BACKGROUND: Palmoplantar pustulosis (PPP) is a chronic, inflammatory pustular skin disease of unknown etiology. Genetic predisposition, smoking, focal infections, stress, and autoimmune diseases are implicated in its etiology. In this study, the presence of thyroid disease, diabetes mellitus (DM), and dyslipidemia in PPP was investigated based on comorbidities in psoriasis.
METHODS: The records of 51 patients who were diagnosed with PPP both clinically and histopathologically and presented to the dermatology clinic were examined retrospectively. In these patients, fasting blood sugar, HbA1C,

PURPOSE: Autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) is associated with adverse health outcomes, yet routine thyroid autoantibody testing may not always be practical in general screening settings. The pan-immune-inflammation value (PIV), derived from complete blood counts, represents a simple, low-cost marker of systemic inflammation. This study investigated the association between PIV and thyroid autoantibody positivity in a health examination cohort.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 5,785 Chinese adults undergoing routine health examinations at the First Hospital of China Medical Universi

Hypothyroidism means an underactive thyroid gland. This leads to a decrease in the functioning of the thyroid gland. It is a very common endocrine disorder that causes under-secretion of thyroid hormones, mainly thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). It affects people of every age group but is more commonly found in women and older people. The symptoms of hypothyroidism can go unnoticed, may not be specific, and may overlap with other conditions, which makes it harder to diagnose it in some cases. Common symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, increased sensitivity to cold (cold intolerance)

BACKGROUND: Graves' is disease an autoimmune disorder of the thyroid gland caused by circulating anti-thyroid receptor antibodies (TRAb) in the serum. TRAb mimics the action of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and stimulates the thyroid hormone receptor (TSHR), which results in hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) and goiter. Methimazole (MMI) is used for hyperthyroidism treatment for patients with Graves' disease.
METHODS: We have developed a model using a system of ordinary differential equations for hyperthyroidism treatment with MMI. The model has four state variables, namely conce

CONTEXT: Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) stimulates thyroid function during pregnancy. We recently showed that thyroid autoimmunity severely attenuated the thyroidal response to hCG stimulation and that this may underlie the higher risk of premature delivery in thyroperoxidase antibody (TPOAb)-positive women. We hypothesized that a lower thyroidal response to hCG stimulation in TPOAb-negative women is also associated with a higher risk of premature delivery and preterm premature rupture of membranes (pPROM).
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4), and hC

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) comprising Hashimoto's thyroiditis, primary myxedema, and Graves' disease are associated with autoantibodies directed against thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO). Anti-TPO occur in 10% of pregnant women, half of whom reportedly develop postpartum thyroid dysfunction. We recently published data on the thyroid function reference ranges in pregnant Chinese but the AITD status of our cohort was unknown. In view of this missing information we have measured anti-TPO in specimens from our cohort stored at -80 degrees C, and compared these to those of pat

Rapidly progressive dementia (RPD) is caused by a heterogeneous group of neurological disorders, and the prototype is Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). However, treatable causes including autoimmune encephalitis are often underrecognized and undertreated. A 72-year-old female patient was admitted with a 10-month history of rapidly progressive cognitive decline, visual hallucinations, paranoid behavior, diarrhea, and an 18-kg unintentional weight loss. On the physical exam, she was only oriented to the person and demonstrated an exaggerated startle response with diffuse rigidity. The initial cli

INTRODUCTION: Although type 1 diabetes mellitus is largely associated with autoimmune thyroid disease and this entity has been recently referred to as autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 3 variant, the autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 3 variant in patients with rheumatoid arthritis has not been reported so far. We herein describe the first case of rheumatoid arthritis that was associated with autoimmune polyglandular syndrome type 3 variant.
CASE REPORT: A 77-year-old woman with a 15-year history of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and a 10-year history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) pre

AIM: Autistic regression is a unique variant within the autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), with recent reports raising the possibility of immune aetiology. This study explores clinical clues for an association between autistic regression and autoimmunity.
METHOD: Single-centre charts of children diagnosed with ASD in 2014 were reviewed. We compared the rates of: (1) familial autoimmunity in first-degree and second-degree relatives; (2) febrile illness preceding initial parental concern, as a potential precipitant of immune activation; and (3) possible non-immune precipitants such as pregnancy

Abstract Coeliac disease (CD, sometimes called gluten-sensitive enteropathy or nontropical sprue) is an inflammatory disorder of the small intestine of autoimmune origin. It occurs in genetically predisposed people and is induced by a gluten protein, which is a component of wheat. The prevalence of histologically confirmed CD is estimated in screening studies of adults in the United States and Europe to be between 0.2% and 1.0%. The results of previous studies have indicated that the prevalence of CD is increased in patients with other autoimmune disorders such as: autoimmune thyroid diseases,

OBJECTIVE: The protein tyrosine phosphatase N22 (PTPN22) gene exhibits regulatory activities for both T cells and B cells. A missense single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) within this gene (rs2476601) has recently been associated with 4 autoimmune diseases: rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus, autoimmune thyroid disease, and type 1 diabetes mellitus, all of which are T cell-mediated and associated with the elaboration of autoantibody. The aim of this study was to investigate associations of the missense SNP of PTPN22 in a number of autoimmune diseases in the UK population, i

Chronic infections with hepatitis C virus (HCV) are associated with various autoimmune manifestations, i.e. mixed cryoglobulinemia, membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, autoimmune thyroid diseases, sporadic porphyria cutanea tarda and B cell lymphoma. Since exacerbation of hepatitis occurs in 5-10% of HCV patients receiving interferon-alpha treatment and may be successfully treated by immunosuppression afterwards, hepatitis C was also suspected to be associated with autoimmune hepatitis. LKM3 autoantibodies in chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection and epitope recognition are discussed

Since the aberrant HLA-DR expression on thyroid follicular cells (TFC) has been found in glands already having an ongoing immune response, the possibility exists that this ectopic expression is not the primary event leading to the infiltration by autoreactive lymphocytes, but rather a consequence of that infiltration. We have explored that possibility in studies on the behaviour of TFC from normal and autoimmune glands with respect to their expression of HLA-DR antigens when they are cultured with or without autologous mononuclear cells from the intrathyroidal infiltrates or peripheral blood.

We report a case of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC)-autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) overlap syndrome with concurrent idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and Hashimoto's disease with positivity for anticentromere antibody. The patient was a 64-year-old woman with symptoms of jaundice and general fatigue. About 30 years earlier, she had been diagnosed as having ITP and had undergone splenectomy. As part of her present history, she had exhibited liver dysfunction in 1995, during the follow-up of Hashimoto's disease, and a liver biopsy led to the diagnosis of PBC. In March 2000, she was admitted

The occurrence of corticosteroid-induced hepatitis is a rare event that has been recently described in the literature. We report the case of an acute cytolytic hepatitis in a patient treated with methylprednisolone for multiple sclerosis associated with an autoimmune thyroid dysfunction. After ruling out other etiologies, we concluded that the acute liver injury was due to steroids, and we analyzed the specific circumstances in the literature where methylprednisolone may have been responsible for acute hepatitis.
