Cytokine Consistency Between Bone Marrow and Peripheral Blood in Patients With Philadelphia-Negative Myeloproliferative Neoplasms.

Background: Inflammation might play a critical role in the pathogenesis and progression of Philadelphia-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (Ph-MPNs) with elevated inflammatory cytokines in peripheral blood (PB). However, the inflammatory status inside the bone marrow (BM), which is the place of malignancy origin and important microenvironment of neoplasm evolution, has not yet been elucidated. Methods: Inflammatory cytokine profiles in PB and BM of 24 Ph-MPNs patients were measured by a multiplex quantitative inflammation array. Cytokines that correlated between PB and BM were selected and

Uterine Tumor Resembling Ovarian Sex Cord Stromal Tumor (UTROSCT): A Series of 3 Cases With Extensive Rhabdoid Differentiation, Malignant Behavior, and ESR1-NCOA2 Fusions.

ESR1 and GREB1 fusions have recently been described in uterine tumor resembling ovarian sex cord tumor (UTROSCT). Thus far, recurrences have been documented in a subset of those harboring GREB1 fusions, but not in those with ESR1 rearrangements. Here we describe the clinicopathologic features of 3 recurrent UTROSCTs with striking rhabdoid morphology (an unusual feature of these tumors overall) and ESR1-NCOA2 fusions. The patients were 32, 37, and 54 years at initial diagnosis and first recurrence occurred at 7, 9, and 32 years. The primary tumors (available in two cases) were centered in the m

The incidence of mTOR marker in tracheal adenoid cystic carcinoma by immunohistochemical staining.

INTRODUCTION: There is an association between the activation of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling and aggressive tumor growth in multiple forms of cancer, including adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC). ACCs are uncommon yet a malignant form of neoplasms that arises within the secretory glands. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the increase of mTOR in the ACC tumors in order to survey the possibility of treating these tumors with mTOR inhibitors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Samples from known cases of the lung and tracheal ACC were retrievedfrom the archives of the pa-tholog

Usefulness of 18F-Fluorocholine Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography in Locating Lesions in Hyperparathyroidism: A Systematic Review.

IMPORTANCE: Identifying parathyroid glands correctly before a surgical procedure is essential to perform minimally invasive surgery. First-line tests with discordant or negative results underscore the need for more accurate imaging tests, thus decreasing the requirement for bilateral neck exploration or reintervention. OBJECTIVE: To review the available evidence to determine positive predictive value, negative predictive value, sensitivity, and specificity in clinical cases in which 18F-fluorocholine positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET/CT) could be useful as a method to loca

Surgical Parapharyngeal Space Tumor Analysis with Case Series Study.

BACKGROUND: The parapharyngeal space is a hypothetical region in the neck that stretches from the base of the skull to the bigger corner of the hyoid bone. The fascia that connects the styloid process to the tensor veli palatini separates the compartment into prestyloid and poststyloid compartments, with the prestyloid compartment being larger. In the general population, tumors of the parapharyngeal area are very uncommon, accounting for less than 1% of all head and neck neoplasms in the population. In this location, CT scanning and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams are complimentary, and

Surgical management of pancreatic neuroendocrine liver metastases.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNET) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms that vary in their clinical presentation, behavior and prognosis. The most common site of metastasis is the liver. Surgical resection of neuroendocrine liver metastases (NELM) is thought to afford the best long-term outcomes when feasible. Initial preoperative workup should include surveillance for carcinoid syndrome, screening for evidence of liver insufficiency, and performance of imaging specific to neuroendocrine tumors such as a somatostatin receptor positron emission tomography scan. Standard surgical principl

Platelets as Mediators of Thromboinflammation in Chronic Myeloproliferative Neoplasms.

Chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are stem cell disorders driven by mutations in JAK2, CALR, or MPL genes and characterized by myeloid proliferation and increased blood cell counts. They encompass three closely related conditions, including essential thrombocythemia, polycythemia vera, and primary myelofibrosis. Elevated levels of cytokines released by clonal and non-clonal cells generate a chronic proinflammatory state that contributes to disease pathogenesis. Thrombosis represents the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in MPN, although paradoxically, patients may also pres

Association of Multiple Melanocytic Naevi with Education, Sex and Skin Type. A Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 Study with 46 Years Follow-up.

Having multiple melanocytic naevi (< 50 naevi) is one of the strongest risk factors for melanoma. However, the epidemiology in adults is unclear. This comprehensive dermatological status investigation of 1,932 birth-cohort study cases aged 46 years analysed the prevalence of multiple melanocytic naevi and their association with sex, socioeconomic status (education) in childhood and adulthood, skin type and sunbathing habits. The prevalence of multiple melanocytic naevi was 11.6% (223/1,930). Higher education (odds ratio (OR) 2.11, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.51-2.96), male sex (OR 1.48,

Diagnosis and management of multiple paragangliomas of the head and neck.

Paragangliomas (PGs) are slowly growing, usually benign neoplasms. The aim of the study was to analyze the incidence, diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with multiple paragangliomas of the head and neck. A retrospective review of the records of 84 patients with head and neck PGs, diagnosed and treated in our institution was performed for the years 1983-2013 to identify patients with multiple tumors. Fourteen (16.6 %) patients developed multiple PGs, synchronous or metachronous, within 4-21 years of follow-up. Clinical data of these patients were reviewed to evaluate the diagnosi

Giant frontal colliding meningiomas in a child: histopathologic, cytogenetic, and ultrastructural descriptions of a unique case.

Meningiomas in the pediatric population are uncommon primary brain tumors, and rhabdoid meningiomas are exceedingly rare. We describe herein a 16-year-old female who presented with a giant frontal mass with intracranial and extracranial components. Histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural examinations showed the intracranial tumor to be rhabdoid meningioma, and the extracranial tumor was meningothelial meningioma. Cytogenetic study of the intracranial tumor showed monosomy 22, and the extracranial tumor showed allelic losses at 18p11.32. Because of the different cytogenetic finding

Germinal mutations of RET, SDHB, SDHD, and VHL genes in patients with apparently sporadic pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas.

INTRODUCTION: Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas are derived from neural crest cells and are localized mainly in adrenal medulla and sympathetic or parasympathetic ganglia. They can be inherited (25%) and be part of multi-endocrine syndromes such as MEN2 syndrome, von Hippel-Lindau syndrome, pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma syndrome, neurofibromatosis type 1, and Sturge-Weber syndrome. Clinical presentation can sometimes be atypical and does not always allow proper diagnosis. In such situations, DNA analysis can be helpful, especially when the pheochromocytoma is the first and only symptom. M

[Three cases of malignant lymphoma accompanied by renal cell carcinoma].

Three cases of malignant lymphoma (ML) accompanied by renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are reported. From September 1997 through August 2000, we treated 85 patients with ML. Among these patients, three had accompanying RCC (clear cell type): case 1, a 57-yr-old man with gamma/delta-T cell lymphoma; case 2, a 25-yr-old man with Grade 3 follicular lymphoma; case 3, a 64-yr-old man with MALToma of the right orbit. Renal cell carcinoma is a relatively rare disease, but several reports have indicated that, for some reason, the incidence of concurrent RCC and ML is higher than expected. It is possible tha
