Development and validation of a recombinant N protein-based indirect ELISA for serological detection of feline infectious peritonitis virus.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a fatal disorder driven by the feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV), has no clinically approved vaccine available to date-rendering prevention and early-stage diagnosis critical to its control. In this study, a feline infection model was developed via intraperitoneal inoculation of virus-laden ascitic fluid, with infection validation conducted using clinical observation, hematological testing, biochemical profiling, imaging examinations, histopathological analysis, and immunofluorescence assay. The viral nucleocapsid N gene underwent cloning and heter

Comparative Genome Sequencing Analysis of Some Novel Feline Infectious Peritonitis Viruses Isolated from Some Feral Cats in Long Island.

Feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) remains as one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in young cats from shelters and catteries worldwide. Since little is known about the molecular characteristics of currently circulating FIPV strains in Long Island, New York, samples from two shelter cats submitted to the Pathology Diagnostic Services of the Long Island University College of Veterinary Medicine, with gross and microscopic lesions consistent with those of FIP were processed for virus isolation, molecular characterization and full-length genome decoding. The younger shelter

Analysis of risk factors, clinical data, treatment outcomes for cats with feline infectious peritonitis using GS-441524 (2020-2024).

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a lethal, immune-mediated disease caused by feline coronavirus (FCoV). FIP was considered untreatable; however, GS-441524, a nucleoside analog, has become a hopeful antiviral treatment. Despite its effectiveness, survival outcomes depend on several prognostic factors, especially the type of disease and clinical presentation. This research aimed to assess the effectiveness of GS-441524 in a large population of cats with FIP in Iran, examine survival rates, and identify crucial prognostic factors affecting treatment outcomes. Additionally, it evaluates alte

Perforated Jejunal Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor in a Young Male Patient With Acute Peritonitis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, typically diagnosed in older adults. Jejunal GISTs with spontaneous perforation leading to acute peritonitis are uncommon, particularly in young individuals. We report the case of a 32-year-old male who presented with acute abdominal pain, vomiting, and peritoneal signs. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed pneumoperitoneum and a heterogeneously enhancing mass at the jejunoileal junction, raising suspicion for a perforated GIST. Emergency exploratory laparotomy confirmed a

GENETIC ABLATION OF THE C-TYPE LECTIN RECEPTOR CLEC2D INCREASES PERITONITIS MORTALITY, INFLAMMATION, AND PHYSIOLOGY WITHOUT DIMINISHING ORGAN INJURY.

Background: Sepsis accounts for substantial morbidity and mortality motivating investigators to continue the search for pathways and molecules driving the pathogenesis of the disease. The current study examined if the novel C-type lectin receptor (CLR), Clec2d, plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of sepsis. Methods: Clec2d knockout (KO) mice were fully backcrossed onto the C57/BL6 background. Acute endotoxemia was induced with an intraperitoneal injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Sepsis was induced in two different models, cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) and Pseudomonas aerugino

Determination of ertapenem in plasma and ascitic fluid by UHPLC-MS/MS in cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis.

OBJECTIVES: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis is a frequent severe complication in cirrhotic patients with ascites. Carbapenem antibiotics are currently the treatment of choice for patients with hospital-acquired or healthcare-related infections. However, there is limited evidence available on the efficacy of ertapenem in cirrhotic patients with spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. As a result, the pharmacokynetics and pharmacodynamics of this antibiotic are still unknown. The objective of this study was to develop and validate measurement procedures based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass sp

Acute Peritonitis Is Not Always a Surgical Fix: A Rare Case of Mixed Connective Tissue Disease Presenting as Polyserositis.

Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) is a complex rheumatologic condition whose diagnosis often presents a challenge to even specialists in the field. Many cases are therefore underrecognized or misdiagnosed due to the heterogeneity of the presentation and manifestations. This report highlights the intricacies of diagnosing a case of MCTD when the presenting symptom is atypical. Herein, we present a case of a young girl who had severe abdominal pain, initially concerning for acute peritonitis from cholecystitis, and was found to have polyserositis affecting the pleural space, pericardium, pe

Three-dimensional computed tomography reconstruction diagnosed digestive tract perforation and acute peritonitis caused by Monopterus albus: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Few reports have described living foreign bodies in the human body. The current manuscript demonstrates that computed tomography (CT) is an effective tool for accurate preoperative evaluation of living foreign bodies in clinic. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction technology could clearly display anatomical structures, lesions and adjacent organs, improving diagnostic accuracy and guiding the surgical decision-making process. CASE SUMMARY: Herein we describe a 68-year-old man diagnosed with digestive tract perforation and acute peritonitis caused by a foreign body of Monopter

Spontaneous perforation of the common bile duct in adults presenting as biliary peritonitis: a case report and literature review.

UNLABELLED: Spontaneous perforation of the common bile duct (SPCBD) is an exceptional disease, especially in adults. The cause is often idiopathic once trauma and choledochal cyst are excluded. Early diagnosis is often difficult because of its often-misleading appearance. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report the case of a 54-year-old man, a known case of type 2 diabetes mellitus, who presented to our emergency department for acute abdominal pain that had evolved for 2 days. CLINICAL FINDINGS AND INVESTIGATIONS: On physical examination, the patient had a fever of up to 38.5°C, and the abdome

A Frog-Derived Cathelicidin Peptide with Dual Antimicrobial and Immunomodulatory Activities Effectively Ameliorates Staphylococcus aureus-Induced Peritonitis in Mice.

As antimicrobial resistance poses an increasing threat to public health, it is urgent to develop new antimicrobial agents. In this paper, we identify a novel 30-residue peptide (Nv-CATH, NCNFLCKVKQRLRSVSSTSHIGMAIPRPRG) from the skin of the frog Nanorana ventripunctata, which belongs to the cathelicidin family. Nv-CATH exhibited broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Nv-CATH significantly protected mice from lethal infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Furthermore, the peptide suppressed excessive and harmful inflammatory responses by repre

Pancreatic stone protein as a biomarker for the early diagnosis of post-operative peritonitis, intra-abdominal infection and sepsis.

The diagnosis of intra-abdominal infection and post-operative peritonitis based on clinical examination, biomarkers and radiological signs, should be made as early as possible to improve outcomes and decrease mortality through early and optimal source control, adequate surgery and appropriate antibiotic therapy (Montravers et al. Therapeutic management of peritonitis: a comprehensive guide for intensivists. Intensive Care Med 2016;42:1234-47). However, the indication and the timing of the surgery is often not an easy decision. This case presents the use of a novel early biomarker of infection

Establishment and Validation of a Non-Invasive Diagnostic Nomogram to Identify Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis in Patients With Decompensated Cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a common and life-threatening infection in patients with decompensated cirrhosis (DC), and it is accompanied with high mortality and morbidity. However, early diagnosis of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is not possible because of the lack of typical symptoms or the low patient compliance and positivity rate of the ascites puncture test. We aimed to establish and validate a non-invasive diagnostic nomogram to identify SBP in patients with DC. METHOD: Data were collected from 4,607 patients with DC from July 2015 to December 2019 i
