Vascular hamartomas are non-neoplastic developmental anomalies of vessels. Cases of cerebral vascular hamartomas have been previously reported in dogs and cats. A 4-week-old Freiberger foal had shown persistent problems with breathing and swallowing since birth, and bilateral laryngeal paralysis was diagnosed. The foal subsequently developed left sided facial nerve paralysis and a secondary corneal ulcer in the left eye. Necropsy revealed a pinkish mass in the obex region of the brain. The mass was further investigated by histology and immunohistochemistry. Histologically, the mass consisted o

Atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumour (ATRT) is a rare and highly aggressive malignant neoplasm of the central nervous system (CNS), which occurs predominantly in children less than 2 years of age. There are less than 50 cases described in adult. We report a case of primary spinal ATRT in a 65-year-old male who presented to us with cauda equina syndrome. To the best of our knowledge, our patient is the (1) second oldest patient to be diagnosed with ATRT and only the third case of adult spinal ATRT report in the literature; (2) first reported case of CNS ATRT occurring in a patient with non-rhabdoi

Malignant Infantile Osteopetrosis (MIOP) is a rare genetic disorder due to osteoclast abnormal activity. We report a thirteen month-old male patient, diagnosed as MIOP while investigating the cause of hepatosplenomegaly associated with hydrocephalus. His medical history revealed non consanguineous parents and one brother's death at the same age of unknown etiology (similar symptoms). Systemic examination showed hepatosplenomegaly, growth failure, developmental milestones delay, and rickets features. Ophthalmic exam yielded bilateral optic atrophy. Skeleton radiographs detected generalized dens

This case study describes an instance of death in an early term female newborn with congenital apnea in the clinical setting of multiple congenital anomalies (retrognathia, posteriorly rotated ears, camptodactyly, and arthrogryposis) and prenatal history of polyhydramnios. Postmortem neuropathologic findings were significant for tegmental necrosis in the caudal pons and medulla characterized by a coalescence of microcalcifications accompanied by neuronal loss, axonal spheroids, gliosis, and a concomitant hypoplasia of the inferior olives. This report raises awareness of the rare lethal entity

An 81-year-old man presented with chief complaints of abdominal pain and vomiting. Intestinal obstruction was found at the time of admission to a local hospital in October 2011. Conservative treatment provided symptomatic relief; however, he was readmitted with similar symptoms in December 2011. Small-intestinal wall thickening was detected by abdominal and pelvic computed tomography, and he was referred to our hospital. Small-bowel endoscopy revealed an elevated subcircumferential tumor in the jejunum. Biopsy revealed well to moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma diagnosed as jejunal cance

Case of 59-year-old male with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and a number of comorbidities, who has developed meningoencephalitis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans var. grubii with polyarteritis nodosa diagnosed during hospitalization, was presented. Before evidence of meningoencephalitis, the patient was being treated with ketoconazole and low doses of fluconazole (200 mg/day) for alleged candidiasis. The dosage was increased (800 mg/day) following laboratory diagnosis of C. neoformans based on positive latex agglutination test and biochemical identification of encapsulated yeast isola

Haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rapidly fatal disease caused by dysregulated histiocytes leading to an excessive inflammatory reaction. While genetic forms of HLH exist, the most common form is acquired, frequently associated with infection. Here we report the first case of HLH associated with a coccidiomycosis infection. This patient is a 13-year-old previously healthy boy who presented with a flu-like illness, which rapidly progressed to refractory shock, severe ARDS, multiorgan failure and death despite maximal medical therapy, including broad-spectrum antibiotics to treat we

Isolated involvement of the ventricle by tuberculosis is extremely rare and only nine cases have been reported till now. We report a 13-year-old immuno-competent boy who presented with features of raised intracranial pressure with altered sensorium. Computed Tomography showed a ring enhancing intraventricular lesion with obstructive hydrocephalus. Gross total resection of the lesion was achieved and diagnosis was confirmed histologically. The patient had medical complications in the postoperative period and succumbs five days after the surgery. This report presents the unusual location of a co

Retrorectal or presacral tumors are very rare. We report a unique case of a retrorectal tumor with neuroendocrine differentiation, consisting of high- and low-grade components. A 53-year-old woman treated for a perianal abscess at another clinic was referred to our hospital for continued anal pain. Digital rectal examination identified a soft tumor with a smooth surface in the lower rectum. Pelvic computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging detected a large cystic tumor measuring 8 cm in diameter in the retrorectal space of the pelvis. The border between the tumor and rectal wall, levat

We report a case of a 72-year-old woman with breast cancer who developed significant stenosis due to gastric cardia metastasis. The patient had undergone radical mastectomy for breast cancer when she was 53 years old and had developed postoperative recurrent diseases in the sternum and lung when she was 62 years old. Nineteen years after mastectomy, computed tomography (CT) scans showed gastric cardia metastasis. As symptoms of cardiac stenosis gradually developed, we performed proximal gastrectomy. The specimen was histologically diagnosed as estrogen receptor( ER)-positive scirrhous carcinom

Invasive Trichosporon infection is a rare, life-threatening infection in immunocompromised patients. It has been reported as an emerging opportunistic infection in those with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Only 12 cases of invasive trichosporonosis in patients with HIV have been documented, none in Southeast Asia. We report a case of fatal, disseminated trichosporonosis in a Filipino AIDS patient with severe cutaneous and pulmonary involvement. Invasive trichosporonosis should be considered in HIV-positive patients with disseminated fungal infection since this may be refractory to

Limbic encephalitis is a syndrome characterised by irritability, depression, sleeping disturbance, convulsion, hallucination and short-period memory loss that is commonly associated with a malignancy even if there is no evidence of it by the time of presentation. Most reported cases of limbic encephalitis as a paraneoplastic syndrome are associated with small-cell lung cancer and lymphoma. This article is a case report of a patient with limbic encephalitis associated with an oesophageal adenocarcinoma. The patient is a middle-aged man who presented apathy and unstable mood. After months, devel

In this study, we report a 15-year-old female with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis, who admitted with acute respiratory failure and generalized edema. Abdominal tomography detected thrombi in the right renal vein, in the hepatic segment of the inferior vena cava and in iliac veins. Levels of proteins C and S, antinuclear antigen, anti-dsDNA, C3, and C4 were in normal limits. The thrombi persisted despite treatment with nadroparin, heparin with fresh frozen plasma and warfarin. Due to heparin resistance, antithrombin III levels were measured and were found abnormally low. The fi
