Medications used in dementia: their management and the role of the community nurse.

Dementia care embraces biological, psychological, spiritual and social components, commonly referred to as a biopsychosocial model. From a biological standpoint, dementia is caused by different diseases, each resulting in damage to nerve cells and transmitter pathways. Most people with dementia reside in a community setting, such as care homes or in their own homes, whether living alone or with family carers and supporters. This article considers the place of medications of the biopsychosocial model and discusses common medications used for: (i) for cognitive symptoms; (ii) non-cognitive sympt

[Narcissism-Normal, pathological, grandiose, vulnerable?].

Personality psychology subdivides the narcissism of healthy persons into the grandiose and the vulnerable types (2 factor model), which can be further described in a more differentiated way with the three personality factors extroversion, intolerance/antagonism and neuroticism (3 factor model). The grandiose and the vulnerable types of narcissism can also be found in narcissistically disturbed patients. The narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), which in DSM‑5 is exclusively characterized by the grandiose features also shows vulnerable features; however, these are hidden behind the grandiose

The executive disruption model of tinnitus distress: Model validation in two independent datasets using factor score regression.

This study presents the executive disruption model (EDM) of tinnitus distress and subsequently validates it statistically using two independent datasets (the Construction Dataset: n = 96 and the Validation Dataset: n = 200). The conceptual EDM was first operationalised as a structural causal model (construction phase). Then multiple regression was used to examine the effect of executive functioning on tinnitus-related distress (validation phase), adjusting for the additional contributions of hearing threshold and psychological distress. For both datasets, executive functioning negatively predi

Behaviour, Belief and Impairment (BBI): a diagnostic procedure for eating disorders in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are becoming increasingly prevalent, especially among adolescents. Recognition and assessment of their clinical presentation can be challenging for clinicians in primary care settings, where consultation time is short and experience with eating disorders is limited. The early detection and appropriate referral of adolescents with eating disorders are essential for timely management. AIM: This article reviews eating disorders and the need for a simple, time-efficient assessment which could be used in primary care settings. OUTCOME: The authors propose a unique mod

Effects of Intradermal Radiofrequency Treatment and Intense Pulsed Light Therapy in an Acne-induced Rabbit Ear Model.

Acne vulgaris is a common condition that can have psychologically deleterious effects. Since current treatments carry the risks of antibiotic resistance or teratogenicity, novel treatment modalities are under investigation. Our study investigated the efficacy of intradermal radiofrequency treatment (RF) and intense pulsed light (IPL) in the treatment of acne vulgaris in a rabbit ear model. We evaluated the effectiveness of IPL, RF, and a combination treatment on cultured Cuticobacterium acnes strains in an induced rabbit ear model, according to clinical outcomes as well as histological and imm

Risk of bias in randomized controlled trials of psychological treatments for bulimia nervosa and binge eating.

PURPOSE: In the context of Cochrane systematic reviews/meta-analyses of randomized clinical trials, risk of bias (RoB) is assessed using categorical indicators (low, unclear, or high RoB). This study sought to evaluate the indicators of the Cochrane RoB tool available for construct validity as applied to randomized clinical trials of psychological treatments for bulimia nervosa and binge eating. METHODS: Bayesian confirmatory factor analysis was used to test the construct validity of the measurement model underlying the set of five categorical items, and the reliability of these indicators to

Treatment models.

Antipsychotic drugs are used in a range of schizophrenic patients from the acutely disturbed to the chronically inert. Acute psychotic breakdowns usually involve secondary phenomena such as anxiety, depression and hostility superimposed on a worsening of the psychotic illness: a threshold of arousal is exceeded. This sets up a vicious circle which requires a major therapeutic effort to interrupt. Unfortunately, patients still relapse despite apparently adequate medication, suggesting only partial protection. Relapse is influenced by drug-related factors such as compliance and substance abuse,

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction and facial pain in children: an approach to diagnosis and treatment.

A model for the diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and facial pain in children is presented. Emphasis is placed on systematic assessment of physical, psychologic, and behavioral factors when conservative medical therapy is inadequate for symptom relief. The model represents a multidisciplinary approach to patient care which is described through case presentations. The results of research on the incidence of primary psychopathology in 53 children and 322 adults evaluated during a 3-year period for temporomandibular joint dysfunction and facial pain are also presented

Multichannel convolutional transformer for detecting mental disorders using electroancephalogrpahy records.

Mental disorders represent a critical global health challenge that affects millions around the world and significantly disrupts daily life. Early and accurate detection is paramount for timely intervention, which can lead to improved treatment outcomes. Electroencephalography (EEG) provides the non-invasive means for observing brain activity, making it a useful tool for detecting potential mental disorders. Recently, deep learning techniques have gained prominence for their ability to analyze complex datasets, such as electroencephalography recordings. In this study, we introduce a novel deep-

Effects of education based on the health belief model on screening behavior in high risk women for breast cancer, Tehran, Iran.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in women. Early diagnosis allows efficient treatment and increases survival, but the efficacy of breast self examination (BSE) is not sufficiently well established. The American Cancer Society aims to give women the opportunity to recognize the utility, limitations and adverse effects of breast cancer screening through education models based on psychological theories. With the Health Belief Model, people's health perceptions and attitudes influence their practices, for example with screening. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this randomized con

Treatment as usual psychological therapy for complex post-traumatic stress disorder in National Health Services in Scotland.

OBJECTIVES: With Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) as a new diagnostic category, there is a diversity of interventions and influences on clinical practice, it is prudent that we gather information about current 'treatment as usual'. This study aims to address this need by describing the current clinical landscape of CPTSD treatments offered in NHS services in Scotland. METHODS: An online survey was distributed via heads of service managers to clinicians working with adults. The survey posed questions about psychological therapy models, professional experience and, for the clinici

Social-behavioral and psychological resource advantage and favorable cognitive-domain transitions among older Chinese adults: a longitudinal CHARLS study.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined whether social-behavioral and psychological resource advantage, including lower depressive symptom burden, was associated with favorable observed cognitive-domain transitions among older Chinese adults. METHOD: Using five waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2020, we constructed four cognitive-domain states and adjacent-wave person-period intervals. The Social-Behavioral Resource Advantage Score-5 (SBRAS-5) was treated as an a priori formative resource-breadth count combining non-low educational attainment, non-agricultural h

Current therapeutic strategies and available research models for investigating hypertrophic scars.

Abnormal scarring, such as hypertrophic and keloid scars, are a result of pathological skin wound healing, and can reduce quality of life through psychological factors, persistent pain, and reduced mobility. Under physiological conditions, wounds proceed sequentially through the hemostatic, inflammatory, proliferative, and remodeling phases of healing. However, dysregulated wound healing can overstimulate fibrotic activity, resulting in the development of hypertrophic or keloid scars. These scars present a significant clinical challenge, as hypertrophic scars develop in more than 70% of burn s

Socioeconomic determinants of protective behaviors and contact patterns in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era: A cross-sectional study in Italy.

Socioeconomic inequalities significantly influence infectious disease outcomes, as seen with COVID-19, but the pathways through which socioeconomic conditions affect transmission dynamics remain unclear. To address this, we conducted a survey representative of the Italian population, stratified by age, gender, geographical area, city size, employment status, and education level. The survey's final aim was to estimate differences in contact and protective behaviors across various population strata, both of which are crucial for understanding transmission dynamics. Our initial insights based on

Patterns of co-occurring health risk behaviors and their associations with suicidality among U.S. adolescents: A latent class and decision tree analysis of YRBSS data (2011-2023).

BACKGROUND: Suicide rates among U.S. adolescents have risen in parallel with widespread engagement in co-occurring health risk behaviors (HRBs). Identifying co-occurrence patterns that predict suicidality may improve screening and intervention strategies. METHODS: Using Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System data (2011-2023; N = 53,350), latent class analysis (LCA) was used to classify adolescents based on six HRBs. Multivariable logistic regression examined associations with suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts. Classification and regression tree (CART) models explored interactions amo
