The objective of this study was to define current blood transfusion practices among European pediatric intensive care physicians treating critically ill children. A questionnaire of case scenarios was administered to members of the European Society of Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care (ESPNIC). Of the 258 members of the ESPNIC, 134 (51.9%) pediatric intensive care physicians completed the questionnaire. Presenilin-1 (PS1) is a gene responsible for the development of early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease. To explore the potential roles of PS1 in vascular development, we examined the vascular system of mouse embryos lacking PS1. At this time, the accumulated evidence does not support the implementation of measures targeted against the risk of transfusion transmission of sporadic, familial, or iatrogenic CJD. Evolving information about vCJD, however, suggests that policy makers need to consider implementing measures to protect against exposure to vCJD, if such measures themselves do not lead to decreased blood safety. Surveillance of human TSEs and investigation of the risk of transfusion transmission must continue in order to provide further refinements in blood safety policy.

This paper will examine the literature on blood loss at delivery and report the findings of a small pilot study where midwives and doctors were asked to estimate blood loss at simulated stations. The results were analysed using simple frequency distribution. This simple study demonstrated that midwives and other health professionals underestimate blood loss at delivery by 30-50%. The implication for midwives is that there is a need to double their estimated blood loss at delivery when it is over 500 ml.
