Interaction of human adenoviruses and coliphages with kaolinite and bentonite.

Human adenoviruses (hAdVs) are pathogenic viruses responsible for public health problems worldwide. They have also been used as viral indicators in environmental systems. Coliphages (e.g., MS2, ΦX174) have also been studied as indicators of viral pollution in fecally contaminated water. Our objective was to evaluate the distribution of three viral fecal indicators (hAdVs, MS2, and ΦΧ174), between two different phyllosilicate clays (kaolinite and bentonite) and the aqueous phase. A series of static and dynamic experiments were conducted under two different temperatures (4, 25°C) for a time peri

Choose and Book: a sociological analysis of 'resistance' to an expert system.

In 2004, the English Department of Health introduced a technology (Choose and Book) designed to help general practitioners and patients book hospital outpatient appointments. It was anticipated that remote booking would become standard practice once technical challenges were overcome. But despite political pressure and financial incentives, Choose and Book remained unpopular and was generally used reluctantly if at all. Policymakers framed this as a problem of 'clinician resistance'. We considered Choose and Book from a sociological perspective. Our dataset, drawn from a qualitative study of c

[Contribution of hospitalizations for primary care-sensitive conditions to the profile of admissions in the public health care system].

OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations in the city of Divinópolis, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, to estimate the prevalence of hospitalizations for primary care-sensitive conditions (HPCSC), and to evaluate the factors associated with the occurrence of HPCSC. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted of the two public health care institutions in Divinópolis qualified to hospitalize individuals; that is, a general hospital and an urgent care unit. The data were collected between July and October 2011. Admissions were screened based on information available

Mapping the aetiology of non-malarial febrile illness in Southeast Asia through a systematic review--terra incognita impairing treatment policies.

BACKGROUND: An increasing use of point of care diagnostic tests that exclude malaria, coupled with a declining malaria burden in many endemic countries, is highlighting the lack of ability of many health systems to manage other causes of febrile disease. A lack of knowledge of distribution of these pathogens, and a lack of screening and point-of-care diagnostics to identify them, prevents effective management of these generally treatable contributors to disease burden. While prospective data collection is vital, an untapped body of knowledge already exists in the published health literature.

Aging in neighborhoods differing in walkability and income: associations with physical activity and obesity in older adults.

While there is a growing literature on the relations between neighborhood design and health factors such as physical activity and obesity, less focus has been placed on older adults, who may be particularly vulnerable to environmental influences. This study evaluates the relations among objectively measured neighborhood design, mobility impairment, and physical activity and body weight in two U.S. regional samples of community dwelling older adults living in neighborhoods differing in walkability and income levels. An observational design involving two time points six months apart was employed

Are birth kits a good idea? A systematic review of the evidence.

OBJECTIVE: to identify the current state of knowledge regarding the effects of births kits on clean birth practices and on newborn and maternal outcomes. DESIGN: the scoping review was informed through a systematic literature review; a call for information distributed to experts in maternal and child health, relevant research centres and specialist libraries; and a search of the web sites of groups working in the area of maternal and child health. Data were synthesised to produce a summary of the state of knowledge regarding birth kits. Meta-analysis was not attempted because of the varied st

WHO Expert Consultation on rabies.

More than 99% of all human rabies deaths occur in the developing world, and although effective and economical control measures are available, the disease has not been brought under control throughout most of the affected countries. Given that a major factor in the low level of commitment to rabies control is a lack of accurate data on the true public health impact of the disease, this report of a WHO Expert Consultation begins by providing new data on the estimated burden of the disease and its distribution in the world. It also reviews recent progress in the classification of rabies viruses,

Fetal origins of developmental plasticity: are fetal cues reliable predictors of future nutritional environments?

Evidence that fetal nutrition triggers permanent adjustments in a wide range of systems and health outcomes is stimulating interest in the evolutionary significance of these responses. This review evaluates the postnatal adaptive significance of fetal developmental plasticity from the perspective of life history theory and evolutionary models of energy partitioning. Birthweight is positively related to multiple metabolically costly postnatal functions, suggesting that the fetus has the capacity to distribute the burden of energy insufficiency when faced with a nutritionally challenging environ

Do all patients in primary care who may benefit from eradication of Helicobacter pylori have access to effective care?

The purpose of this study was to identify those patients who would benefit from eradication therapy for Helicobacter pylori and to understand the scale of service changes needed to implement eradication therapy. All general practices in Bradford Health Authority were invited to take part in the study. Patients who had received more than one repeat prescription for proton pump inhibitors or H(2) receptor antagonists in the previous twelve months were identified using the repeat prescription systems in the participating practices. Their case notes were examined and the relevant data items extrac

Clinician and Patient Perspectives on the Use of Passive Mobile Monitoring and Self-Tracking for Patients With Serious Mental Illness: User-Centered Approach.

BACKGROUND: Early intervention in mental health crises can prevent negative outcomes. A promising new direction is remote mental health monitoring using smartphone technology to passively collect data from individuals to rapidly detect the worsening of serious mental illness (SMI). This technology may benefit patients with SMI, but little is known about health IT acceptability among this population or their mental health clinicians. OBJECTIVE: We used the Health Information Technology Acceptability Model to analyze the acceptability and usability of passive mobile monitoring and self-tracking

Preferred Medication Abortion Support in the Southeastern United States, 2024-2025: A Discrete Choice Experiment.

INTRODUCTION: Medication abortion use is increasing in the United States following policy and legal changes since 2021. Multiple service options exist within and outside of the US health system, but limited evidence addresses individuals' preferences for medication abortion services and support. METHODS: We designed a discrete choice experiment with four attributes and accompanying levels: source of pills ("telehealth visit," "online order," "community network"), out-of-pocket cost ($0-$150), information support ("information sheet," "hotline," in-person "clinic consult," in-person "doula"),

Unnecessary hospitalisations and polypharmacy practices in Romania: A health system evaluation for strengthening primary health care.

BACKGROUND: Children and pregnant women usually have multiple contacts with the health care system. While most conditions can be managed by primary health care (PHC) providers, hospitalisations are nevertheless common and often unjustified. The number of hospitalizations decreased in Romania at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. While this is likely due to the disruption of health services and public health measures established to limit the spread of COVID-19, it also suggests that a proportion of hospitalisations prior to the pandemic were unnecessary. This healthcare system evaluation in Ro

Using reminder/recall systems to improve influenza immunization rates in children with asthma.

INTRODUCTION: Asthma is a major public health concern in the U.S. pediatric population. Children with asthma tend to fare worse when they acquire respiratory illnesses such as influenza, requiring more episodic office visits and hospitalizations than do healthy children with the same illnesses. Despite the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that children with chronic diseases be immunized for seasonal influenza annually, influenza immunization rates in this population peaks at < 30%. The purpose of this literature review was to examine the effectiveness of reminder/recall systems in

The FIGO Ovulatory Disorders Classification System†.

Ovulatory disorders are common causes of amenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding and infertility and are frequent manifestations of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). There are many potential causes and contributors to ovulatory dysfunction that challenge clinicians, trainees, educators, and those who perform basic, translational, clinical and epidemiological research. Similarly, therapeutic approaches to ovulatory dysfunction potentially involve a spectrum of lifestyle, psychological, medical and procedural interventions. Collaborative research, effective education and consistent clinical care r

Implementation research on enhanced community case management of pneumonia in Bangladesh: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Previous trials in Africa and Asia, including Bangladesh, showed that community health workers can effectively treat young infants (7-59 days) with fast breathing and children (2-59 months) with chest indrawing pneumonia at home with oral amoxicillin using enhanced integrated community case management (iCCM) protocols. However, the Enhanced Management of Pneumonia in Community (EMPIC), its pneumonia-specific component, has not yet been applied in routine government health systems. Here, we developed a protocol for a feasibility study on the integration of EMPIC into community clini

Opioid use disorder treatment disruptions during the early COVID-19 pandemic and other emergent disasters: a scoping review addressing dual public health emergencies.

BACKGROUND: During public health emergencies, people with opioid use disorder (PWOUD) may be particularly impacted. Emergent disasters such as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupt already-strained harm reduction efforts and treatment availability. This study aims to answer three research questions. How do public health emergencies impact PWOUD? How can health systems respond to novel public health emergencies to serve PWOUD? How can the results of this scoping review be contextualized to the province of Alberta to inform local stakeholder responses to the pandemic? METHODS: We conducted a scoping re

Cumulative Stress Burden and Association With DNA Methylation in Ethiopian American Immigrants: Protocol for a Community-Engaged, Biopsychosocial Study.

BACKGROUND: Immigrants experience significant health disparities, which are exacerbated by a heavy stress burden, which in turn affects the epigenetic profiles of the immune system, leading to chronic diseases. Cumulative stress burden for immigrants ranges from immigration-related stressors to unique psychosocial, environmental, and everyday challenges, all of which contribute to negative psychological and biological impacts on their health over the life-course. Although social and environmental conditions have been established as key factors driving disparities in health outcomes, the effect
