Differentiation in poult plumage color of f1 progeny from crosses between white and black indigenous turkeys.

A study assessed the poult plumage color of F1 progeny from artificially inseminated crossings between white and black indigenous turkeys. 72 hens (32 black, 40 white) and 10 toms were used (5 black and 5 white). The turkeys were grouped into four treatments based on the breeding plans: T1 (White toms × White hens), T2 (Black toms × Black hens), T3 (White toms × black hens), and T4 (Black toms × White hens). Semen was harvested from five white toms, pooled, and inseminated into hens in T1 and T3. Semen harvested from five black toms were also pooled and inseminated into hens in T2 and T4. All …

Frontal White Matter Hyperintensities Effect on Default Mode Network Connectivity in Acute Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

The functional connectivity of the brain depends not only on the structural integrity of the cortex but also on the white matter pathways between cortical areas. White matter hyperintensities (WMH), caused by chronic hypoperfusion in the white matter, play a role in the outcome of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other neurodegenerative disorders. Herein, we investigate how the location and volume of WMH affect the default-mode network (DMN) connectivity in acute mild TBI (mTBI) patients. Forty-six patients with acute mTBI and 46 matched healthy controls were enrolled in the study. All partici…

White Matter Abnormalities and Cognitive Deficit After Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Comparing DTI, DKI, and NODDI.

White matter (WM) disruption is an important determinant of cognitive impairment after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), but traditional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) shows some limitations in assessing WM damage. Diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI) and neurite orientation dispersion and density imaging (NODDI) show advantages over DTI in this respect. Therefore, we used these three diffusion models to investigate complex WM changes in the acute stage after mTBI. From 32 mTBI patients and 31 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls, we calculated eight diffusion metrics based on DTI …

Microstructural Properties of Brain White Matter Tracts in Breast Cancer Survivors: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study.

Complex breast cancer (BC) treatment can cause various neurological and psychiatric complications, such as postmastectomy pain syndrome, vestibulocerebellar ataxia, and depression, which can lead to microstructural damage of the white matter tracts of the brain. The purpose of the study is to assess microstructural changes in the white matter tracts of the brain in BC survivors using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Single DTI scans were performed on patients (n = 84) after complex BC treatment (i.e., surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy) and on the control group (n = 40). According t…

SpBNIP3 regulates apoptosis and autophagy in mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) during white spot syndrome virus infection.

BNIP3 (BCL2 and adenovirus E1B 19-kDa-interacting protein 3), which is a pro-apoptotic protein in the BCL-2 family involves a variety of cell signaling pathways, including mitochondrial dysfunction, mitochondrial autophagy, and apoptosis in vertebrates. However, the role of BNIP3 in the regulation of apoptosis and/or autophagy in crustaceans suffering virus infection is still limited. In this study, the mud crab (Scylla paramamosain) BNIP3 (SpBNIP3) was identified and studied to elucidate its association with the white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infection. SpBNIP3 was widely expressed in all t…

White matter connectometry in patients with disorders of consciousness revealed by 7-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging.

White matter disruption plays an important role in disorders of consciousness (DOC). The aim of this study was to analyze the connectometry between DOC patients and healthy controls and to explore the relationship between diffusion connectometry and levels of consciousness. Fourteen patients with DOC and 13 sex- and age-matched controls were included in this study. The participants underwent diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and T1-weighted structural MRI at 7 Tesla. Diffusion MRI connectometry was performed to investigate the differences between groups, and to subsequently study the …

Genome-wide associations of aortic distensibility suggest causality for aortic aneurysms and brain white matter hyperintensities.

Aortic dimensions and distensibility are key risk factors for aortic aneurysms and dissections, as well as for other cardiovascular and cere … eurysms. Multivariable MR suggests a causal relationship between aortic distensibility and cerebral white matter hyperintensities, mechanistically linking aortic traits and brain small vessel disease.

Tanshinone IIA and its derivative activate thermogenesis in adipocytes and induce "beiging" of white adipose tissue.

Tanshinone IIA (TAN2A) is a major active ingredient of Salvia miltiorrhiza used in traditional Chinese medicine and tanshinone 20 (TAN20) is a derivative of TAN2A. In this study, we examined the effects of TAN2A and TAN20 on adipogenesis, lipid metabolism, and thermogenesis. Our experiments showed that both TAN2A and TAN20 increased mitochondria content in adipose tissue, enhanced energy expenditure, reduced body weight, and improved insulin sensitivity and metabolic homeostasis in obese and diabetic mouse models. We demonstrated that TAN20 can facilitate the transformation from white to beige…

Left Frontal White Matter Links to Rhythm Processing Relevant to Speech Production in Apraxia of Speech.

Recent mechanistic models argue for a key role of rhythm processing in both speech production and speech perception. Patients with the non-fluent variant (NFV) of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) with apraxia of speech (AOS) represent a specific study population in which this link can be examined. Previously, we observed impaired rhythm processing in NFV with AOS. We hypothesized that a shared neurocomputational mechanism structures auditory input (sound and speech) and output (speech production) in time, a "temporal scaffolding" mechanism. Since considerable white matter damage is observed i…

Willis Lecture: Biomarkers for Inflammatory White Matter Injury in Binswanger Disease Provide Pathways to Precision Medicine.

Binswanger disease is the small vessel form of vascular cognitive impairment and dementia. Deposition of Alzheimer disease proteins can begin in midlife and progress slowly, whereas aging of the vasculature also can begin in midlife, continuing to progress into old age, making mixed dementia the most common type of dementia. Biomarkers facilitate the early diagnosis of dementias. It is possible to diagnose mixed dementia before autopsy with biomarkers for vascular disease derived from diffusor tensor images on magnetic resonance imaging and Alzheimer disease proteins, Aβ (amyloid β), and phosp

Individual differences in attentional lapses are associated with fiber-specific white matter microstructure in healthy adults.

Attentional lapses interfere with goal-directed behaviors, which may result in harmless (e.g., not hearing instructions) or severe (e.g., fatal car accident) consequences. Task-related functional MRI (fMRI) studies have shown a link between attentional lapses and activity in the frontoparietal network. Activity in this network is likely to be mediated by the organization of the white matter fiber pathways that connect the regions implicated in the network, such as the superior longitudinal fasciculus I (SLF-I). In the present study, we investigate the relationship between susceptibility to att…
