Application of the advanced system for implant stability testing (ASIST) to natural teeth for noninvasive evaluation of the tooth root interface.

In this paper we present the development of the Advanced System for Implant Stability Testing (ASIST) for application to natural teeth. The ASIST uses an impact measurement combined with an analytical model of the system and surrounding support to provide a measure of the interface stiffness. In this study, an analytical model is developed for a single-rooted natural tooth allowing the ASIST to estimate the stiffness characteristics of the periodontal ligament (PDL). The geometry and inertia parameters of the tooth model are presented in two ways: (1) using full CT scans of the individual toot

Multidisciplinary management of an impacted maxillary central incisor associated with supernumerary teeth: a case report.

Permanent maxillary central incisor impaction is a rare condition of multifactorial etiology that should be treated on diagnosis. This article describes multidisciplinary treatment of an 11-year-old patient presenting with a permanent maxillary right central incisor that was impacted due to the presence of 2 supernumerary teeth. The diagnosis was reached through clinical evaluation, radiography, and cone beam computed tomography. Treatment involved the surgical removal of the supernumerary teeth followed by traction of the impacted tooth through a combination of removable and fixed orthodontic

Delayed Eruption of Maxillary Central Incisors Associated with the Presence of Supernumerary Teeth: A Case Report with 18 Months Follow-up.

AIM: The aim of this study is to discuss a case of an 11-year-old pediatric patient, who was diagnosed with delayed eruption of the permanent maxillary central incisors because of palatally impacted supernumerary teeth. BACKGROUND: The delayed eruption of permanent teeth can be a result of blocking by supernumerary teeth and over-retained primary teeth. Early diagnosis can help in avoiding the complications. The management of such cases depends on the stage of teeth development, teeth position, and space availability. Treatment may combine both surgical and orthodontic interventions. CASE DE

Effects of Periodontal Ligament Cells on Alveolar Bone Metabolism under the Action of Force and Inflammatory Factors and Its Molecular Mechanisms.

Periodontal ligament may have independent response to orthodontic stimulation and thus initiate alveolar bone osteogenesis and osteoclasts. Orthodontic-induced alveolar bone remodeling has no bone loss, while inflammation can lead to alveolar bone loss, suggesting that force signal and inflammatory factors may induce the differentiation of undifferentiated cells in the periodontal ligament via different pathways. The strength of the force and the nature of the force (basal tension and fluid shear force) may affect the differentiation of periodontal ligament cells, and may produce antagonistic or

[Orthognathic surgery: the incisor decompensation and its effect on articulation].

INTRODUCTION: The surgical protocols are based on arches preparation before or immediately after the surgical phase. Incisor guides normalization is achieved by incisor decompensation in three dimensions. Place and extend of surgical movements depend on the incisor position obtained at the end of orthodontic preparation. Extraction versus non extraction depends on incisor position planning. Orthognathic surgery induces muscular and temporo-mandibular joint stress which can cause temporo mandibular dysfunction (TMD). OBJECTIVES: This article studies relations between incisor decompensation amp

External cervical resorption: diagnostic and treatment tips.

External cervical resorption is caused, almost exclusively, by dental trauma - especially those characterized by concussion - and is a dental disease to be diagnosed and treated accurately by endodontists. However, the vast majority of the cases is initially diagnosed by an orthodontist, due to the imaging possibilities in standardized documentations. Among the causes of external cervical resorption, it is common to mistakenly attribute it to orthodontic treatment, traumatic occlusion or even to chronic inflammatory periodontal disease. External cervical resorption is associated to dental trau

Physiological correction of lingual dysfunction with the "Tongue Right Positioner": Beneficial effects on the upper airways.

Several studies have demonstrated the beneficial role of functional tongue therapy in stabilizing treatments for dental malocclusion and treating sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the effect on the upper airways of the Tongue Right Positioner device (TRP) used for the correction of atypical swallowing. We analyzed lateral headfilms of 94 orthodontic patients aged between 11 and 17, before the start of treatment and after establishment of mature swallowing, treated with the TRP (TRP group) or by reeducation exercises (control group). In the TR

Occluso-facial manifestations in a child with the Rasmussen syndrome and intercurrent Lyme disease--a case report.

The Rasmussen Syndrome (RS) is a rare neurological disease, usually diagnosed in the 1st decade of life, leading to damage of the central nervous system. It is characterised by sudden seizures in previously healthy children. In this paper we present a case of a 14-year-old female patient with malocclusion who reported to the orthodontic clinic to start orthodontic treatment. The first symptoms of nervous system disorders manifested when the patient was 8 years old. Until then, the patient had been developing correctly. The interview revealed that at the age of 9 the patient was diagnosed with

Using LOINC to link 10 terminology standards to one unified standard in a specialized domain.

Despite the existence of multiple standards for the coding of biomedical data and the known benefits of doing so, there remain a myriad of biomedical information domain spaces that are essentially un-coded and unstandardized. Perhaps a worse situation is when the same or similar information in a given domain is coded to a variety of different standards. Such is the case with cephalometrics - standardized measurements of angles and distances between specified landmarks on X-ray film used for orthodontic treatment planning and a variety of research applications. We describe how we unified the ex

Resubmergence technique for the management of soft tissue recession around an implant: case report.

Implant restoration in the anterior maxilla is a true challenge for clinicians. Facial tissue recession around the implant prosthesis is one of most difficult situations to correct. This report details the treatment of a female patient who presented with a root fracture of the maxillary left central incisor and crossbite of the left canines. The treatment protocol included implant placement and subsequent orthodontic treatment to correct the crossbite, with the implant used as adjunctive anchorage. However, labial tissue recession around the implant restoration occurred following orthodontic t

Three-dimensional facial surface analysis of patients with skeletal malocclusion.

Three-dimensional (3D) laser surface scanning analysis has taken hold in orthodontics, as well as craniomaxillofacial and plastic surgery as a new tool that can navigate away from the limitations of conventional two-dimensional methods. Various techniques for 3D reconstruction of the face have been used in diagnosis, treatment planning and simulation, and outcomes follow-up. The aim of the current prospective study was to present some technical aspects for the assessment of facial changes after orthodontic and orthognathic surgery treatment using 3D laser surface scanning. The technique propos

Adult patient with mandibular protrusion and unstable occlusion treated with titanium screw anchorage.

Orthodontic treatment for adults can be difficult because they often have several problems, including some associated with aging. This article reports the successful use of miniscrews to treat a 51-year-old woman with Class III malocclusion, unstable occlusion, periodontal disease, and temporomandibular disorder. The patient had a skeletal Class III jaw-base relationship, anterior and unilateral posterior crossbites, and a deviated midline. It was therefore necessary to confirm her mandibular position with a stabilization splint. Miniscrews were implanted in the retromolar area and used to mov

The influences of molar intrusion on the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle and root using the skeletal anchorage system in dogs.

The skeletal anchorage system (SAS) was developed as intraoral rigid anchors for open-bite correction by intrusion of molars. Since the application of SAS is a new modality in orthodontic treatment, the influences of radical molar intrusion on the root and the inferior alveolar neurovascular bundle were unknown. The purpose of this research is to verify the effect of molar intrusion on the neurovascular bundle, the level of osseointegration of bone screws, and root resorption. The results of this study showed mandibular molars were intruded 3.4 mm on the average over 7 months in dogs. The mini

[Correlation of x-ray cephalometric parameters of the gnathic part of the skull with dental anthropometric parameters and data of functional tests in subjects with normal occlusion].

Anthropometric, functional, and long-distance x-ray examinations of 26 subjects with normal occlusion (14 women and 12 men aged 20-27 years) were carried out in order to define the topographic and anatomical criteria for repair of maxillofacial harmony in case of lost occlusive checkpoints. Basic topographic and anatomical criteria of repair of the maxillofacial system in patients with lost occlusion checkpoints (level of position and direction of occlusion surface in the facial skull) were defined on the basis of long-distance roentgenograms of the head in the lateral projection. Transverse changes after surgical closure of complete cleft lip, alveolus and palate.

Surgery for patients with unilateral (UCLP) and bilateral (BCLP) complete cleft lip, alveolus and palate has a considerable influence upon craniofacial growth. With respect to this, the cleft team at Hannover Medical School has attempted to reduce necessary surgical interventions to labioplasty, palatoplasty and veloplasty. Still, the effects of these operations influence maxillary growth to an extent which requires orthodontic treatment in all patients. This study focuses upon the transverse alterations of the alveolar arch and the deciduous dentition after lip and palate surgery. Dental cast

[The adjustment of the canine teeth adjacent to the cleft depending on the time of late primary osteoplasty].

Timing for secondary bone-grafting is decisive for a successful orthodontic alignment of canines, adjacent to the cleft. This could be shown after evaluation of diagnostic data from 123 patients with unilateral cleft alveolus and cleft lip and palate and in a clinical follow-up of 29 former patients, 7.3 year after treatment. Concerning eruption and periodontal conditions of cleft adjacent canines, better results could always be seen, if bone was grafted, before mineralisation of canine root has reached 3/4 of its total length. If grafting was done after this stage, disturbances in eruption oc

Canines erupted through grafted alveolar cleft defects in patients with alveolar clefts: a pulp testing evaluation study.

An electric pulp tester (EPT) was used to evaluate the pulpal response of erupted canines in 75 patients: 16 patients with unilateral cleft palate who received autogenous bone grafts to correct their alveolar cleft defects before canine eruption; 35 patients without cleft palate whose canines erupted spontaneously, but who required orthodontic treatment for alignment; and 24 patients without clefts whose canines required surgical uncovering and orthodontic assistance for eruption. Thirty-one percent of the erupted canines in the patients with grafted unilateral clefts did not respond to EPT, w

Reliability and reproducibility of a best-fit superimposition method for digital models of adult patients treated without extractions.

INTRODUCTION: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is considered the gold standard for 3-dimensional (3D) superimposition in assessing tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. However, given current guidelines emphasizing the reduction of radiation exposure, this study aimed to evaluate the accuracy, reliability, and reproducibility of a digital model superimposition technique that does not require CBCT. METHODS: This retrospective study included 10 adult patients who underwent comprehensive orthodontic treatment without extractions. All patients had full-head CBCT scans and corresponding
