Breed-Specific Dental Variations in Dogs Assessing Malocclusions Using Computed Tomography (CT).

Dental malocclusions are common and often underdiagnosed situations in dogs, which might result in oral trauma, impaired mastication, and periodontal disease. Nevertheless, scientific investigations into breed-specific variations in dentition remain scarce. To evaluate breed-specific dental variations in dogs, a retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 92 clinical canine head computed tomography (CT) scans obtained in Chengdu, China, representing a range of breeds and skull morphologies. Dental alignment and occlusal relationships were calculated using standardized malocclusion …

A Material Approach to Endangered Species Conservation: Characterization and 3D Imaging of Ballistic Damage in the Casques of Helmeted Hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil).

The helmeted hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil), a critically endangered bird prized for the distinctive helmet-like "casque" capping its beak, faces threats from poaching and habitat loss. This study applies biomaterials/imaging techniques to wildlife forensics, using micro-computed tomography to forensically analyse bullet-induced damage in a unique collection of helmeted hornbill skull specimens, confiscated by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) of Hong Kong. The findings reveal diverse healing responses, bullet characteristics and indications of the poaching strategies u…

Childhood brain tumors instruct cranial hematopoiesis and immunotolerance.

Recent research has challenged a long-held view of the brain as an immune-privileged organ, revealing active immunosurveillance with therapeutic relevance. Using a new genetically engineered mouse model of ZFTA-RELA ependymoma, a childhood brain tumor, we characterized an immune circuit between the tumor and antigen-presenting hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) in the skull bone marrow. The presentation of antigens by HSPCs to CD4+ T cells biased HSPC lineages toward myelopoiesis and polarized CD4+ T cells to regulatory T cells, culminating in tumor immunotolerance. Remarkably, no…

Identification of a Hidden Lesion in Meckel's Cave: A Diagnostic Odyssey of Unilateral Facial Pain in a Nonagenarian.

Fibrous dysplasia of the temporal bone and petrous apex is an uncommon benign fibro-osseous disorder, particularly in elderly individuals. Involvement of the skull base may present with atypical cranial neuropathies and may mimic inflammatory, vascular, or neoplastic diseases. This report describes a 90-year-old woman with recurrent unilateral facial pain and episodic facial muscle contractions. Initial assessment considered neoplastic pathology and inflammatory vasculopathy. Serial clinical evaluations, laboratory investigations, and neuroimaging established the diagnosis of left petrous apex…

Management of Aggressive Recurrent Meningioma Using a Combined Transfacial-Pterional Approach.

Skull base meningiomas, although histologically benign, can exhibit locally aggressive behavior, particularly when arising from the sphenoid wing. Their potential to infiltrate bone and extend extracranially into the orbit, infratemporal fossa, and facial soft tissues significantly increases surgical complexity and recurrence risk. Complete resection in these cases requires wide anatomical exposure and multidisciplinary planning to preserve critical neurovascular structures while achieving oncologic control. We present the case of a woman with a recurrent sphenoid wing meningioma extending int…

Efficacy of Surgical Reconstruction With Rectus Abdominis Flap Following en Bloc Resection of the Orbital Contents for Malignant Lacrimal Gland Cancer: A Case Series.

In cases of lacrimal gland carcinoma requiring surgical excision of the orbital contents, skull base, and surrounding bones, definitive blockage of the cranial cavity and reconstruction of the anterior skull base with irradiation-acceptable tissue (for possible subsequent radiotherapy) is necessary. However, considerations for quality of life, including cosmetic aspects, such as artificial eye placement and contour morphology, make reconstruction challenging. In three cases of advanced lacrimal gland carcinoma, we performed a reconstruction surgery following an en bloc resection of the orbital…

Fontanellar bone - A rarity in pediatric cranial abnormalities.

BACKGROUND: Fontanelles, membranous gaps in the infant skull, are integral for accommodating the expansion of the skull by the growing brain postnatally. The anterior fontanelle, situated at the frontal-parietal bone intersection, typically closes gradually within the first two years. Fontanellar bone, an exceedingly rare ossification anomaly of the anterior fontanelle, clinically mimics craniosynostosis. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the case of a 22-day-old male with an almost closed anterior fontanelle who underwent evaluation. Prenatal and postnatal history were unremarkable. Physical exam…

Endometrial Sarcoma Metastasis to the Pterygopalatine Fossa: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Metastatic skull base malignancies infrequently occur but, when present, typically arise from breast malignancies. Pterygopalatine fossa (PPF) metastasis of any malignancy is further seldom reported, and metastasis of gynecologic malignancies to the PPF has not been previously described in the literature. We present a single case of a 42-year-old female with the first likely case of high-grade endometrial sarcoma metastatic to the PPF. The patient presented with facial pain and numbness in the V2 distribution presented for evaluation. History was significant for several months of dysmenorrhea …

Three-Layer Reconstruction with Iliotibial Tract After Endoscopic Resection of Sinonasal Tumors.

Watertight reconstruction to separate the intradural compartment from the sinonasal cavities is crucial after endoscopic resection with transnasal craniectomy for nasoethmoidal tumors. A 3-layer reconstruction with the iliotibial tract is a safe and reliable alternative when vascularized flaps are unavailable. The iliotibial tract graft is harvested on the lateral aspect of the thigh and divided into 3 portions, which are positioned in a multilayered fashion to close the skull base defect: the intracranial intradural layer (first layer), the intracranial extradural layer (second layer), and th…
