Percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) is a minimally invasive procedure widely used for the treatment of pain due to vertebral fractures of different origins-osteoporotic, traumatic, or neoplastic. PVP is minimally invasive, but the complications are not rare; however, they are in most cases not significant clinically. The most frequent is cement leakage, which can occur onto veins, paravertebral soft tissue, into the intervertebral disk, or to the spinal canal, affecting foraminal area or epidural space. We analyzed results of treatment and complications of vertebroplasty performed with the use o

INTRODUCTION: Despite many papers and instructional course lectures, therapeutic guidelines are not clearly defined about treatment of femoral neck fractures. The aim of this multicentric French symposium was to prospectively study the results of current therapeutic options in order to propose scientifically proven options.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three prospective studies were carried out in order to answer to these questions: (1) is it possible with anatomical reduction and stable fixation to lower the non union and osteonecrosis rate? (2) is functional treatment of Garden 1 fractures success

Aseptic loosening is the most common cause for revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). Due to poor long-term results with cemented acetabular components, cementless implants that rely on biologic fixation became popular in the United States for both primary and revision procedures in the early 1980s. Cementless acetabular components used in THA have been reported to have superior radiographic performance compared with cemented fixation, although the optimal method of acetabular fixation remains controversial. Cementless acetabular components require initial implant stability to allow for bone i

PURPOSE: To retrospectively review the causative organisms isolated from infected hip and knee replacements requiring revision.
METHODS: We reviewed a consecutive series of 36 patients who underwent revision hip or knee arthroplasties due to bacterial infection at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Hong Kong between 1995 and 2003. The male to female ratio was 1:2, and the mean age of patients was 70 years (range, 54-82 years). The mean duration of follow-up was 3.8 years (range, 1.1-8.3 years). No patient was lost to follow-up. All 14 revision knee patients had previously undergone c

BACKGROUND: Most hip fractures are treated surgically, with use of either internal fixation or prosthetic replacement of the femoral head. The presence of these implants increases the risk of a later femoral fracture in susceptible osteoporotic patients. The purpose of this study was to analyze the incidence of and risk factors for implant-related fractures of the femur after previous hip fracture surgery.
METHODS: Over a ten-year period from January 1988 to December 1997, 6230 patients (median age, eighty-two years; male:female ratio, 1247:4983) who sustained a total of 6696 hip fractures we

Revision total hip replacement has traditionally required a trochanteric osteotomy for successful cement removal and component reinsertion. In this study the authors have concluded that in most instances the revision total hip replacement procedure can be successfully performed without trochanteric osteotomy. The advantages are underscored by the high percentage of trochanteric complications with trochanteric osteotomy for revision total hip replacement and the ease of rehabilitation without trochanteric osteotomy. Also, improved functional results without trochanteric osteotomy were noted. Th

The author analysed the radiological results of eighty-three total hip replacements in the patients with severely defective acetabulum secondary to congenital hip dysplasias or failed total hip replacements, after an average follow-up period of three years, paying particular attention to socket loosening. The patients with congenital hip dysplasias were divided into the following four groups: Group 1: The sockets were placed above the level of true acetabulum. Group 2: The sockets were placed in the true acetabulum with the cement used as a filler superolaterally. Group 3: The sockets were pla

We present the case of an elderly man who was admitted to hospital following a road traffic accident for fracture fixation of the right tibia. He presented with the comorbid conditions of type 2 diabetes mellitus, systemic hypertension, bronchial asthma, organic brain disorder and probable coronary artery disease. He was administered general anaesthesia for the operation. Intraoperatively, a total of 6 periods of severe bradycardia/asystole were noticed, lasting from 2 s to 6 s, which resolved spontaneously. This correlated with the timing of intramedullary reaming and returned to sinus rhythm

Tuberculous osteomyelitis is an uncommon form of musculoskeletal tuberculosis and most frequently involves long bones such as the femur and tibia. We report the case of a 53-year-old woman presenting with a one-year history of progressive pain and swelling of the left knee. Imaging revealed a well-defined lytic cavitary lesion in the metaphyseal-epiphyseal region of the proximal tibia with cortical breach, intra-articular extension, and direct communication with a pre-tibial soft-tissue abscess. Surgical management included debridement and curettage of the intramedullary cavity, drainage of th

Limb reconstruction has emerged as a unique and increasingly important discipline in modern medicine. Limb reconstruction refers to the systematic restoration of complex pathological conditions resulting from various injuries or diseases-such as tissue defects, infections, and deformities-using a combination of surgical and non-surgical approaches. Its technical framework is primarily based on microsurgery, the Ilizarov technique, cement-induced membrane technique (Masquelet technique), engineered tissue regeneration, soft tissue balancing and dynamic reconstruction, and modern prosthetics, su

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) remains a challenging complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA), commonly managed through a two-stage revision which can lead to significant morbidity. In this article, we present a rare case of Salmonella enteritidis PJI, initially presenting as prosthetic hip dislocation. Preoperative hip aspiration utilizing blood culture bottles enabled early identification of the organism and guided targeted antimicrobial therapy. The patient underwent revision THA using a well-fixed custom-made articulating spacer (CUMARS) construct, with targeted antibiotic

The most frequent reasons why people lose their teeth are trauma, dental caries, developmental defects, and genetic abnormalities. Dental implants have become a popular alternative to traditional dentures and bridges due to their ability to restore function through osseointegration. This case report presents a 35-year-old male with a two-year history of a missing lower right molar due to caries. With no systemic health issues or harmful habits, the patient underwent dental implant placement after a thorough evaluation and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis. BACKGROUND: Sacral insufficiency fractures can be a debilitating cause of low back pain in the elderly population. While sacroplasty is recommended for the treatment of persistent pain from sacral insufficiency fractures, the anatomical location of Zone III fractures can put patients at a higher risk of neurological complications during repair.
CASE REPORT: We present a case of a 71-year-old woman with a Denis Zone III sacral insufficiency fracture who underwent percutaneous sacroplasty. The procedure was performed by utilizing an articulating osteotome in the long-axis approach along the cur

Neurofibromatosis 1 (NF1) is a rare genetic syndrome that leads to the development of neurofibromas and increases the risk of malignancy, including malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Patients with NF1 often have other orthopaedic manifestations, including short stature, osteopenia, and dysplasia. A 47-year-old patient with a history of NF1 and multiple neurofibromas of the right lower extremity presented with a severe valgus deformity, instability, and osteoarthritis of the right knee that was debilitating to daily life. Over time, the patient lost proprioception and potentially some se

This review investigated whether any therapeutic options influenced the outcome of treatment for teeth with external cervical resorption. Out of 870 articles identified by an electronic search, 60 clinical case reports and six case series were included. No randomised clinical trials were found. Risk of bias was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute's tools. External surgical intervention was the preferred method of accessing the lesions. Removal of resorptive tissue was most often achieved mechanically. Bioactive endodontic cements were the preferred materials for restoring teeth. The outcome

This study aimed to apply finite element analysis to evaluate the effects of pile materials with different elastic moduli and cement materials on the stress distribution between the remaining tooth tissue and cryptic fracture defects. A three-dimensional finite element model was established for 20 maxillary first molars with hidden fissures and mesial tongue-tip defects. Two levels of hidden cracks and three types of pile and adhesive materials were used in the design. The stress distribution and maximum stress peak in the remaining tooth tissue and crack defects were determined by simulating

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of continuity defects following osteonecrosis in multimorbid patients is challenging. In all cases of the predescribed palliative treatment method for alloplastic mandible reconstruction, plate fractures were detected in follow-up. We hypothesized that a modification could avoid these fractures, leading to stable long-term results.
METHODS: This retrospective study compares the original method with a modification using single, laser-sintered CAD-CAM plates instead of manually bent miniplates. The predescribed shuttering technique was used to reconstruct the mandible

SummarySciatic nerve injury after total hip replacement is rare with a reported incidence of about 0.09%-3.7%. The most commonly reported causes include traction on the nerve during reduction, compression of the nerve from subfascial haematoma, significant leg lengthening, improper retractor placement, thermal burns from cautery and extraneous cement. We present a case of complete sciatic nerve palsy in a patient operated on using direct anterior approach (DAA). To date, there are no reports describing sciatic nerve palsy secondary to haematoma immediately after primary arthroplasty through th
