human diseases will be discussed in this review in the context of the roles of modifier genes, digenic and triallelic inheritance, and the consequence of imprinting and opposite transcripts in known human genetic disorders. Specifically, this review will focus on cystic fibrosis, Huntington's disease, sensory neural deafness due to Connexin gene mutations, Bardet-Biedl syndrome, and the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome as ther…

The WS4 mouse is an animal model for human Waardenburg syndrome type 4 (WS4), showing pigmentation anomalies, deafness and megacolon, which are caused by defects of neural crest-derived cells. We have previously reported that the gene responsible for the WS4 mouse is an allele of the piebald mutations of the endothelin B receptor gene (Ednrb). In this study, we examined the genomic sequence of the Ednrb gene in WS4 mice and found a 598-bp deletion in the gene. The deleted region contains the entire region of exon 2 and the 5' part of exon 3 and is flanked by inverted repeat sequences which are…

Intratympanic instillation of gentamicin may not exclusively be a treatment for Ménière's disease. We present case reports of successful vertigo control in peripheral vestibular disorders other than Ménère's disease. Cases 1 and 2 illustrate treatment of vertigo attacks caused by vestibular dysfunction in deaf ears. Case 3 illustrates treatment of brief sensations of linear acceleration in a patient who had suffered idiopathic sudden hearing loss a few years earlier. Case 4 illustrates treatment of disabling benign paroxysmal positioning vertigo. Case 5 illustrates treatment of severe and freq

The aim of a functional prosthesis - a hearing aid - is to improve the comprehensibility of speech. The hearing aid is individually adjusted for the patient. Every deaf patient is subjected first to an extensive otolaryngological and audiological examination programme which comprises the recording of the case-history, assessment of the ENT diagnosis, examinations of threshold and suprathreshold sound audiometry, verbal and sentence audiometry in a sound-proof chamber and in space. To set the most important parameters of hearing aids (frequency characteristics, intensification and dynamic range

Two interrelated personal computer (PC) based speech training aids have been developed: one for use in a school or clinic, the Speech Training Station (STS); and the other for the deaf child's home, the Speech Practice Station (SPS). The STS monitors speech production by microphone, electroglottograph, and pneumotachograph. The SPS system uses only the microphone input. Both systems utilize commercially available board-level hardware and a custom analog preprocessor board for the analysis of the acoustic and/or physiologic inputs. The school system has been used by speech therapists for diagno

Intra-operative electrocochleography (ECochG) was used in an attempt to monitor the action potential of the cochlear nerve during acoustic neuroma surgery in 14 patients with useful pre-operative hearing. Five patients had ECochG potentials preserved and yet only three could hear when tested audiometrically later. Of those losing the potentials intra-operatively all were subsequently deaf and the pattern of waveform loss allowed determination of the probable cause of hearing loss. Complete excision of the tumour was achieved in each case regardless of the ultimate effect on the AP as it was no

A one year old child with Kniest's disease was admitted for reconstructive surgery of the bone deficit of a palatine cleft. This syndrome is recognizable at a very early age by the shortness of the limbs or the increase in size of the joints. Clinically it associates mild facial dystrophy and nanism from reduction in height of the trunk and the shortness and deviations of the limbs. Frequently associated are myopia, deafness and a palatine cleft. Radiological signs are reduced height of vertebral bodies, and a not infrequent finding is a cuneiform deformity of the first lumbar vertebrae. Epiph…

Nineteen of 421 white children in Montreal schools for the deaf had preauricular pits. The branchio-oto-renal (BOR syndrome was identified in four of the nine families who agreed to family investigation, including audiograms and intravenous pyelograms (IVPs) and may have been present in several others. The penetrance of this autosomal dominant syndrome appears to be high. It is estimated that severe renal dysplasia occurs in about 6% of heterozygotes. The presence of a preauricular pit at birth suggests that the child has at least one chance in 200 of severe hearing loss, and this warrants a c

Sign language (SL) is an effective mode of communication, which uses visual-physical methods like hand signals, expressions, and body actions to communicate between the difficulty of hearing and the deaf community, produce opinions, and carry significant conversations. SL recognition (SLR), the procedure of automatically identifying and construing gestures of SL, has gotten considerable attention recently owing to its latent link to the lack of communication between the deaf and the hearing world. Hand gesture detection is its domain, in which computer vision (CV) and artificial intelligence (

BACKGROUND: Verbal working memory delays are found in many deaf children with cochlear implants compared with normal-hearing peers, but the factors contributing to these delays are not well understood. This study investigated differences between cochlear implant users and normal-hearing peers in memory scanning speed during a challenging verbal working memory task. To better understand variability in verbal working memory capacity within each sample, associations between memory scanning speed, speech recognition, and language were also investigated.
METHODS: Twenty-five prelingually deaf, ear
