The role of the transdiagnostic sleep and circadian intervention in adolescent bedtime and sleep quality: a pilot study.

PURPOSE: Circadian misalignment is prevalent among adolescents and contributes to sleep deficiency and mental health struggles. There is a need for interventions targeting sleep and circadian difficulties in adolescents. This pilot study examined the effectiveness of a Transdiagnostic Intervention for Sleep and Circadian Dysfunction (TSC) in a community-based adolescent sample with circadian misalignment. We hypothesized that TSC would improve sleep timing and duration, lessen circadian misalignment, improve subjective sleep quality, shorten sleep onset latency, and improve mental health outco

Middle meningeal artery infusion for headaches after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: a pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Headache is a common and disabling symptom after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), often requiring high-dose opioids. Meningeal inflammation and dural nociceptor activation may contribute. The middle meningeal artery (MMA), which supplies the dura, offers a route for targeted therapy. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether dural infusion of lidocaine±dexamethasone during aneurysm embolization reduces pain and opioid use. METHODS: Between February and June 2025, nine patients with aSAH (Hunt and Hess grade 1-2 with Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score ≥7 were prospectively assigned

Persistent low PHB accumulation during pilot-scale gas fermentation in Cupriavidus necator.

Climate change and food security are tightly linked global challenges. Gas fermentation offers a sustainable route to convert CO₂ into microbial single-cell protein (SCP), with hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria (HOB) emerging as efficient biomass producers via the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle. While SCP can replace protein-rich feed components, intracellular polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) accumulation redirects carbon and reducing power away from biomass and protein synthesis, reducing process efficiency. With this aim, a low amount of PHB is needed to focus on protein production rather than PHB accumulat

The Use of Prophylactic Insulin in Surgical Patients Without Diabetes: A Pilot Randomized, Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Determine the feasibility and proof-of-concept of using prophylactic insulin [glucose-insulin-potassium (GIK)] to improve outcomes in nondiabetic (NoDM) surgical patients. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Perioperative hyperglycemia increases the risk of morbidity/mortality, and insulin is used to treat it. Prevention of hyperglycemia with prophylactic insulin may be better than using treatment insulin alone, but feasibility issues need to be addressed before developing a full-scale randomized controlled trial (RCT). METHODS: A pilot RCT of GIK versus placebo among nondiabetic undergoing

Determining the effects of SGLT2 inhibitor on breast cancer cell migration and clonogenicity - a pilot study.

Breast cancer remains one of the most diagnosed and lethal cancers, with increased incidence in developing countries. Empagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, is an effective and well-tolerated antidiabetic drug for managing and treating type 2 diabetes mellitus. Moreover, it can reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular causes and hospitalizations for heart failure. Recent data indicate that empagliflozin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects mediated by modulating various signaling pathways. Molecular and cellular analysis revealed that SGLT2 is expressed

Respiratory-Swallow Training and Variable Practice in Parkinson's Disease: A Clinical Trial Pilot Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia in people with Parkinson's disease (PwPD) is closely linked to impairments in respiratory-swallow coordination. Respiratory-swallow training (RST) is a promising, mechanism-based intervention for dysphagia, but, to date, only a single-subject study has examined RST in PwPD. As an early-stage next step in refining RST for PwPD, this clinical trial pilot study aimed to: (1) explore the preliminary associations between exhale-swallow-exhale (EX-EX) RST and swallowing safety, swallowing efficiency, and respiratory phase patterning; and (2) explore differences in practice st
