Investigation of Architectures for Models of Neural Responses to Electrical Brain Stimulation.

Electrical brain stimulation is used clinically to target pathological regions of the brain for treatment of diseases, such as Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and depression. Conventional treatments involve chronic implants that disrupt activity through a fixed periodic train of pulses or bursts of pulses applied to the affected region. However, stimulating one region of the brain necessarily affects other structurally and/or functionally connected areas. Understanding how connected regions of the brain are affected by stimulation at the implant site could improve treatment efficacy by informing

Shift in lateralization during illusory self-motion: EEG responses to visual flicker at 10 Hz and frequency-specific modulation by tACS.

Self-motion perception is a key aspect of higher vestibular processing, suggested to rely upon hemispheric lateralization and alpha-band oscillations. The first aim of this study was to test for any lateralization in the EEG alpha band during the illusory sense of self-movement (vection) induced by large optic flow stimuli. Visual stimuli flickered at alpha frequency (approx. 10 Hz) in order to produce steady state visually evoked potentials (SSVEPs), a robust EEG measure which allows probing the frequency-specific response of the cortex. The first main result was that differential lateralizat…

Do oral contraceptives modulate an ERP response to affective pictures?

Indications exist that use of oral contraceptives affects women's socio-emotional behaviour, brain function and, cognitive abilities, but the information is still scarce and ambiguous. We aimed to examine affective processing of visual stimuli between oral contraceptive users (OC, n = 33) and naturally cycling women (NC, n = 37) using the event-related potential (ERP) method. The main findings are: (i) emotionally arousing stimuli elicited significantly enlarged late positive potential (LPP) amplitudes compared to neutral stimuli, (ii) anti-androgenic OC users demonstrated diminished brain rea

Emotion regulation in social anxiety: a systematic investigation and meta-analysis using self-report, subjective, and event-related potentials measures.

Recent models of social anxiety disorder emphasise the role of emotion dysregulation; however, the nature of the proposed impairment needs clarification. In a replication and extension framework, four studies (N = 193) examined whether individuals with social anxiety (HSAs) are impaired in using cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. Self-reports and lab-based tasks of suppression and reappraisal were utilised among individuals with high and low levels of social anxiety. A meta-analysis of these studies indicated that, compared to controls, HSAs reported less frequent and effective

Enhanced N170 elicited by words in Chinese developmental dyslexia.

Impaired print tuning in dyslexia has been shown in alphabetic languages; whether we can observe the same in a nonalphabetic language such as Chinese is still questionable. The present study investigated the N170 component in response to Chinese words versus nonword pseudo-words in 10-year-old children with developmental dyslexia (DD) when they were asked to performed a lexical decision task. The N170 was enhanced for DD group than control group, regardless of Chinese words or pseudo-words. The group effect of N170 amplitudes was more robust for Chinese words over pseudo-words. Although the N1

Differences in dyslexic students before and after a remediation program: A clinical neuropsychological and event related potential study.

Developmental dyslexia is defined as an unexpected specific and persistent failure to acquire efficient reading skills despite conventional instruction, adequate intelligence and sociocultural opportunity. This article reports the outcomes of a study that evaluated the implementation of a 4-month intervention program. The intervention consisted of structured activities aiming at improving (a) the children's phonological awareness, (b) their visual and auditory memory, (c) their visual discrimination ability, and (d) their text comprehension. Participants were 12 children diagnosed as dyslexic

Test-Retest Reliability of the Binaural Interaction Component of the Auditory Brainstem Response.

OBJECTIVES: The binaural interaction component (BIC) is the residual auditory brainstem response (ABR) obtained after subtracting the sum of monaurally evoked from binaurally evoked ABRs. The DN1 peak-the first negative peak of the BIC-has been postulated to have diagnostic value as a biomarker for binaural hearing abilities. Indeed, not only do DN1 amplitudes depend systematically upon binaural cues to location (interaural time and level differences), but they are also predictive of central hearing deficits in humans. A prominent issue in using BIC measures as a diagnostic biomarker is that D

Repetition effects in human ERPs to faces.

In the present paper, we review research conducted over the past 25 years addressing the effects of repeating various kinds of information in faces (e.g., pictorial, spatial configural, identity, semantic) on different components in human event-related brain potentials (ERPs). This body of evidence suggests that several ERP components are systematically linked to different functional components of face identity processing. Specifically, we argue (1) that repetition of the category of faces (categorical adaptation) strongly affects the occipitotemporal N170 amplitude, which is systematically su

Gamma oscillations as a neural signature of shifting times in narrative language.

Verbs and other temporal expressions allow speakers to specify the location of events in time, as well as to move back and forth in time, shifting in a narrative between past, present and future. The referential flexibility of temporal expressions is well understood in linguistics but its neurocognitive bases remain unknown. We aimed at obtaining a neural signature of shifting times in narrative language. We recorded and analyzed event-related brain potentials (ERPs) and oscillatory responses to the adverb 'now' and to the second main verb in Punctual ('An hour ago the boy stole a candy and no

Cortical activity evoked by inoculation needle prick in infants up to one-year old.

Inoculation is one of the first and most common experiences of procedural pain in infancy. However, little is known about how needle puncture pain is processed by the central nervous system in children. In this study, we describe for the first time the event-related activity in the infant brain during routine inoculation using electroencephalography. Fifteen healthy term-born infants aged 1 to 2 months (n = 12) or 12 months (n = 5) were studied in an outpatient clinic. Pain behavior was scored using the Modified Behavioral Pain Scale. A distinct inoculation event-related vertex potential, cons

Lexical and sublexical orthographic processing: an ERP study with skilled and dyslexic adult readers.

This ERP study investigated the cognitive nature of the P1-N1 components during orthographic processing. We used an implicit reading task with various types of stimuli involving different amounts of sublexical or lexical orthographic processing (words, pseudohomophones, pseudowords, nonwords, and symbols), and tested average and dyslexic readers. An orthographic regularity effect (pseudowords-nonwords contrast) was observed in the average but not in the dyslexic group. This suggests an early sensitivity to the dependencies among letters in word-forms that reflect orthographic structure, while

The absence of later wave components in auditory brainstem responses as an initial manifestation of type 2 Gaucher disease.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 Gaucher disease is the most severe neuronopathic form of Gaucher disease and is characterized by severe neurodegeneration with brainstem involvement and organ failure. Prediction or diagnosis of type 2 Gaucher disease before the development of neurological complications is difficult. PATIENT: A 5-month-old female infant presented with deafness without other neurological abnormalities. Auditory brainstem response analysis revealed the absence of later wave components. Two months later, muscular rigidity became evident, followed by the development of opisthotonus and strabism

[Assessment of levels of otoacoustic emission response in neonates with perinatal asphyxia].

OBJECTIVE:: To evaluate the effects of perinatal asphyxia on the level of the response to transient otoacoustic emissions in infants. METHODS:: Otoacoustic emissions in 154 neonates were performed: 54 infants who suffered asphyxia at birth, measured by Apgar score and medical diagnosis, and 100 infants without risk were compared. Scores less than 4 in the first minute and/or less than 6 in the fifth minute were considered as "low Apgar". Statistical analysis of the data was performed using the Kruskal, Wilcoxon, and Mann-Whitney nonparametric tests. RESULTS:: Lower levels of response were ob

The periglomerular cell of the olfactory bulb and its role in controlling mitral cell spiking: a computational model.

Interneurons in the olfactory bulb are key elements of odor processing but their roles have not yet being fully understood. Two types of inhibitory interneurons, periglomerular and granule cells, act at two different levels within the olfactory bulb and may have different roles in coordinating the spiking of mitral cells, which are the principal output neurons of the olfactory bulb. In this work we introduce a reduced compartmental model of the periglomerular cell and use it to investigate its role on mitral cell spiking in a model of an elementary cell triad composed of these two cell types p
