Particle engineering, aerosol physics, and pulmonary deposition of single-inhaler triple ICS/LABA/LAMA therapies in obstructive airway diseases.

Single-inhaler triple therapy (SITT) combining an inhaled corticosteroid, long-acting β2-agonist, and long-acting muscarinic antagonist (ICS/LABA/LAMA) represents the current ceiling of inhaled pharmacotherapy for moderate-to-very-severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and severe uncontrolled asthma. Five device platforms are currently approved: two extrafine formulations delivering beclomethasone dipropionate/formoterol/glycopyrronium (the Modulite solution pressurised metered-dose inhaler [pMDI] and the NEXThaler breath-actuated dry powder inhaler [DPI]); the co-suspension pMDI Aerosph

CAR-engineering of innate and innate-like immune cells: a new horizon in adoptive cell therapy for solid tumors.

BACKGROUND: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) therapies have revolutionized cancer immunotherapy, particularly in hematologic malignancies, but their efficacy in solid tumors remains limited. Key barriers include tumor antigen heterogeneity, on-target/off-tumor toxicity, impaired trafficking, and an immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment. METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of preclinical and clinical studies investigating CAR-engineered innate and innate-like immune cells, including CAR-natural killer, CAR-γδ T, CAR-natural killer T (NKT), and CAR-macrophages, focusing on their biologic

Acceptor Engineering-Mediated Charge-Transfer Control: A Hierarchical Framework for Predictive Design of High-Performance Type I AIE Photosensitizers.

This study presents a hierarchical multi-parameter framework for designing hypoxia-tolerant Type I aggregation-induced emission (AIE) photosensitizers through acceptor engineering. Enhancing electron-withdrawing capacity strengthens intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in singlet excited states (Sn), enabling a direct charge transfer-mediated intersystem crossing (ISC) pathway. Key parameters-favorable singlet-triplet gap (ΔE > 0, thermodynamic prerequisite), low reorganization energy (λ, kinetic driver), and strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC, ISC activator)-optimize ISC efficiency, an exception

Machine-learning-enabled solvent engineering for uniform quantum dot packing in efficient and stable quantum-dot light-emitting diodes.

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) offer size-tunable optoelectronic properties and solution processability, yet achieving uniformly packed emissive layers remains a bottleneck for high-performance quantum-dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). Here, we report a machine learning -guided solvent optimization strategy to produce homogeneous QD films. Five representative solvent parameters are evaluated, and multiple regression models are trained against film uniformity derived from atomic force microscopy. Among them, support vector regression provides the highest predictive accuracy for film homogeneity.

Engineering interfacial molecular bridge APTES enhancing Li+ transport and interface stability in Al2O3/PVDF-HFP composite solid-state electrolytes.

To address the demand for safe, high-energy-density lithium-metal batteries, we developed a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based composite electrolyte via an "interfacial molecular bridge" strategy. γ-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) molecules are covalently anchored onto Aluminum oxide (Al2O3) fillers, where the terminal NH2 groups act as Lewis base sites to immobilize bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion(TFSI-) anions, releasing free Li+ and boosting the transference number from 0.42 to 0.66. Concurrently, the uniformly dispersed fillers suppress PVDF-HFP c

Hydrogen-bond network engineering in deep eutectic solvent-infused hydrogel electrolyte for boosting dendritic-free aqueous zinc-ion batteries.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) suffer from dendrite growth and interfacial side reactions caused by uncontrolled Zn2+ transport and solvation behavior. While hydrogel electrolytes improve safety by preventing leakage, their performance is often constrained by limited water regulation, slow ion transport, and weak mechanical properties. Here, we develop a deep eutectic solvent (DES)-modified polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel electrolyte (DEAM), where hydrogen-bond network engineering enables synergistic regulation of Zn2+ transport and deposition behavior. By incorporating a choline chloride/et

Engineering and application of a recombinant Aspergillus niger CECT 2907 tannase to enhance the antioxidant activity of black tea.

BACKGROUND: Tannases (tannin acyl hydrolases, EC 3.1.1.20) catalyze the hydrolysis of galloylated polyphenols, releasing gallic acid and other bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties. These enzymes have a wide range of applications in the food and beverage industry, particularly for improving tea quality. In this study, a tannase gene from Aspergillus niger CECT 2907 was cloned and heterologously expressed in Komagataella phaffii. Two recombinant variants were generated: a double-chain enzyme (AnTanDC) and a single-chain variant (AnTanSC) obtained by mutating two Kex2 protease cleavage

Coordination Microenvironment Engineering in Nanoconfined Structures Shifts Peracetic Acid Activation toward Broad-Spectrum Radicals for Enhanced Hospital Wastewater Purification.

Peracetic acid (PAA) presents a promising solution for hospital wastewater treatment, by integrating direct disinfection with the catalytic generation of oxidative species for pollutant degradation. While nanoconfined catalysts exhibit high efficiency and low metal leaching in PAA activation, their reactive outputs have been largely confined to limited broad-spectrum pollutant removal in such complex wastewater. Herein, we break the traditional paradigm of nanoconfined catalysts favoring nonradical pathways by modulating the iron coordination microenvironment within novel carbon nanotube-confi

Pore Engineering of Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes via Confined Ionic Liquids for Simultaneous Enhancement of Gas Permeability and Selectivity.

Efforts for the enhancement of membranes for efficient gas separation are crucial to address challenges in carbon capture and hydrogen economy applications. A novel pore engineering strategy for CMS membranes via ionic liquids (ILs) is presented in this work. Analysis revealed that [Emim][Tf2N] functioned as a porogen and a structural modulator during carbonization, creating interconnected pore channels that facilitated efficient gas transport pathways while enabling appropriate d-spacing (3.55 Å) and precise pore formation (2.5-3.5 Å) for size-sieving of H2 (2.89 Å) and CO2 (3.3 Å). Giant Internal Electric Field in Ni-Modified Perylenetetracarboxylic Acid Supramolecule via Metal-Coordination Engineering for Efficient Photocatalytic H2 Evolution.

Developing efficient supramolecular photocatalysts is essential for green H2 production using solar energy, yet their performance is often limited by inefficient photogenerated charge separation. Herein, this study innovatively employs the coordination-driven self-assembly of Ni2+ ions and perylenetetracarboxylic acid (PTA) to construct a Ni-PTA supramolecular photocatalyst, achieving significantly enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution performance. Experimental and theoretical results confirm that Ni2+ ions are inserted into PTA interlayers via monodentate coordination with carboxyl groups, ind

Dual-Ligand Engineering of Atomic Co/Fe Sites With S-Dopants and CoFe Alloys for Superior Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysis.

The rational design of high-efficiency bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts is fundamental to advancing rechargeable zinc-air batteries, yet it remains constrained by mismatched adsorption energies and sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR/OER). Herein, a dual-ligand engineering strategy is reported to construct a hierarchical catalyst (CoFe-SA-NP@SNC) featuring atomically dispersed Co/Fe-N4 sites, integrated S-dopants, and confined CoFe alloy nanoparticles within an S,N-codoped carbon framework. A ZIF-mediated dual-template synthesis strategy facilitates the c

In Situ Engineering of Strongly Coupled RuO2-MoO3 Heterointerface for Ultra-Stable Bifunctional Electrocatalysis toward Alkaline and Seawater Electrolysis.

Ruthenium (Ru)-based materials are promising catalysts for alkaline water electrolysis; however, their practical application is severely limited by insufficient activity and poor stability. To address these challenges, we proposed an in situ gas-phase transformation strategy that constructs strongly coupled heterointerfaces with atomic-scale intimate contact, yielding the RuO2-MoO3/CC catalyst. Owing to the robust interface structure, the catalyst drives the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with overpotentials of 44 mV in alkaline water and 46 mV in alkaline seawater at 10 mA cm- 2, and the o

Driving factors and spatial differentiation of soil organic carbon density in the Three-North Shelterbelt Engineering Region of China.

Against the backdrop of the Three-North Shelterbelt Engineering of China (TNSEC), identifying the drivers of soil organic carbon and its spatial variation is of great significance for supporting the national dual carbon strategy. The TNSEC has already carried out large-scale afforestation projects in many regions, including agricultural shelterbelts, water conservation forests, soil and water conservation forests, windbreak and sand fixation forests, and pasture protection forests. Based on 958 observed soil organic carbon density (SOCD) data points, this study combines structural equation mod

Multistate Ferroelectric Memory for in-Memory Differential Computing in C‑Axis‑Oriented HZO‑ZrO2 Films Enabled by Interfacial Engineering.

The von Neumann bottleneck limits energy-efficient computing. While ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide (HZO) memories are promising for in-memory computing, achieving high speed, endurance, and reliable multilevel control remains challenging. This work addresses these challenges through interfacial engineering with an ultrathin ZrO2 seed layer. Atomic-resolution microscopy reveals that this interlayer promotes preferential c-axis orientation of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase, aligning the polarization axis with the applied electric field. This enables nanosecond (6 ns) switching, long

An engineering strategy from biomass support to a precision-recognition interface: amino acid-assisted imprinted polymers for protein adsorption.

An integrated strategy was developed to fabricate papain-imprinted polymers using magnetic biochar derived from waste tangerine peel. The biochar surface was modified with amino acids to improve protein affinity, and a biocompatible imprinting layer was subsequently formed through the mild polymerization of dual functional monomers. The optimized imprinted polymers exhibited high adsorption capacity (197.31 mg/g), strong selectivity (IF = 6.12), and robust reusability. Their utility was demonstrated through one-step selective purification of papain from complex samples, including crude commerc

Tailoring NIR-II Fluorescence and Photothermal Properties via Side-Chain Engineering for Vascular Imaging and Image-Guided Tumor Therapy.

Second near-infrared (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) fluorescence imaging (FLI)-guided photothermal therapy is a promising non-invasive strategy for tumor theranostics. However, existing photothermal agents struggle to balance high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) with strong fluorescence quantum yield (QY). Herein, an alkoxyl side chain engineering strategy was proposed to construct a series of donor-π bridge-acceptor-π bridge-donor (D-π-A-π-D) structured organic photothermal agents (TTQ1-TTQ6) enabling simultaneous NIR-II FLI-guided photothermal therapy. By introducing different alkoxyl side
