Direct Healthcare Costs Associated with Oligoarticular Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis at a Single Center.

Oligoarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a common disease in pediatric rheumatology. The management of oligoarticular JIA can result in a considerable economic burden. This study is a four-year, retrospective cost identification analysis performed to determine the annual direct cost of care for patients with oligoarticular JIA and possible predictive clinical factors. Direct healthcare costs were defined as those associated with office visits, laboratory studies, hospital admissions, joint injections, medications, infusions, radiology tests, and emergency room visits. Disease char

Intussusception in an Immunocompromised Patient: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

In a rapidly growing and aging population, heart failure (HF) has become recognised as a public health concern that imposes high economic and societal costs worldwide. HF management stems from the use of highly cost-effective angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and β-blockers to the use of newer drugs such as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), ivabradine, and vericiguat. Modelling studies of pharmacological treatments that report on cost effectiveness in HF is important in order to guide clinical decision making. Multiple cost-effectiveness analysis of dapagliflozi

Modelling of hypothetical SARS-CoV-2 point-of-care tests on admission to hospital from A&E: rapid cost-effectiveness analysis.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the virus that causes coronavirus disease 2019. At the time of writing (October 2020), the number of cases of COVID-19 had been approaching 38 million and more than 1 million deaths were attributable to it. SARS-CoV-2 appears to be highly transmissible and could rapidly spread in hospital wards. OBJECTIVE: The work undertaken aimed to estimate the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of viral detection point-of-care tests for detecting SARS-CoV-2 compared with laboratory-based tests. A further objective was t

Randomised study of sterile versus non-sterile urethral catheterisation.

Indwelling urethral catheters are the most common cause of urinary tract infections (UTI), yet there is no direct evidence that technique of catheter insertion affects this. In a prospective study, 156 patients underwent preoperative urethral catheterisation, randomly allocated to 'sterile' or 'clean/non-sterile' technique groups. There was no statistical difference between the two groups with respect to the incidence of UTI. There was a considerable cost difference between the two groups, the 'sterile' method being over twice as expensive as the 'clean' method. Strict sterility is not necessa

The hidden costs of regeneration in ladybird beetles.

Insects exhibit complex physiological responses to injury, including wound healing, immune activation, and tissue regeneration, all of which impose energetic costs. Regeneration, though adaptive for survival, incurs significant physiological costs, particularly to developmental and reproductive fitness. This study investigates the developmental and reproductive trade-offs associated with limb regeneration in the ladybird beetle Cheilomenes sexmaculata (Fabricius). Third-instar larvae were subjected to leg amputation and observed through pupation to adulthood. Regenerated individuals were compa

Optimising pain management in children with acute otitis media through a primary care-based multifaceted educational intervention: study protocol for a cluster randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Whilst current guidelines highlight the importance of pain management for children with acute otitis media (AOM), there is evidence to suggest that this is not implemented in everyday practice. We have developed a primary care-based multifaceted educational intervention to optimise pain management in children with AOM, and we trial its clinical and cost effectiveness. METHODS: This cluster randomised controlled trial aims to recruit 250 children aged 6 months to 10 years presenting with AOM to general practitioners (GPs) in 30 primary care centres (PCCs) across the Netherlands. Systematic review of economic evaluations of human cell-derived wound care products for the treatment of venous leg and diabetic foot ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Tissue engineering is an emerging field. Novel bioengineered skin substitutes and genetically derived growth factors offer innovative approaches to reduce the burden of diabetic foot and venous leg ulcers for both patients and health care systems. However, they frequently are very costly. Based on a systematic review of the literature, this study assesses the cost-effectiveness of these growth factors and tissue-engineered artificial skin for treating chronic wounds. METHODS: On the basis of an extensive explorative search, an appropriate algorithm for a systematic database search

A multi-product, multi-period vaccine supply chain network planning with injection centers and storage conditions.

This study develops a mixed-integer linear programming model for a multi-product, multi-period vaccine supply chain network that incorporates injection centers and heterogeneous storage conditions, including cold and ultra-cold refrigeration. The model captures key operational decisions such as distribution center location, vaccine allocation, and storage configuration under capacity and demand constraints, while ensuring no shortage at injection centers. To efficiently solve large-scale instances, a tailored genetic algorithm (GA) is proposed. The main achievements of this research are as fol
