Jones syndrome is a rare dominantly inherited syndrome characterized by gingival fibromatosis and progressive sensorineural hearing loss becoming symptomatic in the second decade of life. Here, we report a father and his two daughters presenting with a typical Jones syndrome (OMIM %135550) phenotype. Exome sequencing identified a repressor element 1-silencing transcription factor (REST, OMIM *600571) (NM_005612.5) c.2670_2673del p.(Glu891Profs*6) heterozygous variant segregating with Jones syndrome in the family. We review the clinical data from all previously published patients with Jones syn

This case report aimed to demonstrate the prosthetic solution of an autism patient with self-injurious behavior using digital dentistry. A 24-year-old male visited our clinic with chief complaints of severe gingival recession associated with self-injurious behavior. Bilateral fixed prosthesis with denture flange were delivered using a digital workflow for the protection of the gingiva. The patient showed healed gingival tissue, behavioral modification, and acceptable oral hygiene during the follow-up period. Also, his caregivers reported no recurrence of the self-injurious behavior. Autism pat

Attached gingiva is desirable for the maintenance of gingival health. Although many methods are used to increase the zone of attached gingiva, the modified apically repositioned flap (MARF) technique has the advantages of simplicity and predictability. The short-term follow-up of the MARF technique demonstrated an increase in keratinized tissue and attached gingiva. This study evaluated long-term results of the MARF technique as used to increase the apicocoronal dimensions of keratinized tissue and attached gingiva in 28 sites (25 patients; average follow-up of 9 years). There was a statistica

BACKGROUND: The treatment of gingival recessions is one of the important branches of periodontics related to esthetics. However, no surgical technique has been reported for the treatment of a particular type of gingival recession called Stillman's cleft.
METHODS: The technique proposed is a laterally moved, coronally advanced flap. After local anesthesia, two parallel incisions, one along the cleft and the second parallel to the first one, have been placed beyond the mucogingival junction, allowing a rotating partial-thickness flap to cover the recession.
RESULTS: The procedure, in this case

Root coverage is achieved by many procedures like free gingival autografts, connective tissue grafts and pedicle grafts. Several studies state that root coverage using connective tissue grafts have high success rates but have disadvantages like creation of second surgical site and post-operative color harmony is less. Although Cohen and Ross reported more than 85% success in covering denuded roots, the degree of success varies among other clinicians. The double papilla pedicle graft has limited usefulness. The double papillae pedicle graft is most appropriate in those cases where esthetics dem

Gingival recession may present problems that include root sensitivity, esthetic concern, and predilection to root caries, cervical abrasion and compromising of a restorative effort. When marginal tissue health cannot be maintained and recession is deep, the need for treatment arises. This literature has documented that recession can be successfully treated by means of a two stage surgical approach, the first stage consisting of creation of attached gingiva by means of free gingival graft, and in the second stage, a lateral sliding flap of grafted tissue to cover the recession. This indirect te

Defects near gingiva--a common pathology of dental hard tissue, which adversely affects the health of marginal periodontium. Subgingival tooth cavity is the retention factor for parodontopatogenic microorganisms. Chronic inflammation in the marginal periodontium in response to microbial invasion may lead to local periodontitis (periodontal pocket/gingival recession). Treatment of defects near gingiva should include the removal of the main etiological factors of disease: supraocclusion, bad habits, normalization of individual oral hygiene. Substitution therapy is the defect filling. The most su

Symptoms of bone pain and skin rashes are not uncommon following a variety of infectious illnesses, but the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. The case of a 9-year-old boy with autism was recently described, who was hospitalized because of pain in the right hip, refusal to walk, fatigue, irritability, skin rash, and subsequent gingival swelling after an unspecified upper respiratory illness. The boy was diagnosed with scurvy. However, the gingival symptoms occurred after treatment with indomethacin, which lowers vitamin C levels; severe bone pain and fatigue are also well-documente

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) accounts for 7% of all smooth tissue sarcomas. The rarity of smooth muscle cells in the oral cavity makes LMS a rare tumor in this localization. We report a case of gingival LMS in a 43-year-old woman. We reviewed 23 cases of LMS or the oral cavity report in the literature since 1980. Age of occurrence varied from 2.5 to 63 years with a predominance in the 20 to 30 years age range. In two-thirds of the cases, the first symptom was the development of a painful mass. In half the mass developed in the maxilla and in one-quarter it occurred in the gingival mucosa alone. In nea

As the United States population ages, people will be taking more medications which may benefit their general health but not necessarily their periodontal health. The effects of medications have been grouped into six categories as follows: behavioral alteration of oral hygiene methods, alteration of plaque composition, effect on gingival tissues, effect on alveolar bone, effect on gingival crevicular fluid, and effect on salivary flow. Although most medications discussed in this paper increase the risk for periodontal disease, a few may actually decrease the risk. These include the effect of Ph

Periodontal diseases are among the most prevalent conditions in adults, and afflict many individuals of all ages. They refer to a cluster of inflammatory conditions of the periodontium, the tissues that surround the teeth. Ultimately, periodontal diseases cause the loss of alveolar bone support and may lead to tooth loss. The clinical presentation of periodontal diseases is primarily independent of the age of a person, and successful diagnosis and treatment can be achieved in both young and old individuals. These diseases primarily include gingivitis, periodontitis and oral vesiculobullous dis…

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the periodontal status of liver transplant candidates (LTCs) with healthy controls.
METHODS: Fifty liver transplant candidates (LTC group) and fifty patients without liver disease (control group) underwent a complete periodontal examination. The groups were matched according to sex, age, and smoking status. A structured questionnaire was applied to record demographic data, systemic health, and information related to liver disease. Full-mouth complete periodontal examination of six sites per tooth was performed: gingival recession (GR), probing depth (PD

Multiple epiphyseal dysplasia with early-onset diabetes mellitus (also known as Wolcott-Rallison syndrome) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that manifests itself in early infancy with symptoms of diabetes mellitus. Short stature and walking difficulties become evident in the 2 nd year of life when the child starts to walk. These skeletal changes are progressive with age. There is usually a short trunk, excessive lordosis, a short and broad chest, and genu valgum. This report presents a case of Wolcott-Rallison syndrome in a 10 year old child.

Peripheral ameloblastoma is an uncommon pathological variant of the more usual intraosseous central ameloblastoma. It most typically presents as a localized soft tissue mass occurring in the tooth-bearing areas of the jaws and is often provisionally diagnosed as an epulis. In this paper, a 43-year-old male presented with a three-year history of a painful, slowly enlarging gingival swelling. There was no evidence of bony involvement on radiographs but it was revealed histologically to be a peripheral ameloblastoma. Treatment was by wide local excision, including a bony margin, and primary closu

BACKGROUND: Information is lacking on the natural history of periodontitis through the third and fourth decades of life.
METHODS: Periodontal examinations were conducted at 26 and 32 years of age in a longstanding prospective study of a birth cohort born in Dunedin, New Zealand, in 1972 and 1973. At each age, gingival recession (GR) and probing depth (PD) were recorded at three sites per tooth using a diagonal half-mouth design (measurements were made in all four quadrants at 32 years of age, but longitudinal comparisons were made using only the half-mouth data).
RESULTS: A total of 882 indi

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the gingiva are uncommon. They can be a diagnostic challenge clinically because of their rarity and tendency to mimic benign lesions. In this report, we present a case of an undifferentiated malignant neoplasm of unknown origin presenting as benign inflammatory gingival lesions and we review the literature on metastases to the gingiva.
METHODS: A 44-year-old female patient was referred by a local periodontist for evaluation of multiple painless gingival lesions that clinically resembled pyogenic granulomas or periodontal abscesses, but with an uncharacteristic multif

A case is reported of an unusual vascular lesion on the gingiva of an 11-year-old boy which clinically and histopathologically did not fit well into any current classification of vascular lesions. The lesion presented as a firm nodular swelling of the buccal and lingual gingiva which had been present for 9 years. The term endovascular papillary haemangioma is suggested. Histopathologically it had features in common with a number of benign vascular lesions, as well as with some more sinister locally-aggressive vascular tumours and angiosarcomas. It is stressed that, although some of these lesio
