Persons with a thermolabile form of the enzyme 5,10 methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) have reduced enzyme activity and increased plasma homocysteine which can be lowered by supplemental folic acid. Thermolability of the enzyme has recently been shown to be caused by a common mutation (677C-->T) in the MTHFR gene. In a multicentre study, a clinical evaluation of the new titanium implants of the sizes 2.7, 2.0 and 1.5 mm was done. By means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) the antibody responses were detected in sera from normal persons (n = 275), patients with various types of bacteremia (n = 137), and patients with endocarditis (n = 28). Four ELISAs were evaluated. As antigens ultrasonic extracts of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, and nonhemolytic streptococci were used. The antibody levels against S. aureus increased with age, while antibodies against the other bacteria showed no age variation. The different ELISA systems showed many serological cross-reactions.

In this study we analyzed the changing behavior patterns of aged persons seeking medical care at hospitals and clinics over a recent ten-year period. The results showed a rapid increase in the number of aged outpatients receiving care at hospitals since 1977. In contrast, the number of aged outpatients receiving care at clinics since 1977 fluctuated with an overall downward trend, indicating outpatients' preference to seek treatments in hospital as opposed to clinics. We report 2 cases of adult T cell leukemia (ATL) from hemodialysis (HD) patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) in the Kagoshima district, an endemic area of human T cell leukemia virus type I(HTLV-I) in Japan. The author presents the epidemiological analysis of lip cancer in the sub-region of Varazdin. The parameters such as sex, age, histological type, localization and occupation of all recorded patients with lip cancer were analyzed. Woodworking equipment produces approximately 720,000 injuries per year often causing severe psychologic and functional impairment.
