Dimensions of the anterior cruciate ligament and thickness of the distal femoral growth plate in children: a MRI-based study.

BACKGROUND: When determining the dimensions of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) graft in children, bone age should be considered in addition to the patient's age, gender, and body height. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to determine the relationship between age, gender, and ACL dimensions as well as thickness of growth plate cartilage of the distal femur during puberty. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed MRI scans of the knee in 131 children (82 girls, 49 boys) aged 6-18 years (mean age: 14.9 ± 2.6 years). ACL length and width as well as thickness of the growth plate cartilage at the distal femora

Opposite Effect of Cyclic Loading on the Material Properties of Medial Collateral Ligament at Different Temperatures: An Animal Study.

In traffic accidents, the medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury of the knee joint of pedestrians is common. Biofidelic material is important to realize MCL's native biomechanics in simulations to clarify the injury mechanisms of pedestrians. Pedestrians' MCLs usually experience cyclic loading at the intra-articular temperature of the knee joint before accidents. Temperature influences the material behaviors of ligaments. However, the mechanical properties of ligaments under cyclic loading have been widely evaluated only at room temperature rather than physiological temperature. Therefore, th…

Effect of Different Collagen on Anterior Cruciate Ligament Transection and Medial Meniscectomy-Induced Osteoarthritis Male Rats.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common type of arthritis characterized by degeneration of the articular cartilage and joint dysfunction. Various pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques have been used to manage these diseases. Due to the diverse therapeutic properties of marine collagen, it has received considerable attention in its pharmacological application. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of jellyfish collagen, collagen peptide, other sources of marine collagen, and glycine in treating OA. In the OA rat model, an anterior cruciate ligament transection combine

Evaluation of Health Care Disparities in Patients With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury: Does Race and Insurance Matter?

BACKGROUND: It is unknown whether race- or insurance-based disparities in health care exist regarding baseline knee pain, knee function, complete meniscal tear, or articular cartilage damage in patients who undergo anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR). HYPOTHESIS: Black patients and patients with Medicaid evaluated for ACLR would have worse baseline knee pain, worse knee function, and greater odds of having a complete meniscal tear. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A cohort of patients (N = 1463; 81% White, 14% Black, 5% Other race; median age,

Primary high-grade serous cancer arising from uterosacral ligament endometriosis: two case reports.

Although high-grade serous cancer (HGSC) accounts for >70% of ovarian epithelial cancers, it is rarely associated with endometriosis. No previous study has reported an association between the malignant transformation of uterine ligament endometriosis and HGSC. Here, we reported two cases of Chinese female patients with HGSC arising from endometriosis in the uterosacral ligament. They had a long-term history of endometriosis and dysmenorrhea. Both were diagnosed with HGSC at stage IIB. They underwent operations and six cycles of chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin and have remained dis

A whole genome sequencing approach to anterior cruciate ligament rupture-a twin study in two unrelated families.

Predisposition to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) rupture is multi-factorial, with variation in the genome considered a key intrinsic risk factor. Most implicated loci have been identified from candidate gene-based approach using case-control association settings. Here, we leverage a hypothesis-free whole genome sequencing in two two unrelated families (Family A and B) each with twins with a history of recurrent ACL ruptures acquired playing rugby as their primary sport, aimed to elucidate biologically relevant function-altering variants and genetic modifiers in ACL rupture. Family A monozygo

Biomechanical evaluation of interference screw fixation techniques for distal radioulnar ligament reconstruction: a cadaveric experimental study.

INTRODUCTION: In the reconstruction of distal radioulnar ligaments (DRULs), interference screws can be used for antegrade or retrograde fixation of grafts to the ulna. However, the biomechanics of interference screw fixation are currently unknown. This study aimed to determine the biomechanical effects of these two fixations on the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) in a cadaveric model and to investigate the appropriate initial tension. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 human cadaver upper extremities were used, and the DRULs were reconstructed according to Adams' procedure. First, eight spec…

A Modified Anterior Column Realignment With Partial Anterior Longitudinal Ligament Release in Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective radiological analysis. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the radiological outcome after a modified anterior column realignment (mACR) with partial anterior longitudinal ligament (ALL) release in oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Anterior column realignment (ACR) remains a powerful sagittal correction technique in minimally invasive adult spinal deformity surgery and is often combined with posterior column osteotomy (PCO) to achieve more lordosis. OLIF is ideal for ACR because the anterior-to-psoas corridor typically involves the anterola

Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Repair with Suture Tape Augmentation: A Case Series With Five-Year Follow Up.

INTRODUCTION: The medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) is the main restraining force against lateral patellar displacement in the first 20 degrees of knee flexion and is often disrupted following patellar subluxation or dislocation. MPFL reconstruction is commonly performed to restore patellar stability but requires autograft harvest with associated donor site morbidity. The aim of this study was to assess the five-year outcomes of MPFL repair performed with suture tape augmentation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All patients who underwent isolated MPFL repair for recurrent patellar instability bet

Accelerated rehabilitation program following medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction does not increase risk of recurrent instability.

BACKGROUND: Rehabilitation protocols following medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction were historically restrictive, with patients often immobilized and/or given weightbearing restrictions. However, more recently published protocols have been more aggressive. We compared patient-reported outcomes and recurrent dislocation risk between patients treated with a restrictive rehabilitation program (early post-operative bracing and weightbearing restrictions) and an accelerated rehabilitation protocol (no post-operative bracing or weightbearing restrictions) following MPFL reconstructi
