A Preliminary Study on Quantitative Quality Measurements of the Urethral Rhabdosphincter Muscle by Supersonic Shear Wave Imaging in Women With Stress Urinary Incontinence.

OBJECTIVES: To quantitatively assess the quality of the urethral rhabdosphincter muscle by measuring its shear wave velocity (Vs ) and calculating the Young modulus (E) with supersonic shear wave imaging (SSI). METHODS: This was a prospective study of 43 women with SUI and 52 female control participants who underwent a transperineal US examination with SSI. Supersonic shear wave imaging was performed at rest with a linear transducer and a specialized-preset procedure. The stability and validity of the shear waves were automatically assessed by the SSI procedure. The SSI images were visualized

Advances in non-invasive assessment of hepatic fibrosis.

Liver fibrosis should be assessed in all individuals with chronic liver disease as it predicts the risk of future liver-related morbidity and thus need for treatment, monitoring and surveillance. Non-invasive fibrosis tests (NITs) overcome many limitations of liver biopsy and are now routinely incorporated into specialist clinical practice. Simple serum-based tests (eg, Fibrosis Score 4, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease Fibrosis Score) consist of readily available biochemical surrogates and clinical risk factors for liver fibrosis (eg, age and sex). These have been extensively validated acros

Liver Ultrasound Elastography: Review of Techniques and Clinical Applications.

Chronic liver disease remains a substantial worldwide problem. Accurate estimation of liver fibrosis is crucial for determining the stage of the disease, assessing the patient's prognosis and predicting treatment response. Staging hepatic fibrosis has traditionally been done with liver biopsy but clinical practice has been changing, partly because liver biopsy has several disadvantages: it is invasive; it is associated with rare but serious complications; and it is prone to sampling error representing a tiny portion of the total liver volume. An increasing number of non-invasive liver fibrosis

Liver stiffness as measured by two-dimensional shear wave elastography overestimates the stage of fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B and hepatic steatosis.

Two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) is a non-invasive technique for measuring liver stiffness (LS) and is used to assess the degree of hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Despite its usefulness, several factors, other than hepatic fibrosis, can affect its diagnostic accuracy. Hepatic steatosis (HS) is a common lesion in CHB that has increasingly been getting attention in the field of disease development; however, its influence on the measurement of LS remains unclear. We aimed to determine whether HS affects the diagnostic accuracy of 2D-SWE in patients wi

Emerging technologies in neuromuscular ultrasound.

Neuromuscular ultrasound is an accepted and valuable element in the evaluation of peripheral nerve and muscle disease. However, ultrasound has several limitations to consider, including operator dependency and lack of a viable contrast agent. Fortunately, new technological advances show promise in resolving these issues. Ultra-high resolution ultrasound enables imaging of the nerve at the fascicular level. Shear wave elastography imaging can provide measures of tissue stiffness that can act as a surrogate measure of nerve and muscle health. Photoacoustic imaging may overcome neuromuscular ultr

A new framework for characterization of poroelastic materials using indentation.

To characterize a poroelastic material, typically an indenter is pressed onto the surface of the material with a ramp of a finite approach v … n interstitial fluid. It has been shown that these materials behave according to the theory of 'poroelasticity' when mechanically stimulated in a way similar to that experienced in organs within the body. In this theory, the rate at which the fluid-filled sponge can be deformed is limited by how fast interstitial fluid can redistribute within the sponge in r …

Influence of nanocellulose on mechanics and morphology of polyvinyl alcohol xerogels.

Xerogels are porous networks of crosslinked polymers that are useful for biomedical applications such as drug delivery, scaffold engineering, tissue regeneration, cell culture and wound dressing. However, inferior mechanical properties curtail their applications to a considerable extent. Nanocellulose fibers and crystals are often added into the polymer matrix to improve their mechanical strength. Here, nanocellulose in the mass ratios of 7%, 13% and 18% are loaded into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix followed by thermo-morpho-mechanical characterization. With increase in nanocellulose content,

Quantitative characterization of viscoelastic behavior in tissue-mimicking phantoms and ex vivo animal tissues.

Viscoelasticity of soft tissue is often related to pathology, and therefore, has become an important diagnostic indicator in the clinical assessment of suspect tissue. Surgeons, particularly within head and neck subsites, typically use palpation techniques for intra-operative tumor detection. This detection method, however, is highly subjective and often fails to detect small or deep abnormalities. Vibroacoustography (VA) and similar methods have previously been used to distinguish tissue with high-contrast, but a firm understanding of the main contrast mechanism has yet to be verified. The co…

Mechanical Modeling of a Keratoconic Cornea.

PURPOSE: We created a laboratory model of a cornea that was subjected to various pressures and thermal and mechanical factors to better understand the genesis of keratoconus deformation. METHODS: A steel base allowed for fixation of circular multilaminated patches of araldite (10 cm in diameter, 5 mm thick) in which the corneal anatomy was modeled. The model was plunged into a steam room (374°F/3 bars of pressure for 1 h) to ensure thermal homogeneity and was subjected to pressure using compressed air. Three models were assessed: a fault-free model with no lesion (model 1), and 2 models with
