Investigation of hearing aid fitting according to the national acoustic laboratories' prescription for non-linear hearing aids and the desired sensation level methods in Japanese speakers: a crossover-controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: Some studies have directly compared the National Acoustic Laboratories' prescription for non-linear hearing aids (HAs) version 2 (NAL-NL2) and Desired Sensation Level for non-linear HAs version 5 (DSLv5), although none were performed in Japan. As the Japanese language is a tonal language that has different linguistic characteristics than those of the studied languages, we compared the outcomes of the NAL-NL2 and DSLv5 in hearing-impaired Japanese participants. METHODS: A crossover-controlled trial was conducted on 18 first-time HA users with bilateral moderate sensorineural hearing…

The Comparison of the Morphological and Syntactic Awareness Skills of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students Regarding Agreement and Tense Categories that Exist in Verbs in Reading Activities with those of Students Without Hearing Disabilities.

The difficulties in learning skills that deaf and hard of hearing students encounter stem from morphology and syntactic morphology (morpho-syntax) and it is clear that there are limited studies related to these. In this study, it is aimed at examining hearing and deaf and hard of hearing students' morpho-syntactic actions which are compatible with the Turkish Sign Language and the awareness skills of these actions in the time categories. In total 122 students; 57 deaf and hard of hearing students from secondary and high school and 65 hearing students have participated this study. The data is g…

Lack of collagen α6(IV) chain in mice does not cause severe-to-profound hearing loss or cochlear malformation, a distinct phenotype from nonsyndromic hearing loss with COL4A6 missense mutation.

Congenital hearing loss affects 1 in every 1000 births, with genetic mutations contributing to more than 50% of all cases. X-linked nonsyndromic hereditary hearing loss is associated with six loci (DFNX1-6) and five genes. Recently, the missense mutation (c.1771G>A, p.Gly591Ser) in COL4A6, encoding the basement membrane (BM) collagen α6(IV) chain, was shown to be associated with X-linked congenital nonsyndromic hearing loss with cochlear malformation. However, the mechanism by which the COL4A6 mutation impacts hereditary hearing loss has not yet been elucidated. Herein, we investigated Col4a6 …

Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial evaluating the benefits from bimodal solution with cochlear implant and hearing aid versus bilateral hearing aids in patients with asymmetric speech identification scores.

INTRODUCTION: Cochlear implant (CI) and hearing aid (HA) in a bimodal solution (CI+HA) is compared with bilateral HAs (HA+HA) to test if the bimodal solution results in better speech intelligibility and self-reported quality of life. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This randomised controlled trial is conducted in Odense University Hospital, Denmark. Sixty adult bilateral HA users referred for CI surgery are enrolled if eligible and undergo: audiometry, speech perception in noise (HINT: Hearing in Noise Test), Speech Identification Scores and video head impulse test. All participants will receive new re…

Effects of FM system fitted into the normal hearing ear orcartilage conduction hearing aid fitted into the affected ear on speech-in-noise recognition in Japanese children with unilateral congenital aural atresia.

The effects of FM system fitted into the normal hearing ear (NHE) or a cartilage conduction hearing aid (CCHA) fitted into the affected ear (AE) on the speech recognition ability in noise were examined in children with unilateral congenital aural atresia (UCAA). In children with bilateral normal hearing (BNH), speech recognition score (SRS) was significantly decreased in the noisy environment of -5 dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), compared with those in quiet. In children with UCAA, SRS was significantly decreased in noisy environments of 0 and -5 dB SNR, compared with those in quiet. In noisy …

Serial Monitoring of Hearing With Otoacoustic Emissions: Effects of Forward Pressure Level Calibration.

OBJECTIVES: To use otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) for the serial monitoring of hearing or the tracking of hearing loss, test-retest reliability must be known, and normal OAE level variation must be established. Past studies have defined the reliability of distortion-product OAEs (DPOAEs) evoked with stimuli calibrated in a conventional manner (in-the-ear, dB sound pressure level), which can produce inaccuracies due to ear-canal standing waves. In the present study, we make within-subject comparisons of test reliability for conventionally measured 2 f1 - f2 DPOAEs compared with DPOAEs evoked by s…

GJB2-Related Hearing Loss: Genotype-Phenotype Correlations, Natural History, and Emerging Therapeutic Strategies.

This review integrates molecular, clinical, and translational data to provide an updated understanding of GJB2-related deafness and its emerging treatment landscape. Truncating mutations in GJB2 typically cause severe-profound hearing loss (HL) phenotypes, whereas non-truncating alleles are often associated with milder or progressive phenotypes. Geographic variation in variant prevalence contributes to regional differences in disease burden. Beyond the coding region, deletions and cis-regulatory mutations within the DFNB1 locus, including GJB6 and CRYL1, can influence HL severity when compound…

Stereotype threat effects on deaf and hard-of-hearing college students' mathematics performance.

This study examined whether stereotype threat degrades deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) college students' math performance. The DHH participants self-assigned their social identity as "deaf" or "hard of hearing" irrespective of audiological assessment. Social identity is central to experiencing stereotype threat and being deaf or hard of hearing may activate negative biases which trigger a stereotype threat that impacts test performance. A sample of college students (216 deaf, 128 hard of hearing, 152 hearing) were randomly assigned to either a stereotype threat or no-threat test condition and t…

Longitudinal adaptations in neural and behavioral systems following hearing restoration using cochlear implants.

Cochlear implants (CIs) restore hearing in people with severe-to-profound hearing loss, but how behavioral and neural adaptations unfold after implantation remains unclear, particularly during continuous speech processing. Most longitudinal studies of postimplant plasticity have used simple auditory stimuli, limiting insight into continuous-speech processing in complex environments. We followed 19 newly implanted adult CI users at activation and at 3, 6, and 12 mo after activation. At each session, participants completed speech recognition testing in quiet and noise, a spatial triple-digit tes…

Therapeutic Timing at Mitochondrial Redox-Autophagy-Mitophagy Checkpoints in Age-Related Hearing Loss.

Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is common, disabling, and still managed largely with compensatory devices rather than mechanism-modifying therapy. The major weakness in the current translational pipeline is not the absence of candidate pathways, but the lack of a timing framework that links cochlear phenotype, mitochondrial injury state, and intervention intensity. This revised Review therefore focuses on a staged mitochondrial redox-quality-control model. We argue that ARHL emerges when high-energy cochlear compartments-outer and inner hair cells, spiral ganglion neurons, and the lateral wall…

Degree-based and functional descriptions of paediatric hearing loss: a retrospective chart review.

OBJECTIVE: The report from a paediatric audiology assessment is a lasting record of clinical events and a channel for sharing information about hearing loss, but we lack information about current practices in this area. DESIGN: We completed a retrospective chart review from infants with congenital hearing loss. STUDY SAMPLE: We analysed 374 reports to investigate how audiologists described hearing loss using a closed category set based on the level of descriptive information provided. We also analysed which child-level and clinic-level factors predict a report category. RESULTS: Most report…

Audiological Outcomes of Salvage Intratympanic Corticosteroid Therapy in Idiopathic Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Intratympanic corticosteroids (ITCs) are used to treat patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL) when systemic therapy has been unsuccessful. However, the efficacy of this treatment remains uncertain. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed ISSNHL patients at a tertiary reference centre, who received ITC injections following unsuccessful systemic corticosteroid therapy administered either orally or intravenously. Patients were eligible for ITC if they showed insufficient improvement after systemic treatment, defined as a remaining hearing lo…

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Acute Acoustic Trauma: Blast versus Noise-Induced Hearing Loss.

BACKGROUND: Blast injuries impair hearing through several mechanisms that are distinct from other causes of acute acoustic trauma (AAT). OBJECTIVES: To compare blast injured patients to those exposed to noise alone in their auditory response to hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy with oral steroids. METHODS: Adult patients with evidence of a previously undocumented ≥ 30 dB pure-tone threshold within 30 days of AAT were treated with a combination of one 2.5 atm HBO therapy session for 90 minutes daily with oral prednisone. Exposure was classified by history as blast (for explosion-induced AAT) or…
