AIM: Staplers used in ileocolic anastomosis construction differ in length and height. We assessed the impact of stapler type in creating ileocolic anastomoses on postoperative outcomes.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study of an Institutional Review Board approved database included patients who underwent laparoscopic right colectomy for cancer between January 2011 and August 2021. All patients had construction of extracorporeal antiperistaltic stapled ileocolic anastomosis using a linear cutting stapler. Main outcome measures were short-term (<30 day) morbidity and mortality.
RESULTS: In

AIM: The aim was to determine whether specialist-led habit training using Habit Training with Biofeedback (HTBF) is more effective than specialist-led habit training alone (HT) for chronic constipation and whether outcomes of interventions are improved by stratification to HTBF or HT based on diagnosis (functional defaecation disorder vs. no functional defaecation disorder) by radio-physiological investigations (INVEST).
METHOD: This was a parallel three-arm randomized single-blinded controlled trial, permitting two randomized comparisons: HTBF versus HT alone; INVEST- versus no-INVEST-guided

AIM: Appendiceal neoplasms are rare subtypes of colorectal tumours that mainly affect younger patients some 20 years earlier than other colon tumours. The aim of this study was to gain more insight into the histological subtypes of this rare disease and include cases previously excluded, such as mucinous neoplasia.
METHOD: The cohort study included 1097 patients from the Munich Cancer Registry (MCR) diagnosed between 1998 and 2020. Joinpoint analysis was used to determine trend in incidence. Baseline demographic comparisons and survival analyses using competing risk and univariate/multivariat

AIM: Neoadjuvant rectal (NAR) score is an early surrogate for longer-term outcomes in rectal cancer undergoing radiotherapy and resection. In an era of increasing organ preservation, resection specimens are not always available to calculate the NAR score. Post-treatment magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) re-staging of regression is subjective, limiting reproducibility. We explored the potential for a novel MRI-based NAR score (mrNAR) adapted from the NAR formula.
METHODS: Locally advanced rectal cancer patients undergoing neoadjuvant therapy (nCRT) and surgery were retrospectively identified be

AIM: The aim was to explore how findings of whole-body MRI including diffusion-weighted imaging (DW-MRI) compared to the routine diagnostic workup with CT and/or 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)/CT in patients with suspected recurrent colorectal cancer (CRC).
METHOD: This was an exploratory retrospective analysis of 55 patients with a clinical suspicion of recurrent CRC who underwent DW-MRI following CT and/or FDG-PET/CT. Two readers in consensus interpreted all clinical imaging reports and converted each described lesion into a confidence score (1 = definitely

AIM: Self-efficacy in stoma care is essential, as it reduces morbidity and psychosocial problems. Mobile applications (apps) may optimise patients' self-efficacy. This article investigates patients' satisfaction with stoma care, their attitudes towards a supporting app aiming to promote self-efficacy and evaluate which functionalities are desired.
METHOD: A survey was sent to members of the two stoma-related patient associations in the Netherlands. Associations between patient characteristics, satisfaction concerning received stoma care, and willingness to use an app were evaluated.

AIM: Proper education, guidance and support is crucial before and following creation of a stoma. Patients with a stoma and their close relatives need to adapt to and cope with this new - and sometimes unforeseen - situation, which may result in insecurities and a variety of psychosocial problems. Self-efficacy is associated both with a reduction in psychosocial problems and with improved quality of life. The main objective of this study was to investigate whether self-reported quality of life of patients with a stoma can be enhanced by offering personalized and timed guidance, as well as peer

AIM: Laser haemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) is an emerging nonexcisional surgical procedure in which the arteriovenous flow of the haemorrhoidal plexus is interrupted through laser coagulation. The aim of this cohort study was to assess efficacy of LHP in treating symptomatic haemorrhoidal disease through patient satisfaction, remission of symptoms (blood loss, pain, itching, soiling, mucosal prolapse) and recurrence of haemorrhoids.
METHODS: Patients who underwent treatment for symptomatic haemorrhoids (degrees 1-4) through an LHP procedure between 2015 and 2021 were included in the study. A 1470 nm

AIM: Intraperitoneal drains are often placed during emergency colorectal surgery. However, there is a lack of evidence supporting their use. This study aimed to describe the efficacy and safety of intraperitoneal drain placement after emergency colorectal surgery.
METHOD: COMPlicAted intra-abdominal collectionS after colorectal Surgery (COMPASS) is a prospective, international, cohort study into which consecutive adult patients undergoing emergency colorectal surgery were enrolled (from 3 February 2020 to 8 March 2020). The primary outcome was the rate of intraperitoneal drain placement. Seco

AIM: Although complete mesocolic excision (CME) for colon cancer is oncologically sound, to date, there has been no consensus on the extent of lymphadenectomy in radical right colectomy. This study essentially compared the perioperative and survival outcomes of CME with two templates of lymphadenectomy for right colon cancer.
METHOD: This was a propensity matched, retrospective analysis of a single centre, prospectively maintained database of all patients undergoing elective right colectomy for nonmetastatic, biopsy-proven adenocarcinoma from November 2013 to October 2018. CME + D3 was adopte

AIM: Young women undergoing radiotherapy (RT) for pelvic malignancies are at risk of developing premature ovarian insufficiency. Ovarian transposition (OT) aims to preserve ovarian function in these patients. However, its role in anorectal malignancy has yet to be firmly established. The aim of this review was to determine the effectiveness of laparoscopic OT in preserving ovarian function in premenopausal women undergoing neoadjuvant pelvic RT for anorectal malignancies.
METHODS: MEDLINE, Embase and CENTRAL were systematically searched from inception through to May 2022. Articles were includ

AIM: Diverting loop ileostomy reversal (DLI-R) is routinely performed from 2-6 months following ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA). The safety of delayed reversal after IPAA is not well-defined. The aim of this study was to determine if prolonged diversion is associated with adverse outcomes compared to routine closure.
METHODS: Adult patients undergoing primary IPAA with DLI from 2000 to 2021 were included in this retrospective cohort study from our institutional database. Patients were stratified into tertiles based on timing of reversal: Routine (56-116 days), Delayed (117-180 days), or P

AIM: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a hereditary, life-limiting, multi-system condition that results in chronic respiratory infections, pancreatic insufficiency and intestinal inflammation. Evidence indicates that CF patients develop colorectal cancer (CRC) earlier and more often than the general population. Intestinal dysbiosis resulting from genetics and CF treatment is a contributing factor. This systematic review aims to evaluate the literature to compare the microbiome of adult CF patients to non-CF patients and to assess if these changes correspond with known CRC microbiome alterations.

AIM: Perianal Paget's disease (PAPD) is a rare disorder with a predisposition to anal and colorectal malignancies and an unclear prognosis. Our previous 25-year series demonstrated a non-aggressive nature. This study aims to describe our updated institutional experience.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with primary PAPD from 1991 to 2021. A prospectively maintained institutional database was searched which included demographics, clinical and pathological manifestations, treatment methods, recurrence, oncological outcome and mortality.
RESULTS: Thirty patient
