Automatic Assessment of Pectus Excavatum Severity From CT Images Using Deep Learning.

Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most common abnormality of the thoracic cage, whose severity is evaluated by extracting three indices (Haller, correction and asymmetry) from computed tomography (CT) images. To date, this analysis is performed manually, which is tedious and prone to variability. In this paper, a fully automatic framework for PE severity quantification from CT images is proposed, comprising three steps: (1) identification of the sternum's greatest depression point; (2) detection of 8 anatomical keypoints relevant for severity assessment; and (3) measurements' geometric regularizati

Low interobserver and intraobserver reliability using the Matta radiographic system for intraoperative assessment of reduction following acetabular ORIF.

INTRODUCTION: The system described by Matta for rating acetabular fracture quality of reduction following ORIF has been used extensively throughout the literature. However, the reliability of this system remains to be validated. We sought to determine the interobserver and intraobserver reliability of this system when used by fellowship-trained pelvic and acetabular surgeons to evaluate intraoperative fluoroscopy. METHODS: This is a retrospective evaluation of a prospectively collected acetabular fracture database at an academic level I trauma center. The quality of reduction of all acetabula

A comparison of agreement between actigraphy and polysomnography for assessing sleep during posttraumatic amnesia.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep disturbance often emerges in the early recovery phase following a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury, known as posttraumatic amnesia. Actigraphy is commonly employed to assess sleep, as it is assumed that patients in posttraumatic amnesia (who display confusion, restlessness, and agitation) would better tolerate this measure over gold-standard polysomnography (PSG). This study evaluated the agreement between PSG and actigraphy for determining (sleep/wake time, sleep efficiency, sleep latency, and awakenings) in patients experiencing posttraumatic amnesia. It also

A Novel Fluoroscopic View for Improved Assessment of the Safety of the Posterosuperior Screw in Femoral Neck Fracture Fixation.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to determine specific fluoroscopic views of the femoral neck to accurately identify partially extraosseous ("in-out-in"; IOI) placement of the posterosuperior screw for fixation of femoral neck fractures. METHODS: A 3.2-mm guide pin was placed in the posterosuperior aspect of 2 synthetic femur models: 1 entirely intraosseous and 1 IOI. Sequential fluoroscopic images were made at 5° intervals in order to identify which fluoroscopic projections identified IOI guide pin placement. These images were utilized to inform screw placement and assessment

Comparing diagnosis of midfacial fractures by radiologists and plastic surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Clinicians who manage facial fractures often rely on radiologist interpretations to help with assessment and management. Among treating physicians, facial fractures are categorized into clinically relevant patterns of injury. On the other hand, while radiologists are unsurpassed at identifying individual breaks in the bone, larger fracture patterns are not always conveyed in radiology reports. PURPOSE: This study aims to assess the frequency with which the terminology describing midfacial fracture patterns is concordant among radiologists and treating clinicians. METHODS: The aut

Systematic Isolation of Key Parameters for Estimating Skeletal Maturity on Anteroposterior Wrist Radiographs.

BACKGROUND: The ability to make a continuous skeletal maturity estimate from a wrist radiograph would be useful in the treatment of adolescent forearm fractures, scoliosis, and other conditions. We attempted to create a reliable, rapid, and accurate method to do this. METHODS: Many anteroposterior wrist radiographic parameters from 3 skeletal maturity systems were simplified to 23 based on relevance to the peripubertal age range, univariate correlation with skeletal maturity, and reliability. These 23 parameters were evaluated on serial peripubertal anteroposterior hand-wrist radiographs. We

Personalized loading conditions for homogenized finite element analysis of the distal sections of the radius.

The microstructure of trabecular bone is known to adapt its morphology in response to mechanical loads for achieving a biomechanical homeostasis. Based on this form-function relationship, previous investigators either simulated the remodeling of bone to predict the resulting density and architecture for a specific loading or retraced physiological loading conditions from local density and architecture. The latter inverse approach includes quantifying bone morphology using computed tomography and calculating the relative importance of selected load cases by minimizing the fluctuation of a tissu

Pharmacotherapy alleviates pathological changes in human direct reprogrammed neuronal cell model of myotonic dystrophy type 1.

Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is a trinucleotide repeat disorder affecting multiple organs. However, most of the research is focused on studying and treating its muscular symptoms. On the other hand, despite the significant impact of the neurological symptoms on patients' quality of life, no drug therapy was studied due to insufficient reproducibility in DM1 brain-specific animal models. To establish DM1 neuronal model, human skin fibroblasts were directly converted into neurons by using lentivirus expressing small hairpin RNA (shRNA) against poly-pyrimidine tract binding protein (PTBP). We

Novel artificial intelligence algorithm: an accurate and independent measure of spinopelvic parameters.

OBJECTIVE: The analysis of sagittal alignment by measuring spinopelvic parameters has been widely adopted among spine surgeons globally, and sagittal imbalance is a well-documented cause of poor quality of life. These measurements are time-consuming but necessary to make, which creates a growing need for an automated analysis tool that measures spinopelvic parameters with speed, precision, and reproducibility without relying on user input. This study introduces and evaluates an algorithm based on artificial intelligence (AI) that fully automatically measures spinopelvic parameters. METHODS: T
