Genome scan for spelling deficits: effects of verbal IQ on models of transmission and trait gene localization.

Dyslexia is a complex learning disability with evidence for a genetic basis. Strategies that may be useful for dissecting its genetic basis include the study of component phenotypes, which may simplify the underlying genetic complexity, and use of an analytic approach that accounts for the multilocus nature of the trait to guide the investigation and increase power to detect individual loci. Here we present results of a genetic analysis of spelling disability as a component phenotype. Spelling disability is informative in analysis of extended pedigrees because it persists into adulthood. We sh

Effects of multidomain risk accumulation on cognitive, academic, and behavioural outcomes.

This longitudinal study examined the predictive associations between cumulative multidomain risk factors and cognitive (IQ), academic (reading fluency), and social adaptive outcomes at 8 to 9 years among 190 children with or without familial risk for dyslexia. Other risk factors included parental and neurocognitive risks assessed when the children were 1 to 6 years of age. Risks accumulated more among children with familial risk for dyslexia than among children without familial risk. A higher number of risks was associated with poorer performance in all outcome measures as postulated by the cu

Factors associated with academic success at Vienna Medical School: prospective survey.

AIM: To identify factors relating to students' success in the study of medicine at the Medical University of Vienna. In view of Austria's tradition of open access to higher education, which results large number of students, high dropout rate, long duration of studies, factors predicting success could be helpful for student counseling. METHODS: In a prospective study, 674 freshmen (50.8% of students enrolled that year) responded to a questionnaire on their sociodemographic data, family background, performance in school, economic situation, living conditions, social integration and health, lear

Predicting academic and National Board Dental Hygiene Examination performance based on Academic Factors.

PURPOSE: Numerous studies have explored reliable variables that predict student success in dental hygiene programs and on the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE). However, no studies were found using data collected since the NBDHE format changed in 1998 to investigate if traditional predictors hold true. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between pre-admission requirements, basic college science requirements, site of academic preparation, cumulative dental hygiene grade point average (CDHYGPA) and the NBDHE score. METHODS: Data from the academic records

Test anxiety and working memory system.

The purpose was to examine the effect of test anxiety on deficits in the articulatory loop in the working memory system. We used a verbal memory task to occupy the articulatory loop and a spatial memory task to occupy the visuospatial scratch pad. 17 highly test-anxious and 19 low-anxiety subjects performed both tasks under an anxiety-inducing situation during which they were observed by a monitor camera. Percentage of correct responses and reaction times were measured as indices of task performance. Highly anxious subjects reported feeling worry and cognitive self-concern more than the low-an

Spinal lesion level, shunt status, family relationships, and psychosocial adjustment in children and adolescents with spina bifida myelomeningocele.

Investigated whether family functioning and child psychosocial adjustment were associated with spinal lesion level and shunt status in 65 children and adolescents with spina bifida myelomeningocele (age range = 8-16). Mothers of children with higher lesion levels (i.e., thoracic level) reported more attachment to their children, less family conflict, and a greater willingness to grant autonomy to their offspring. Such findings support a "marginality" interpretation of the data, insofar as the least physically impaired children with spina bifida exhibited the greatest family difficulties. Based

The children's behaviour questionnaire for completion by parents and teachers in a Chinese sample.

Children's behaviour questionnaires were completed by parents and teachers for 248 and 266 12-year old children in Beijing, China, respectively. Compared with studies in other countries, the present study showed that (1) mothers rated children as showing higher frequencies of all behavioural items than did teachers; (2) the ratio of antisocial to neurotic behaviour was higher than the other relevant studies; (3) some items showed sex differences, and these were more marked for teachers than mothers; (4) Chinese boys scored lowest on aggression, but high on psychosomatic symptoms; and (5) diffi

Long-term outcome of group B streptococcal meningitis.

Group B Streptococcus is a common cause of neonatal sepsis and meningitis. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the neurologic, psychologic, and academic status of children who had group B streptococcal meningitis and to compare these children with their siblings. Seventy-four children who acquired group B streptococcal meningitis between one day and 6 months of life formed the study population. Survivors were 3 to 18 years old at the time of their follow-up evaluations. Twenty children (27%) died, two were institutionalized, one severely affected child died at age 2 years, 15 were assess

The effects of stimulus complexity and sensory modality on reaction time in normal and retarded readers.

Intra- and crossmodal performance of normal and retarded readers was compared in a reaction-time task. Both reading groups showed slower crossmodal than intramodal shifting. This effect occurred equally for both reading groups. Differences between the two groups occurred, however, when a complex visual stimulus was present. The complex stimulus resulted in the retarded readers showing slower reaction times to other stimuli in that setting. This effect occurred for stimuli both within and across modalities. The results suggested that the demands of stimulus complexity within the visual modality

Editorial perspective: protective factors following cumulative childhood adversity.

Adverse childhood experiences can have a significant impact on adult psychosocial outcomes. However, negative outcomes are not inevitable, and protective factors can interrupt the realisation of negative developmental trajectories and result in positive adaptation in spite of childhood adversity. Interventions that promote social support, encourage education and academic achievement, and address specific personality and dispositional factors are likely to beneficial for those with experience of childhood adversity. Holistic assessment that considers both neurodevelopmental conditions and traum…

Endoscopic view of the vertebra during laser balloon ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Left atrial posterior wall on the vertebra is often difficult to obtain stable tissue contact with ablation-catheter. Laser balloon ablation is effective because the compression from the vertebra can be visualized through endoscopy. ABSTRACT: When performing pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) with radiofrequency, left atrial posterior wall on the vertebra is often difficult to obtain stable tissue contact with ablation-catheter because of the movement of the ablation point. Laser balloon ablation is effective for the achievement of durable PVI in cases with such anatomical c…

Intestinal Failure: A Description of the Problem and Recent Therapeutic Advances.

Pediatric intestinal failure occurs when gut function is insufficient to meet the nutrient and hydration needs of the growing child. The commonest cause is short bowel syndrome with maldigestion and malabsorption following massive bowel loss. The remnant bowel adapts during the process of intestinal rehabilitation. Management promotes the achievement of enteral autonomy while mitigating the risk of comorbid disease. The future of care is likely to see expansion of pharmacologic methods for augmenting bowel adaptation, tissue engineering techniques enabling immune suppression-free autologous bo…

Debate around leadership in the Stanford Prison Experiment: Reply to Zimbardo and Haney (2020) and Chan et al. (2020).

Access to the Stanford University archive has revealed new material that makes it possible to debate the precise nature and causes of events in the Stanford Prison Experiment. What the authors see as important is that these materials show the experimenters engaged in processes of identity leadership, which encouraged guard cruelty by presenting it as necessary for the achievement of noble collective goals. However, the authors encourage students, teachers, and researchers to engage with this new material themselves to explore alternative perspectives on what actually occurred in the study. (Ps…

Functional Mitral Stenosis: Imposture of Primary Cardiac Intimal Sarcoma.

Cardiac intimal sarcomas are extremely rare, remarkably aggressive and least reported type of primary malignant tumors of the heart. Cardiac intimal sarcomas are encountered more commonly in the large arterial blood vessels including pulmonary artery and aorta, and are extremely rare in the heart. The mainstay of treatment is achievement of tumor-free margins with surgical resection, which is associated with improved survival. Here, we report a 66-year-old female with primary cardiac intimal sarcoma presented with functional mitral stenosis and heart failure. This case report emphasizes common…

Disease-Specific Outcomes of Botulinum Toxin Injections for Neurogenic Detrusor Overactivity.

Intradetrusor injection of botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) is an effective option for managing patients with neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO) who do not respond to or tolerate oral pharmacologic agents. There is level I evidence that intradetrusor injection of onabotulinumtoxinA for refractory NDO in patients with multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury is associated with a significantly greater achievement of goals and improved performance in urodynamic studies than placebo. Pilot studies or small case series support BTX-A for NDO in patients with Parkinson's disease and cerebrovascular acc…
