The clinical presentation of hantavirus infections in India is unclear. We report here a case of hantavirus infection in a 46 year old quarry worker presenting with fever, abdominal pain, jaundice, thrombocytopenia and renal dysfunction. Seroconversion and rising anti-hantavirus IgG titers were taken as evidence of hantavirus infection. Clinicians should consider hantavirus infections in the differential diagnosis of acute febrile illness along with scrub typhus, leptospirosis and dengue.

Our aim was to study the prevalence, age-wise distribution, and clinical spectrum of congenital heart disease (CHD) at a multi-speciality corporate hospital in North India. A retrospective analysis of records of 10,641 patients over a five-and-a-half year period was done. Clinical examination, echocardiography and color doppler were used as diagnostic tools. Melioidosis is sporadically reported from various parts of India. We present a case series from south India, highlighting the varied manifestations of the disease. Seven cases of culture-proven melioidosis are presented in whom Burkholderia pseudomallei were isolated from aspirate or blood. OBJECTIVE: To identify causative bacteria from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of children with meningitis and analyse various clinical and laboratory parameters.
METHODS: Over a 20 month period, September 1994 to April 1996, one hundred episodes of acute bacterial meningitis in children aged 1 month-12 years were studied in a tertiary urban hospital in South India. Organisms were isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in 35% of cases. Among infants and children, the two major pathogens were H. influenzae (17%) and S. pneumoniae (12%).

A centre for trans-telephonic electrocardiographic monitoring (TTEM) was established at the Escorts Heart Institute in May 1996. We have reviewed our experience in the first 398 patients. There were 321 males (81%) and 77 females (19%); their age range was 1 month to 95 years. Fourteen patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) were studied. The common clinical manifestations were recurrent sore throat, sinusitis, respiratory infections, diarrhea, and malnutrition. All had low IgG, with normal cell-mediated immunity. Treatment with immunoglobulin and/or plasma was effective in most of them. There were no severe adverse events with the therapy.

The first autopsy study of a child with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome in India is reported. A 2-year-old girl with failure to thrive and pneumonia died in our hospital. Antibodies to HIV were detected in the serum by ELISA and Western blot techniques. The autopsy findings included precocious involution of the thymus, splenic atrophy, lymphoid interstitial pneumonia and cryptosporidiosis of the colon.
