Fractional urinary fluoride excretion and nail fluoride concentrations in normal, wasted and stunted 4-5 year-old children in Nepal.

INTRODUCTION: It has been suggested that undernourished children are more likely to develop dental fluorosis. We investigated the effects of nutritional status on systemic fluoride metabolism including the proportion of ingested fluoride excreted through urine (i.e. fractional urinary fluoride excretion - FUFE) and fluoride concentration in nail clippings in children, aged 4-5 years, in Nepal. METHODS: Nutritional status was evaluated using weight-for-age (wasting) and height-for-age (stunting) indices. Total daily fluoride intake (TDFI) was estimated from diet and toothpaste ingestion and 24

Development of Clinician-Reported Outcome (ClinRO) and Patient-Reported Outcome (PRO) Measures for Eyebrow, Eyelash and Nail Assessment in Alopecia Areata.

BACKGROUND: Eyebrow and eyelash hair loss and nail damage-in addition to scalp hair loss-are important signs/symptoms of alopecia areata (AA) to patients and deserve assessment in AA clinical trials. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to develop clinician-reported outcome (ClinRO) and patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures and accompanying photoguides to aid in the assessment of AA-related eyebrow, eyelash and nail signs/symptoms. METHODS: Iterative rounds of qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with US expert dermatologists and North American patients with AA. Patients with ey

Associations between intestinal parasitic infections, anaemia, and diarrhoea among school aged children, and the impact of hand-washing and nail clipping.

OBJECTIVE: In marginalized setting, under-nutrition and illnesses due to infectious agents create a vicious circle. In our previous study, we reported that easy-to-do hand hygiene interventions were effective in preventing intestinal parasite infections (IPIs) and reduce the rate of anaemia among school-aged children. The aim of this study was to assess the pattern of associations between IPIs, anaemia and diarrhoea among the school-aged children and to explore if the observed impact of hand-washing and nail clipping interventions in our findings was similar across children with different base

Intramedullary nailing via suprapatellar approach versus locked plating of proximal extra-articular tibial fractures: a randomized control trial.

OBJECTIVE: Currently, nailing through the suprapatellar approach and minimally invasive plating have been generally accepted in the management of displaced proximal tibial fractures. This investigation was aimed at comparing these two treatment methods in terms of their effectiveness and safety. METHODS: We randomized 328 patients into one of two groups: one underwent intramedullary nailing via the suprapatellar approach (IMN group), while the other underwent locking compressive plate (LCP group) placement. The primary outcome was the Iowa Knee Score at 12 months. The clinical history, amount

Proximal humeral nail for treatment of 3- and 4-part proximal humerus fractures in the elderly population: effective and safe in experienced hands.

BACKGROUND: Optimal treatment of 3- and 4-part proximal humerus fractures (PHFs) remains controversial. Although commonly recommended for less comminuted PHFs, the outcomes of treatment with proximal humerus nailing (PHN) are more equivocal. The purpose of this study was to report on radiographic and clinical outcomes of patients undergoing PHN fixation of 3- and 4-part PHFs at minimum one-year follow-up. Our hypothesis was that the findings would demonstrate satisfactory radiographic and clinical outcomes, with low rates of complications and revision surgeries. METHODS: Between 2008 and 2016

Non-traumatic Atypical Peri-implant Femoral Fracture at the Distal Screw after Short Femoral Nail Fixation for a Pertrochanteric Fracture.

This is the second report of an atypical peri-implant femoral fracture occurring at the distal screw after intramedullary nail fixation of a pertrochanteric fracture. A 94-year-old Japanese female with a 5-year history of alendronate intake presented with prodromal pain in her right thigh after intramedullary nail fixation. Plain radiographs showed an incomplete noncomminuted transverse fracture at the distal screw, suggesting an atypical peri-implant femoral fracture. The pathogenesis of an atypical peri-implant femoral fracture could be a combined systemic bone metabolism disorder and repeti

NURD 2.0: Prediction of tibial nonunion after intramedullary nail fixation at any time within 3 months after injury.

Introduction Nonunion after fixation of long bones negatively impacts outcomes and requires additional surgery. The ability to predict likelihood of nonunion after tibial shaft fracture would be helpful to clinicians and patients. The goal of this work was to combine three previous models of tibial shaft nonunion at different time points into one overall model that incorporates time as a continuous variable. Methods We conducted a retrospective review at a Level I academic trauma center. The study cohort consisted of patients with tibial shaft fractures treated with nail insertion from 2007 th

Intramedullary nailing and plating osteosynthesis in the correction of post-traumatic deformity in late-diagnosed distal radius fractures: a retrospective comparison study.

BACKGROUND: Various surgical modalities are available for correction of deformity in late-diagnosed distal radius fractures. This study compared surgical outcomes between intramedullary nailing and plating osteosynthesis in open-wedge osteotomy. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 47 unilateral distal radius fractures that underwent open-wedge osteotomy at more than 4 weeks after injury between 2006 and 2011. A locally resected exuberant callus was used as the bone graft. Two types of fixation were used: intramedullary nail in 22 patients (group A) and locking plate in 25 patients (group B).

Repair of the superior sagittal sinus following penetrating intracranial injury caused by nail gun accident: case report and technical note.

We report a 45-year-old man who suffered a penetrating nail gun injury resulting in damage to the lateral edge of the superior sagittal sinus. The injury was successfully treated via a parasagittal craniotomy that enabled removal of the nail under direct vision, allowing for rapid suturing of the sagittal sinus. Two neurosurgeons worked together; one carefully withdrew the tip of the nail back into the sinus itself while the second rapidly sutured the hole in the inner superior sagittal sinus leaflet. Postoperatively, the patient made a rapid recovery without neurological deficit.

Traumatic Posterior Dislocation of Hip with Ipsilateral Fracture of Shaft of Femur: Temporary Fixator-assisted Reduction and Final Fixation with Interlocking Nail.

Ipsilateral fracture of the shaft of femur and dislocation of the hip are very rare injuries. There always exists a dilemma regarding the treatment to reduce hip and choosing the appropriate method of fixation for a femur fracture, and a clear consensus is yet to be reached. A number of treatment methods such as the open reduction of femur and fixation followed by hip reduction have been tried so far. Ipsilateral fractures and dislocation occur due to high-energy trauma, and reduction of hip dislocation is considered as an orthopedic emergency. Here, we report a case in which we tried a novel ap

Prosthesis-Engaging Retrograde Femoral Nail with Locking Plate for the Treatment of a Vancouver B1 Periprosthetic Femur Fracture Nonunion: A Case Report.

CASE: Here, we describe a case of a Vancouver B1 periprosthetic femur fracture which initially went on to nonunion after open reduction and internal fixation. Union was ultimately achieved with a construct consisting of a prosthesis-engaging retrograde femoral nail and a locking compression plate. CONCLUSIONS: This case provides evidence that a construct consisting of a prosthesis-engaging retrograde femoral nail and a locking compression plate is an option for increasing fracture site stability in Vancouver B1 periprosthetic fractures and may be useful for patients with poor bone quality or
