Diffusion tensor imaging: tract based spatial statistics study in essential tremor.

INTRODUCTION: Essential tremor (ET) is a common movement disorder with motor and non-motor symptoms. We aimed to investigate the neurodegenerative changes in the brain white matter of patients with ET using Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI). METHODS: Clinical and MRI data from 20 patients (5 women and 15 men; age-38.2 ± 16.5 yrs) with ET and 17 controls (3 women and 14 men; age-40.7 ± 16.5 yrs) were collected prospectively. The DTI data were analyzed using tract based spatial statistics (TBSS) software for tract wise analysis. Further region of interest (ROI) analysis was carried out in the genu

Effects of lactate on the early visual cortex of non-human primates, investigated by pharmaco-MRI and neurochemical analysis.

In contrast to the limited use of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in clinical diagnostics, it is currently a mainstay of neuroimaging in clinical and basic brain research. However, its non-invasive use in combination with its high temporal and spatial resolution would make fMRI a perfect diagnostic tool. We are interested in whether a pharmacological challenge imposed on the brain can be reliably traced by the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signal and possibly further exploited for diagnostics. We have chosen a systemic challenge with lactate and pyruvate to test whether the

Black blood MRI in suspected large artery primary angiitis of the central nervous system.

OBJECTIVES: Single case reports suggest that black blood MRI (T1-weighted fat and blood suppressed sequences with and without contrast injection; BB-MRI) may visualize intracranial vessel wall contrast enhancement (CE) in primary angiitis of the central nervous system (PACNS). In this single-center observational pilot study we prospectively investigated the value of BB-MRI in the diagnosis of large artery PACNS. METHODS: Patients with suspected large artery PACNS received a standardized diagnostic program including BB-MRI. Vessel wall CE was graded (grade 0-2) by two experienced readers blind

Correlation between gray matter density-adjusted brain perfusion and age using brain MR images of 202 healthy children.

We examined the correlation between brain perfusion and age using pulsed arterial spin-labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance images (MRI) in a large number of healthy children. We collected data on brain structural and ASL perfusion MRI in 202 healthy children aged 5-18 years. Structural MRI data were segmented and normalized, applying a voxel-based morphometric analysis. Perfusion MRI was normalized using the normalization parameter of the corresponding structural MRI. We calculated brain perfusion with an adjustment for gray matter density (BP-GMD) by dividing normalized ASL MRI by normalized gr

Pramipexole modulates the neural network of reward anticipation.

Pramipexole is widely prescribed to treat Parkinson's disease. It has been found to cause impulse control disorders such as pathological gambling. To examine how pramipexole modulates the network of reward anticipation, we carried out a pharmacological functional magnetic resonance imaging study with a double-blind, within-subject design. During the anticipation of monetary rewards, pramipexole increased the activity of the nucleus accumbens (NAcc), enhanced the interaction between the NAcc and the anterior insula, but weakened the interaction between the NAcc and the prefrontal cortex. These

Measuring functional connectivity using MEG: methodology and comparison with fcMRI.

Functional connectivity (FC) between brain regions is thought to be central to the way in which the brain processes information. Abnormal connectivity is thought to be implicated in a number of diseases. The ability to study FC is therefore a key goal for neuroimaging. Functional connectivity (fc) MRI has become a popular tool to make connectivity measurements but the technique is limited by its indirect nature. A multimodal approach is therefore an attractive means to investigate the electrodynamic mechanisms underlying hemodynamic connectivity. In this paper, we investigate resting state FC

Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging can predict neurological recovery after surgery for cervical spondylotic myelopathy: a prospective study with blinded assessments.

BACKGROUND: Factors that can predict the recovery of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) patients postoperatively are of significant interest to physicians and patients and their families. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans are a common method of examination after surgery, and thus of interest as a predictor of outcome. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether findings on MRI at 6 months postoperatively could predict recovery at 1 year in CSM patients. METHODS: In 52 consecutive prospective patients, MRI was performed preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. T1 and T2 signal change (area,

Neural correlates of high-level adaptation-related aftereffects.

Prolonged exposure to complex stimuli, such as faces, biases perceptual decisions toward nonadapted, dissimilar stimuli, leading to contrastive aftereffects. Here we tested the neural correlates of this perceptual bias using a functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation (fMRIa) paradigm. Adaptation to a face or hand stimulus led to aftereffects by biasing the categorization of subsequent ambiguous face/hand composite stimuli away from the adaptor category. The simultaneously observed fMRIa in the face-sensitive fusiform face area (FFA) and in the body-part-sensitive extrastriate body area

A comparison of visual and quantitative assessment of left ventricular ejection fraction by cardiac magnetic resonance.

To determine the accuracy of visual analysis of left ventricular (LV) function in comparison with the accepted quantitative gold standard method, cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). Cine CMR imaging was performed at 1.5 T on 44 patients with a range of ejection fractions (EF, 5-80%). Clinicians (n = 18) were asked to visually assess EF after sequentially being shown cine images of a four chamber (horizontal long axis; HLA), two chamber (vertical long axis; VLA) and a short axis stack (SAS) and results were compared to a commercially available analysis package. There were strong correlations betw

Somatosensory system in two types of motor reorganization in congenital hemiparesis: topography and function.

This study investigates the (re-)organization of somatosensory functions following early brain lesions. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), passive hand movement was studied. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) were used as complementary methods. fMRI data was analyzed on the first level with regard to topographical variability; second-level group effects as well as the overall integrity of the somatosensory circuitry were also assessed. Subjects with unilateral brain lesions occurring in the third trimester of pregnancy or perinatally with

Temporal feature of BOLD responses varies with temporal patterns of movement.

Which brain sites represent the final form of motor commands that encode temporal patterns of muscle activities? Here, we show the possible brain sites which have activity equivalent to the motor commands with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We hypothesized that short-temporal patterns of movements or stimuli are reflected in blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) responses and we searched for regions representing the response. Participants performed two temporal patterns of tapping and/or listened to the same patterns of auditory stimuli in a 3T fMRI. The patterns were designe

Impact of virtual monoenergetic images on the assessability of lower extremity arteries in (Poly-) trauma photon-counting detector CT.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) is state of the art imaging modality in patients after severe trauma. A double-bolus contrast media protocol can be used to combine both arterial and parenchymal contrast in one scan. In case of lower extremity trauma, the CT scans can be extended to include the legs in order to rule out vascular pathologies. Virtual monoenergetic (VME) images derived from a Photon-Counting detector CT (PCDCT) proved to be helpful in vascular diagnostics and could therefore also add information in these extended trauma scans. Aim of this study was to determine the VME recon
