Background: There is limited literature regarding the treatment of concomitant scapholunate ligament (SL) injuries in acute distal radius fractures (DRFs). We hypothesized that surgical treatment of SL injuries in adult patients with DRFs leads to improved functional outcomes. Methods: A retrospective review was made of 42 adult patients who underwent surgical treatment of a DRF with a SL injury between 2005 and 2013. In all, 39 of the 42 patients sustained an intra-articular DRF (AO B or C). SL injury was diagnosed by SL diastasis > 3 mm on posteroanterior (PA) radiographs, magnetic resonance

AIMS: The crucial role of the radial head in the stability of the elbow in terrible triad injury is acknowledged. This retrospective study aims to compare the results of resection of a severely comminuted radial head with or without prosthetic arthroplasty as part of the reconstruction for this injury.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The outcome of radial head resection was compared with prosthetic arthroplasty in 29 and 15 patients with terrible triad injuries, respectively. There were ten female patients (34.5%) in the resection group and six female patients (40%) in the prosthesis group. The mean ag

Background Groin injury and groin symptoms are common in soccer players. The relationship of groin injury and groin symptoms to reduced hip range of motion (ROM) and previous injury is unclear. Objectives To conduct a retrospective assessment of associations between previous injury and preseason hip ROM and preseason prevalence of severe groin symptoms, and to prospectively identify risk factors for within-season groin injury. Methods During the period of 2015 to 2016, 190 players from 9 Dutch professional soccer clubs participated in this cohort study with prospective and retrospective elemen

OBJECTIVES: Medial clavicle fractures are rare injuries and historically treated non-operatively. Displaced medial clavicle fractures, however, have a higher incidence of delayed- or non-union compared to non- displaced medial clavicle fractures and might benefit from operative treatment. We describe below a new technique for treating intra-articular fractures or extra-articular fractures with a small medial fragment using special locking plates and present the results of our operatively treated patients.
METHODS: First we describe our technique for treating very medial fractures with the rad

BACKGROUND: The treatment of radial neck fractures is controversial and typically depends on displacement. Surgical procedures based on open reduction-internal fixation (ORIF) may lead to several complications, such as avascular necrosis of the radial head, nonunion, malunion, and elbow stiffness. Closed reduction with intramedullary pinning of radial neck fractures, which is commonly used in children, is a viable option for these fractures in adults and may allow for a lower complication rate compared with ORIF. The aim of this study was to report the functional outcome of closed reduction an

BACKGROUND: At Ganga Hospital in Coimbatore, India, a unique approach is applied to treat massive upper limb injuries. However, long-term outcomes of complex reconstruction performed in the resource-limited setting are not known. This hinders understanding of outcomes and disability from these injuries and prevents systematically addressing care delivery around upper extremity trauma in the developing world. This project aims to analyze the details of the unique Ganga Hospital reconstruction experience and use patient-reported outcome measures for the first time in this patient population to e

BACKGROUND: Patients can experience devastating injuries when an upper extremity travels out of a window during a motor vehicle collision. These injuries are typically very severe and may even result in loss of the affected limb. The purposes of this retrospective study were to determine the clinical fate of these extremities and analyze for common factors during the collisions.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 20 patients between 2003 and 2010, evaluating the patient's age, arm involvement, number and types of surgeries, as well as the Mangled Extremity Severity Score (MESS) was cond

BACKGROUND: There are no previous studies on the acromiohumeral distance in shoulders with large-to-massive full-thickness rotator cuff tears. In this study, the acromiohumeral distance in rotator cuff tear and healthy shoulders was measured using 3D-to-2D model-to-image registration techniques.
METHODS: The dynamic glenohumeral kinematics during scapular plane abduction and axial rotation were analyzed in 11 rotator cuff tear patients and 10 healthy control subjects. Periodic radiographic images of scapular plane abduction and axial rotation were taken using a flat-panel radiograph image det

BACKGROUND: Massive rotator cuff tears often lead to superior migration of the humeral head and abnormal shoulder kinematics and function. In an attempt to restore normal joint kinematics, a modular subacromial implant was developed and evaluated in this biomechanical cadaveric study.
METHODS: Eight cadaveric specimens were assessed using a muscle-loading shoulder simulator that applied loads at 0, 30, and 60 degrees of glenohumeral abduction. Testing states included the intact rotator cuff (native), the simulation of a massive rotator cuff tear, and multiple implant states. Two implant thick

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus about the length of the immobilization period after receiving a reverse shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) for a cuff-deficient shoulder. The objective of this study was to determine whether patients receiving an rTSA for a cuff-deficient shoulder could be managed without any immobilization after surgery.
METHODS: Prospective randomized study that included a primary rTSA implanted for a cuff-deficient shoulder. Patients were randomized into group 1 (3-week immobilization) or group 2 (without immobilization). Pain was assessed with the visual analog scale (VAS) the

BACKGROUND: Best surgical of recurrent anterior shoulder instability remained controversial. We knew little about the superiority and choice between traditional open and modern arthroscopic techniques. We hypothesized that outcomes of all patients will be similar regardless of surgical technique.
METHODS: A retrospective case-cohort analysis of 168 patients who had recurrent anterior shoulder instability was conducted from September 2010 to December 2013. All cases (mean age 30.8 [range 18-50] years) were performed with arthroscopic Bankart repair (33 males/20 females), open Latarjet (34 male

PURPOSE: A group of patients affected by bone loss in the context of recurrent anterior shoulder instability were treated arthroscopically with a modified Eden-Hybinette technique since 2005. The last modification was made in 2013, consisting of fixation using a pair of specifically designed double round Endobuttons, which secure the bone graft to the glenoid rim placed through a guide. This report describes patients operated on after this last modification. No reports have described the results of this technique, and the purpose of this study was to assess early clinical and radiological resu

BACKGROUND: Failure after rotator cuff repair remains a major clinical problem and could be related to excessive pressures from the acromion. Previous studies with irreparable tears showed good clinical results of tendon healing with arthroscopic insertion of a protective biodegradable spacer balloon between the repaired tendon and the acromion. One hypothesis is that compression pressures on the repaired tendon will be reduced by the spacer. This cadaver study aimed to investigate the effects of this subacromial spacer on compression pressures over a repaired supraspinatus tendon in passive m

BACKGROUND: Despite surgical advances, repair of rotator cuff tears is associated with 20-70% incidence of recurrent tearing. The tension required to repair the torn tendon influences surgical outcomes and may be dependent on the gap length from torn tendon that must be spanned by the repair. Detailed understanding of forces throughout the range of motion (ROM) may allow surgeons to make evidence-based recommendations for post-operative care.
METHODS: We used a computational shoulder model to assess passive tension and total moment-generating capacity in supraspinatus for repairs of gaps up t
