Akimba Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy Model: Understanding Molecular Mechanism and Drug Screening for the Progression of Diabetic Retinopathy.

As the prevalence of diabetes has reached epidemic proportions worldwide, diabetic retinopathy incidence is increasing rapidly. An advanced diabetic retinopathy (DR) stage can lead to a sight-threatening form. There is growing evidence showing diabetes causes a range of metabolic changes that subsequently lead to pathological modifications in the retina and retinal blood vessels. To understand the complex mechanism of the pathophysiology of DR, a precise model is not readily available. By crossbreeding the Akita and Kimba strains, a suitable proliferative DR model was acquired. This new Akimba

Line-scanning SD-OCT for in-vivo, non-contact, volumetric, cellular resolution imaging of the human cornea and limbus.

In-vivo, non-contact, volumetric imaging of the cellular and sub-cellular structure of the human cornea and limbus with optical coherence tomography (OCT) is challenging due to involuntary eye motion that introduces both motion artifacts and blur in the OCT images. Here we present the design of a line-scanning (LS) spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomography system that combines 2 × 3 × 1.7 µm (x, y, z) resolution in biological tissue with an image acquisition rate of ∼2,500 fps, and demonstrate its ability to image in-vivo and without contact with the tissue surface, the cellular struct

Differences between Mycobacterium chimaera and tuberculosis Using Ocular Multimodal Imaging: A Systematic Review.

Due to their non-specific diagnostic patterns of ocular infection, differential diagnosis between Mycobacterium (M.) chimaera and tuberculosis can be challenging. In both disorders, ocular manifestation can be the first sign of a systemic infection, and a delayed diagnosis might reduce the response to treatment leading to negative outcomes. Thus, it becomes imperative to distinguish chorioretinal lesions associated with M. chimaera, from lesions due to M. tuberculosis and other infectious disorders. To date, multimodal non-invasive imaging modalities that include ultra-wide field fundus photog

Concurrent vitrectomy for persistent pupillary membrane complicated by severe myopia and vitreomacular traction syndrome: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: In cases of persistent pupillary membrane (PPM), the eye is usually slightly microphthalmic and emmetropia or hyperopia is often present, yet severe myopia is reportedly rare. Here we presented a case of PPM complicated by vitreomacular traction syndrome and posterior staphyloma due to severe myopia. PATIENT CONCERNS: This study involved a 63-year-old female patient who had been diagnosed with bilateral PPM at a local eye clinic and who was subsequently referred to our department for a more detailed examination due to a recent decrease of visual acuity. DIAGNOSES: Slit-lamp mic
