BACKGROUND: Pleuroperitoneal communication (PPC) is an uncommon, but potentially life-threatening complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). If a fistula does not close with conservative treatment, surgical repair is required. However, approximately half of these patients are forced to shift from PD to hemodialysis. Although it is important to confirm the site of the fistula to achieve a successful surgical treatment, this identification is more difficult in pediatric patients than in adults.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report two infantile cases of severe PPC associated with PD. In both cases, the

The median-to-ulnar communicating branch (MUC) is an asymptomatic variant of the upper limb innervation that can lead to interpretation errors in routine nerve conduction studies. The diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or ulnar nerve lesions can be complicated by the presence of MUC. In this study, we describe electrophysiological features of MUC in CTS patients presenting to our clinic. We enrolled MUB cases from consecutive CTS patients referred to our laboratory between the years 2014 and 2019. MUC was present in 53 limbs (36 patients) from the studied population. MUC was bilateral i

Our aim was to quantify successful completion of steps of the latent tuberculosis (LTBI) care cascade in a community health center (CHC) with a large foreign-born population. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of individuals with a positive test for tuberculosis (TB) infection from 2015 to 2017 at Baltimore Medical Systems (BMS). During the study period, 3,984 individuals were tested for TB. Of the 418 individuals with positive tests, 152 (36%) were referred elsewhere for care, whereas 266 (64%) were retained in care at BMS. Treatment was prescribed for 157 of the 214 (73%) diagnosed wi

BACKGROUND: Affective and interpersonal behavioural patterns characteristic of social anxiety disorder show improvement during treatment with serotonin agonists (e.g., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors), commonly used in the treatment of social anxiety disorder. The present study sought to establish whether, during community psychopharmacological treatment of social anxiety disorder, changes in positive or negative affect and agreeable or quarrelsome behaviour mediate improvement in social anxiety symptom severity or follow from it.
METHODS: Adults diagnosed with social anxiety disorder

PURPOSE: Literature on children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) suggests overall increased rates of difficulties in emotional/behavioral and adaptive functioning. However, limitations of this literature include the failure to integrate issues unique to the experience of children who are DHH, such as home and school communication modalities and the consistency of modalities across settings.
METHOD: This study examined de-identified data from a clinical database. Data included caregiver ratings of emotional/behavioral and adaptive functioning in a diverse sample of clinically referred chi

Research indicates that rural transgender and gender diverse (TGD) populations have a greater need for health services when compared with their urban counterparts, face unique barriers to accessing services, and have health disparities that are less researched than urban TGD populations. Therefore, the primary aim of this mixed-methods study (n = 24) was to increase research on the health care needs of TGD people in a rural Appalachian American context. This study was guided by a community-engaged model utilizing a community advisory board of TGD people and supportive parents of TGD children.

Lower limb amputation (LLA) is still a health issue requiring rehabilitation and long-term care even in industrial societies. Several studies on subjects with LLA have been focused on the efficacy of rehabilitation and factors influencing the use of prosthesis. However, literature data on the recovery of ability to walk outdoors, and thus to participate in social life in this population is limited. To investigate potential correlations between socio-demographic and clinical factors, and the use of the prosthesis for indoor and/or outdoor walking referred to as community ambulation (CA) in subje
