Autonomic changes induced by provocative motion in rats bred for high (HAB) and low (LAB) anxiety-related behavior: Paradoxical responses in LAB animals.

In humans, associations between anxiety and nausea (including motion-induced) are reported but the underlying mechanisms are not known. Hypothermia is proposed to be an index of nausea in rats. Utilising hypothermia and heart rate as outcome measures we investigated the response to provocative motion in rats selectively bred for high (HAB) and low (LAB) anxiety-related behaviors and in non-selected (NAB) rats to further elucidate the potential relationship between hypothermia and nausea-like state. Core temperature and electrocardiogram were monitored in each group (n=10 per group) using telem…

Comparison between target margins derived from 4DCT scans and real-time tumor motion tracking: insights from lung tumor patients treated with robotic radiosurgery.

PURPOSE: A unique capability of the CyberKnife system is dynamic target tracking. However, not all patients are eligible for this approach. Rather, their tumors are tracked statically using the vertebral column for alignment. When using static tracking, the internal target volume (ITV) is delineated on the four-dimensional (4D) CT scan and an additional margin is added to account for setup uncertainty [planning target volume (PTV)]. Treatment margins are difficult to estimate due to unpredictable variations in tumor motion and respiratory pattern during the course of treatment. The inability t…

Correlative assessment of tumor microcirculation using contrast-enhanced perfusion MRI and intravoxel incoherent motion diffusion-weighted MRI: is there a link between them?

The purpose of this study was to correlate intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) imaging with classical perfusion-weighted MRI metrics in human gliomas. Parametric images for slow diffusion coefficient (D), fast diffusion coefficient (D*), and fractional perfusion-related volume (f) in patients with high-grade gliomas were generated. Maps of Fp (plasma flow), vp (vascular plasma volume), PS (permeability surface-area product), ve (extravascular, extracellular volume), E (extraction ratio), ke (influx ratio into the interstitium), and tc (vascular transit time) from dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE…

Autonomous motion and temperature-controlled drug delivery of Mg/Pt-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) Janus micromotors driven by simulated body fluid and blood plasma.

In this work, we have demonstrated the autonomous motion of biologically-friendly Mg/Pt-Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) Janus micromotors in simulated body fluids (SBF) or blood plasma without any other additives. The pit corrosion of chloride anions and the buffering effect of SBF or blood plasma in removing the Mg(OH)2 passivation layer play major roles for accelerating Mg-H2O reaction to produce hydrogen propulsion for the micromotors. Furthermore, the Mg/Pt-PNIPAM Janus micromotors can effectively uptake, transport, and temperature-control-release drug molecules by taking advantage of…

Tissue motion annular displacement of the mitral valve using two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography predicts the left ventricular ejection fraction in normal children.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard for determining the left ventricular ejection fraction is cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. Other parameters … two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography. Mitral displacement was determined using the tissue motion annular displacement (TMAD) feature of Philips QLAB version 9. The midpoint displacement of the mitral valve was calculated, and the predicted left ventricular ejection fraction was compared with magnetic resonance imaging-derived and M-mode-derived …

Self-motion perception and vestibulo-ocular reflex during whole body yaw rotation in standing subjects: the role of head position and neck proprioception.

Self-motion perception and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) were studied during whole body yaw rotation in the dark at different static head positions. Rotations consisted of four cycles of symmetric sinusoidal and asymmetric oscillations. Self-motion perception was evaluated by measuring the ability of subjects to manually track a static remembered target. VOR was recorded separately and the slow phase eye position (SPEP) was computed. Three different head static yaw deviations (active and passive) relative to the trunk (0°, 45° to right and 45° to left) were examined. Active head deviations had…

Prediction of cardiac events in patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction with dobutamine cardiovascular magnetic resonance assessment of wall motion score index.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of dobutamine cardiovascular magnetic resonance (DCMR) results for predicting cardiac events in individuals with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether DCMR results identify a poor cardiac prognosis when the resting LVEF is moderately to severely reduced. METHODS: Two hundred consecutive patients ages 30 to 88 (average 64) years with an LVEF <or=55% that were poorly suited for stress echocardiography underwent DCMR in which left ventricular wall motion score index (WMSI), defined as …

Continuous passive motion versus immobilisation in a cast after surgical treatment of idiopathic club foot in infants: a prospective, blinded, randomised, clinical study.

Continuous passive motion has been shown to be effective in the conservative treatment of idiopathic club foot. We wished to determine whether its use after operation could improve the results in resistant club feet which required an extensive soft-tissue release. There were 50 feet in the study. Posteromedial lateral release was performed in 39 feet but two were excluded due to early relapse. The mean age at surgery was eight months (5 to 12). Each foot was assigned a Dimeglio club foot score, which was used as a primary outcome measure, before operation and at 6, 12, 18 and 44 months after. …

Do patients with right ventricular outflow tract ventricular arrhythmias have a normal right ventricular wall motion? A quantitative analysis compared to normal subjects.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Patients with ventricular ectopy from the right ventricular (RV) outflow tract (RVOT) are often referred for RV angiography to exclude disorders such as arrhythmogenic RV cardiomyopathy/dysplasia (ARVC/D). This is usually based on a qualitative assessment of the wall motion. We present a method to quantify the wall motion and to apply this method to compare patients with RVOT ectopy to normal subjects. METHODS: RV angiograms were analyzed from 19 normal subjects and 11 subjects with RVOT ventricular arrhythmias (RVOT arrhythmia subjects) who had no other clinical or other evid…

[Left ventricular systolic wall motion after exercise stress and myocardial perfusion in patients with ischemic heart disease--investigation by ECG gated myocardial tomography].

To investigate regional left ventricular (LV) wall motion (WM) after recovery from myocardial ischemia, we performed ECG-gated myocardial perfusion tomography with 99mTc-MIBI (G-SPECT) in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD). In addition, we compared the left ventricular (LV) systolic function obtained by G-SPECT at rest with that obtained by contrast left ventriculography (LVG). We performed G-SPECT at 30 minutes after exercise stress (Ex-30) and 3 hours after exercise (rest). LVWM and LV ejection fractions (EF) were analyzed by the QGS (quantitative gated SPECT) program. The LV was div…

Studying how different terminal groups change the motion of H2NSO2C6H4CONH(EG)3R when bound to the active site of human carbonic anhydrase II.

Molecular dynamics simulations have been used to explore the motions of series of ligands containing coupled benzenesulfonamide and oligoethylene glycol moieties (H2NSO2C6H4CONH(CH2-CH2OCH2CH2OCH2CH2)R+; R+ = NH3+, NHCOCH2NH3+, NHCOCH(CH2Ph)NH3+) bound at the active site of human carbonic anhydrase II (HCAII; E.C. 4.2.1.1). These complexes have been examined previously by X-ray crystallography; the locations of the terminal groups of these ligands were not defined in the crystal structures. These stimulations, carried out in the presence of water, provide dynamic information about the motion o…

[Long-term recovery of regional wall motion in patients with medically treated anterior myocardial infarction: quantitative assessment of the post-infarction left ventriculograms].

The effect of medical treatment without reperfusion therapy on the long-term recovery of regional wall motion was evaluated retrospectively in 28 patients with transmural acute anterior myocardial infarction who had coronary angiography and left ventriculography at 1-6 months after the onset of the episode and were followed for a mean of 65 months. In all patients, initial coronary angiography revealed significant stenosis in only the left anterior descending artery (LAD). All patients were treated medically without reperfusion therapy (such as thrombolytic therapy, angioplasty, or bypass graf…

Abnormal blood pathways in left ventricular cavity in acute myocardial infarction. Experimental observations with special reference to regional wall motion abnormality and hemostasis.

To elucidate the mechanism of regional hemostasis in the left ventricular (LV) cavity during myocardial infarction, the blood pathway in LV cavity was examined with contrast echocardiography injected from the left atrium before and after coronary ligation in nine canines. Before coronary ligation, contrast echoes spread over LV cavity with one rush. After ligation, smokelike echoes indicating hemostasis were observed at the apical middle of the LV cavity in five dogs with apical akinesis and at the apical area in four dogs with apical dyskinesis. The contrast echoes did not reach the apex with

Short and long term predictive value of admission wall motion score in acute myocardial infarction. A cross sectional echocardiographic study of 345 patients.

A score of left ventricular segmental wall motion was used as a convenient rapid way to assess overall left ventricular function in acute myocardial infarction. Its success in risk stratification at admission was assessed by a blind review of cross sectional echocardiographic tape recordings from multiple acoustic windows. Sixty nine (20%) of the 345 patients died during hospital stay or within a one year follow up. The mean (SD) wall motion score in those who died was significantly higher than in those who survived (16.2 (5.9) vs 5.7 (3.9)). There were no differences between the group that di…

Mitral annulus calcification, systolic anterior motion of the anterior mitral leaflet and outflow obstruction in two patients without hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. An echocardiographic report.

Systolic anterior motion of the anterior mitral leaflet (SAM) and concomitant left ventricular outflow obstruction (LVOFO) are commonly seen in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. However, SAM has also been described together with extensive anteroseptal wall infarction, pericardial exudation and in hypovolemic situations. This report presents two patients examined with M-mode echocardiography which demonstrates that SAM with LVOFO can also occur in association with mitral annulus calcification (MAC). A possible mechanism behind this entity would firstly be the anterior displacement of the mitral ring…

Reversible wall motion abnormalities do not predict long-term mortality if coronary flow reserve is accounted for: A 15-year contrast stress-echo study.

BACKGROUND: Stress echocardiography (SE) is widely used to detect myocardial ischaemia in the scenario of chronic coronary syndromes (CCS). Despite that, the prognostic value of SE has been rarely assessed. We aim to establish whether the presence of reversible wall motion abnormalities (RWMA), remains independently associated with long-term mortality when considering myocardial perfusion (MP) and Doppler coronary flow velocity reserve in the left anterior descending artery (CFVR-LAD). METHOD: 1002 subjects who underwent Dipyridamole contrast SE, for suspected CCS, between 2007 and 2012 at th…
