Inequalities in childhood injury and safety practices exist, but there is little evidence that targeted interventions can reduce such inequalities. This study examines the effect of a home safety intervention on reducing inequalities in safety practices using a secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial. Families with children <5 years from disadvantaged areas were randomized to receive a standardized health visitor safety consultation and free or low-cost safety equipment fitted in the home or to usual care. The impact of the intervention in terms of stair gate use and func

OBJECTIVE: In 1999, a folic acid campaign for prevention of neural tube defects was started in Nuevo León, México, with the recommendation of taking a 5000 -mcg tablet of folic acid per week. The purpose of this study was to compare the epidemiology of neural tube defects after four years of the campaign.
METHODS: Cases of anencephaly, spina bifida, and encephalocele (ICD Q00, Q01, Q05, 10th Ed.) from public and private hospitals were registered by immediate notification, death certificates, and fetal death registries. Comparisons of neural tube defects rates, phenotype distribution of cases,

Maternal smoking during pregnancy has been linked to high costs. This study estimates the magnitude of excess costs attributable to smoking during pregnancy for mothers and infants. The model estimates smoking-attributable costs for 11 infant and maternal conditions. From a claims database of 7784 mothers and 7901 infants who had deliveries during 1996, we estimated total cost over the infants' first year of life for each mother and infant and identified each complication of interest, based on ICD-9 codes. The average cost for smokers and non-smokers could not be computed directly because smok

Information concerning 9919 singleton pregnancies delivered in Jamaica in the 2-month period of September and October 1986 and surviving the early neonatal period were compared with 1847 singleton perinatal deaths occurring in the 12-month period from 1 September 1986 to 31 August 1987, classified according to the Wigglesworth schema. Logistic regression was used to assess features of antenatal and intrapartum care that were associated with the different groups of perinatal death after taking account of environmental, maternal and medical factors. In Jamaica, 67% of all mothers took iron durin

The evolution of a perinatal center over the past 12 years was reviewed. Factors in obstetric practices, maternal morbidity, and perinatal mortality were evaluated. The reduction in conditions leading to uteroplacental insufficiency (toxemia, hypertension, high parity) has been the most significant result. This in turn has led to a decrease in deaths from abruption, asphyxia, and respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The practice of referring high-risk mothers to a perinatal center for delivery can continue to reduce perinatal mortality significantly.

BACKGROUND: RSVpreF is a vaccine that immunises against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a seasonal respiratory virus, that can lead to lower respiratory tract infections. In Switzerland, RSVpreF is indicated for the passive protection of infants against RSV following maternal immunisation.
OBJECTIVE: The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health commissioned a health technology assessment (HTA) of RSVpreF for maternal vaccination, evaluating the clinical and cost effectiveness of the vaccine compared with nirsevimab (administered directly to newborns and infants) or no RSV prophylaxis. This st

BACKGROUND: Data on long-term maternal quality of life following a periviable delivery are lacking. We investigated quality of life measures among patients who delivered a periviable infant.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who delivered between gestational ages 220/7 to 256/7 weeks at a single institution from 2013 to 2019 and who completed the validated World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire between 2021 and 2022. Mothers who had a surviving infant discharged from the hospital were compared with mothers who had an in

Physical activity has numerous health benefits, including for women of reproductive age (18-44 years), among whom it can prevent chronic disease, including osteoporosis, and improve maternal health. Understanding the prevalence of leisure-time physical activity among different sociodemographic groups of women of reproductive age can help guide public health interventions and messaging. Data from the 2022 and 2024 National Health Interview Survey were used to examine the prevalences of self-reported leisure-time physical activity and meeting recommendations in the Physical Activity Guidelines f…

BACKGROUND: Maternal nutrition impacts fetal growth and development. The Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) guidelines recommend pregnant women consume 2-3 servings (224-336 g) of fish/seafood per week to support intake of long chain omega 3 fatty acids, given adequate consumption supports numerous health benefits including reduced risk of preterm and early preterm birth. Evidence indicates that pregnant women purposely lower their fish/seafood intake, largely due to fears of methylmercury exposure. The aim of this study was to explore pregnant women's knowledge, attitudes, and behav

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and early motherhood represent periods of significant psychological vulnerability. An estimated 10-15% of mothers experience postpartum depression (PPD) annually in India. Maternal mental health (MMH) represents a critical public health concern, impacting both maternal and child well-being. This study constitutes the first qualitative exploration in India to examine perspectives of both mothers and healthcare professionals regarding PPD for the development of culturally appropriate educational intervention.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This qualitative exploratory study, condu

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health problems are common yet often under-detected and under-treated in primary care and community services. International guidelines call for integration of mental health into perinatal care, but clarity is lacking on how best to equip non-specialist providers. Training and supervision programmes exist but vary widely in content and delivery, and their effectiveness and feasibility across settings are not comprehensively synthesised.
AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of perinatal mental health training for primary care and community-based providers on provider

OBJECTIVES: Perinatal mental health has long been acknowledged as fundamental to the well-being of mothers and infants, yet the recognition of disorders such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and - far less commonly - psychosis still lags behind clinical need. Even where validated screening tools exist, detection remains inconsistent, and many women navigate pregnancy and the postpartum period with symptoms that go unspoken or unnoticed. In some high-income settings, suicide has emerged as a leading contributor to maternal mortality, a reminder that the health consequences of these conditions

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health concern and a human rights problem worldwide, leading to severe effects on women's physical, mental, economic, and reproductive health. Despite its prevalence, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as Papua New Guinea (PNG), IPV often goes unaddressed during pregnancy, even though it is linked to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.
AIM: This study explores the perspectives of senior clinical healthcare providers, managers, and administrators regarding the integration of IPV screening into routine antenata

BACKGROUND: Significant racial inequities exist in perinatal mood disorders and diagnoses. Traditional postpartum care consists of a singular six-week visit, which leaves many individuals feeling unsupported. Postpartum home visiting programs have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing symptoms of perinatal depression. Preliminary evidence suggests that cash transfers can improve both mental health and maternal health.
METHODS: This study uses the Birth Justice Collaborative Postpartum Support Pilot to evaluate how home visiting coupled with cash transfers supports maternal mental health. Two…

The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affects certain vulnerable groups, including postpartum women. Thus, this work aimed to analyze the mental health evolution in Argentinian postpartum women during the first three waves of COVID-19 and its determinants. In this repeated cross-sectional study, data were collected during the three waves of COVID-19: May-July/2020 (n = 319), April-August/2021 (n = 340), and December/2021- March/2022 (n = 341). Postpartum depression, insomnia, and perceived stress symptoms were assessed using valid instruments. Statistical analyses included multivariate logi

INTRODUCTION: This study fills a critical gap by assessing the prevalence and association between food insecurity and depressive and anxiety symptoms among caregivers of young children in Kenya's arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs).
METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used to collect data from caregivers of children aged 0-3 years from Lamu, Isiolo and Turkana Counties (N = 446). Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 scales were used to assess depressive and anxiety symptoms, respectively. We also administered the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale, alongside so
