Management of Pediatric Migraine Headache in the Emergency Room and Infusion Center.

Migraine is a common disorder that starts at an early age and takes a variable pattern from intermittent to chronic headache with several exacerbations throughout a lifetime. Children and adolescents are significantly affected. If an acute headache is not aborted by outpatient migraine therapy, it often causes severe disability, preventing the child from attending school and social events. Treating the acute severe headache aggressively helps prevent prolonged disability as well as possible chronification. Multiple medications are available, mostly for the outpatient management of an attack an

Molecular and cytogenetic investigations of the fragile X region including the Frax A and Frax E CGG trinucleotide repeat sequences in families multiplex for autism and related phenotypes.

We undertook molecular and cytogenetic analyses in 25 families multiplex for autism and related disorders. Three of the multiplex families exhibited fragile X, and the affected offspring all exhibited CGG triplet repeat insertion mutations in the FMR-1 gene. One of these families contained an affected pair of monozygotic female twins. Both had similar-sized CGG triplet repeat expansions, but different phenotypic manifestations. One suffered from autism and the other from mild mental retardation and marked social anxiety. PCR and Southern hybridization analysis of the CGG repeat sequences chara

Neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage and pancreatic cancer among veterans.

Individual-level social determinants of health are associated with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma; however, it is currently unknown whether neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage is related to the risk of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma diagnosis. Area deprivation index is a validated tool to measure neighborhood-level disadvantage. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of 5 069 429 patients in the Veterans Health Administration between October 1, 2001, and December 31, 2021. Area deprivation index percentiles were grouped using national area deprivation index decile cutoffs. In

Relating ADHD to the aperiodic component of the EEG signal in both males and females across development.

The aperiodic EEG signal has been shown to differ in those with versus without Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). However, the underrepresentation of females and relatively narrow age-ranges investigated, made it difficult to characterise the interaction of age, sex and ADHD on aperiodic activity. This is important, because the aperiodic exponent has been put forward as a promising biomarker of ADHD, despite generalizability limitations. This registered report draws upon the Healthy Brains Biobank to analyze resting EEG data of children ages 5-18 years. We compared the aperiodic

Developmental Pathways to Adult Mental Health in Adolescent Parents: Childhood and Early Adolescent Antecedents.

This study examined three questions: 1) what are the childhood predictors of becoming a teenage parent (versus a first-time parent as a young adult); 2) does becoming a parent in the teen years carry higher risk of young-adult internalizing and externalizing problems than becoming a first-time parent as a young adult; and 3) does the relation between childhood factors and adult mental health differ between teen parents and adult parents. We combined data from two U.S. samples that were followed from age 6 through age 35. Family socioeconomic status, one's parent's marital status, parenting beh

Social Health Programming During Adolescence Is Associated with Increased Serum Levels of Carotenoids, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E in Young Women: An Observational Cohort Study.

Over 85% of young women in the United States do not meet fruit and vegetable intake recommendations, placing them at risk for low antioxidant nutrient intake. Social health programming (SHP) can improve dietary intake of fruits and vegetables, but it is not known how SHP impacts serum levels of specific antioxidant nutrients. This observational cohort study assessed the effect of participation in SHP through Girls Inc., Omaha, on serum carotenoid, retinol, and tocopherol levels for 12-29-year-old women. Serum nutrient levels were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography and nutrie

Factors Associated with Chronic Low Back Pain in Hungary Based on the European Health Interview Surveys Conducted in 2009, 2014, and 2019: A Repeated Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction: Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability worldwide, with substantial variation in prevalence across regions. It is associated with a wide range of biophysical, psychological, social, and lifestyle factors, as well as comorbid conditions. Given its high impact, identifying population-level correlations of LBP is essential for informing prevention strategies. This study aimed to assess demographic, socioeconomic, lifestyle, and health-related factors associated with LBP in Hungary. Methods: A repeated cross-sectional analysis was conducted using secondary data from th

From health to AIDS: exploring the quality of life among men who have sex with men along the HIV spectrum in a mid-sized city in Indonesia.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is an important indicator for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA). However, data on HRQoL among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Indonesia remains limited. This study aimed to measure HRQoL among MSM individuals based on their status. This cross-sectional study involved 152 MSM participants. We measured HRQoL using the EQ-5D-5L instrument and compared utility scores among HIV-negative, HIV-positive, and AIDS groups. Results showed a significant and substantial decline in HRQoL with the progression of HIV status, with the AIDS group having the lowest util

Can the household clean energy transition ameliorate health inequality? Evidence from China.

China is actively encouraging households to replace traditional solid fuels with clean energy. Based on the Chinese Families Panel Survey (CFPS) data, this paper uses propensity scores matching with the difference-in-differences model to examine the impact of clean energy in the household sector on residents' health status, and whether such an energy transition promotes health equity by favoring relatively disadvantaged social groups. The results show that: (1) The use of cleaner cooking fuels can significantly improve residents' health status; (2) The older adult and women have higher health

Invited Commentary: The Need for Repeated Measures and Other Methodological Considerations When Investigating Discrimination as a Contributor to Health.

To determine potential measurement error related to the assessment of lifetime discrimination, Van Dyke et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2022;191(3):370-378) investigated inconsistencies in reporting of racial, socioeconomic status, and sex discrimination over time among Black and White adults enrolled in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study. The authors found that "ever" reports of discrimination (as assessed by the Experiences of Discrimination Scale) decreased over time and that populations who most experience discrimination (i.e., Black/African-American people, younge
