Evaluating the Chorioretinal Microcirculation in Preeclampsia with OCT-Angiography: A Narrative Literature Review.

Background/Objectives: The retinal microvasculature may reflect systemic vascular health and can be non-invasively imaged using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Investigation of the capillary plexuses in the macula and the peripapillary area could potentially provide insights into the pathophysiology of ocular manifestations in preeclampsia. We aimed to review the literature on OCTA metrics in preeclampsia to evaluate its use in this condition. Methods: A literature search was performed using the PubMed database, and studies published up to December 2024 were included. Results:

Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Detecting Subclinical Changes in Glaucoma Suspects: A Scoping Review.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) offers a promising approach for detecting subclinical microvascular changes in glaucoma suspects before structural or functional damage becomes apparent. This scoping review synthesizes evidence from 11 studies (2014-2025) to evaluate OCTA's effectiveness in identifying early glaucomatous alterations. Findings consistently demonstrate reduced vessel density (VD) in glaucoma suspects compared to healthy controls, with whole-image VD averaging 51.3% versus 55.5% (P<0.001), respectively. OCTA-derived parameters, particularly peripapillary and macula

Successful treatments of idiopathic retinal vasculitis, aneurysms, and neuroretinitis (IRVAN) syndrome-related macular edema and exudation by intravitreal aflibercept injection in a senile patient: A case report.

RATIONALE: The prevalence of idiopathic retinitis, vasculitis, aneurysms, and neuroretinitis (IRVAN) syndrome is <1/1,000,000, and it tends to occur in young women. Panretinal photocoagulation, focal laser photocoagulation, peripheral cryopexy, vitrectomy, and corticosteroid therapy are the traditional treatments. We reported a case of a senile patient with IRVAN syndrome who presented with severe exudation in both eyes and macular edema in the left eye, successfully treated by serial intravitreal aflibercept injections. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 77-year-old Taiwanese woman complained of progressiv

VEGF-R2/CAV-1 Interaction Induced by Resveratrol/Eicosapentaenoic Acid/Docosahexaenoic Acid-Enriched Formulation through Functional Detergent-Resistant Membranes Is Associated with Decreased VEGF-A Release in ARPE-19 Cells.

SCOPE: Omega-3 fatty acids (O3FAs) and resveratrol (RSV) are known to be beneficial for certain eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Neovascular AMD is characterized by abnormal blood vessel formation due to the excessive synthesis of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) by retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells. The study investigates whether a formulation based on eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and RSV is capable of counteracting VEGF-A secretion, and elucidates the molecular mechanism. METHODS AND RESULTS: The study finds, using ELISA

Inherited C-terminal TREX1 variants disrupt homology-directed repair to cause senescence and DNA damage phenotypes in Drosophila, mice, and humans.

Age-related microangiopathy, also known as small vessel disease (SVD), causes damage to the brain, retina, liver, and kidney. Based on the DNA damage theory of aging, we reasoned that genomic instability may underlie an SVD caused by dominant C-terminal variants in TREX1, the most abundant 3'-5' DNA exonuclease in mammals. C-terminal TREX1 variants cause an adult-onset SVD known as retinal vasculopathy with cerebral leukoencephalopathy (RVCL or RVCL-S). In RVCL, an aberrant, C-terminally truncated TREX1 mislocalizes to the nucleus due to deletion of its ER-anchoring domain. Since RVCL patholog

Atypical Presentation of Foster Kennedy Syndrome due to Neurocysticercosis: A Rare Case Report.

This case highlights the atypical presentation of Foster-Kennedy syndrome (FKS) associated with Neurocysticercosis (NCC), a prevalent cause of space-occupying lesions in areas endemic to the parasite. We report a newly diagnosed case of NCC in a 13-year-old boy who presented with a one-day history of abnormal movements of the left side of the body and no ocular complaints. Fundus examination of the patient revealed temporal disc pallor and a cup disc ratio (CDR) of 0.6 in the right eye suggesting unilateral optic disc atrophy and a hyperaemic disc with CDR 0.3 and blood vessel tortuosity in th

Short-term effects of occlusion therapy and optical correction on microvasculature in monocular amblyopia: a retrospective case-control study.

This retrospective longitudinal case-control study investigated the short-term effects of patch occlusion treatment compared with optical correction on the microvasculature in monocular amblyopia. We included patients with monocular amblyopia treated for 2-12 months; they were classified into two groups according to the treatment regimen: patch occlusion or optical correction. Children aged < 12 years who presented to our clinic for examination without amblyopia diagnosis were enrolled as the control group. Changes in retinal and choroid microvasculature according to treatment were examined, a

CTNND1 variants cause familial exudative vitreoretinopathy through the Wnt/cadherin axis.

Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a hereditary disorder that can cause vision loss. CTNND1 encodes a cellular adhesion protein p120-catenin (p120), which is essential for vascularization with unclear function in postnatal physiological angiogenesis. Here, we applied whole-exome sequencing to 140 probands of FEVR families and identified 3 candidate variants in the human CTNND1 gene. We performed inducible deletion of Ctnnd1 in the postnatal mouse endothelial cells (ECs) and observed typical phenotypes of FEVR with reactive gliosis. Using unbiased proteomics analysis combined with e

Exome sequencing revealed Notch ligand JAG1 as a novel candidate gene for familial exudative vitreoretinopathy.

PURPOSE: Familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR) is a blindness-causing retinal vascular disease characterized by incomplete vascularization of the peripheral retina and by the absence or abnormality of the second/tertiary capillary layers in the deep retina. Variants in known FEVR disease genes can only explain about 50% of FEVR-affected cases. We aim to identify additional disease genes in patients with FEVR. METHODS: We applied exome sequencing analysis in a cohort of 49 FEVR families without pathogenic variants in known FEVR genes. Functions of the affected proteins were evaluated by

The potent small molecule integrin antagonist THR-687 is a promising next-generation therapy for retinal vascular disorders.

Integrins are associated with various eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR) and wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and implicated in main pathologic disease hallmarks like neovascularization, inflammation, fibrosis and vascular leakage. Targeting integrins has the potential to attenuate these vision-threatening processes, independent of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) responsiveness. The current investigation characterized THR-687 as a novel pan RGD (arginylglycylaspartic acid) integrin receptor antagonist able to compete for binding with the natural ligand with

Coronary slow flow accompanying exertional blurred vision and effects of corticosteroids.

Background Various pathophysiological mechanisms such as microvascular and endothelial dysfunction, small vessel disease, diffuse atherosclerosis, and inflammation have been held responsible in the etiology of coronary slow flow. It is also thought to be a reflection of a systemic slow-flow phenomenon in the coronary arterial tree. Case Report A 44-year-old man presented with chest pain causing fatigue, together with blurred vision for the last 2 years, which disappeared after resting. He had used corticosteroid therapy for facial paralysis 1 month ago. Coronary slow flow was detected in all 3

[Glaucoma model for stem cell transplantation research in New Zealand white rabbits].

Glaucoma is a typical irreversible blind neurodegenerative disease for which there is no effective treatment for halting visual deterioration. The recent development of neural stem cells studies sheds light on a potential resolution for this disease. As a result, an appropriate glaucoma modeling method for stem cell transplantation study is needed. In the present study, Dexamethasone was injected unilaterally into the conjunctiva of New Zealand rabbit at the dose of 2.5 mg (5 mg/mL), three times a week. After eight weeks, the eye ground photography showed that the optic nerve head of the treat
