Personality characteristics such as anxiety and anger have long been associated with essential hypertension, but the results of past studies have often been confounded by inadequate diagnosis of hypertension, antihypertensive medications, and use of unvalidated measures of personality. Moreover, little attention has been given to the importance of differential exposure to medical attention and labeling as determinants of personality. An immunoassay based on a monoclonal antibody specific for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was used prospectively over a two year period to screen second trimester amniotic fluids for fetal abnormalities. Routine examination and early treatment of any instability in the hips of newborns has recently been called into question after a period of universal agreement. Carcinoma of the breast is the commonest cause of mortality due to malignancy in women in England and Wales. Mammographic screening, with or without clinical examination, is being used increasingly to detect lesions at an earlier stage. Of 5379 patients who had received radiation treatment at our institution for benign conditions of the head and neck, 318 developed thyroid cancer 3 to 42 years later. We report follow-up observations (median interval from diagnosis to recurrence or last contact, 10 years; longest interval, 31) for 296 of these patients. All children who have impaired vision, suspected strabismus or heterophoria, suspected eye disease or ocular discomfort, are sent for an eye examination to the ophthalmologist at the Community Health Centre, Kuopio. The effects of neonatal diagnostic screening on cystic-fibrosis (CF) -related morbidity were evaluated by comparing hospital admissions for CF-related illness in the first 2 years of life in 40 patients detected by means of neonatal screening and 56 patients born in the 3 years before screening began.
