Psychological aspects of albinism: an exploratory study with Nigerian (Igbo) albino subjects.

This paper reviews some studies done on the psychological aspects of albinism. Studies on the intellectual ability of albinos produce equivocal results. Results from personality studies seem more consistent and show albinos to be more emotionally unstable than non-albinos. This paper also reports a study by the author which examines the phenomenon of albinism from the albino's viewpoint. It examined the responses of three undergraduate albino subjects--one female and two males--to the author's request for each to write an essay on the merits and demerits of being an albino based on personal ex

Brains in sync, friends in empathy: interbrain neural mechanisms underlying the impact of interpersonal closeness on mutual empathy.

Many everyday empathetic experiences arise within our social interactions and depend significantly on interpersonal closeness. However, the interbrain processes underlying social-oriented empathy by interpersonal closeness remain unclear. To address this gap, we conducted a dyadic social judgement task with dyads of friends and strangers, where targets received social evaluative feedback and empathizers observed the scenario in different experimental trials. Results showed that dyads of friends exhibited greater affect sharing than strangers when witnessing their partners being accepted or rej

Emotional reactivity and eating disorder related attitudes in response to the trier social stress test: An experimental study in people with anorexia nervosa and with bulimia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: In order to experimentally asses the role of socio-emotional problems in Eating Disorder (ED) psychopathology, we have measured affective states and ED-related attitudes in response to an acute psychosocial stress and their relationships with interpersonal sensitivity in people with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN). METHODS: Twenty-one women with AN, 21 with BN and 27 healthy women underwent an acute psycho-social challenge, the Trier Social Stress Test. Anxiety feelings, hunger perception, amount of desired food and body dissatisfaction were measured throughout the

Interpersonal violence in the lives of urban American Indian and Alaska Native women: implications for health, mental health, and help-seeking.

OBJECTIVE: We surveyed American Indian/Alaska Native (AIAN) women in New York City to determine the prevalence of 3 types of interpersonal violence among urban AIAN women and the behavioral health and mental health factors associated with this violence. METHODS: Using a survey, we questioned 112 adult AIAN women in New York City about their experiences with interpersonal violence, mental health, HIV risk behaviors, and help-seeking. The sampling plan utilized a multiple-wave approach with modified respondent-driven sampling, chain referral, and target sampling. RESULTS: Among respondents, ov

The interplay among narcissistic vulnerability, interpersonal sensitivity, and metacognitive integration: A network analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) involves disturbances in self-regulation, interpersonal functioning, and personality organization. Although traditionally characterized by grandiosity, contemporary models suggest that grandiose self-states coexist with vulnerable features such as shame, emotional dysregulation, and hypersensitivity to rejection. Recent evidence indicates that metacognitive impairments may underlie both grandiose and vulnerable narcissistic presentations; however, no study has examined how metacognition interacts with personality traits and interpersonal diff

Intersection of age and gender: Links between negative interpersonal interactions and both blood pressure and mood in daily life.

OBJECTIVE: Both age and gender have been identified as unique moderators of the association between negative interpersonal interactions and affective and physiological stress responses to these interactions. However, evidence is lacking on intersectional effects, with limited data on how gender differences in affective and physiological responses to interpersonal stress vary by age. The present study tests the hypothesis that age and gender interact to moderate the associations between acute exposure to negative interpersonal stressors and concurrent stress responses in daily life, assessed wi

Impact of dissociation and interpersonal functioning on inpatient treatment for early sexually abused adults.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the possible predictors of treatment outcome in early chronically sexually abused adults. The current study aimed to investigate what impact initial levels of dissociation and pre-treatment negative change in interpersonal functioning have on treatment response after 3 months of first-phase trauma inpatient treatment as well as after a period of 1 year the patients returned to their usual lives. METHODS: The sample comprised 48 inpatients with childhood sexual abuse histories and mixed trauma-related disorders who were examined at discharge and prospectively

Covert or connected: Motivations for online and interpersonal reassurance-seeking in OCD.

Interpersonal reassurance-seeking is a common anxiety-management strategy used by individuals with a range of disorders, but can be particularly repetitive and exacting among individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Although this strategy yields short-term relief, it also comes at a cost, creating frustration and straining relationships. Non-interpersonal sources of reassurance-such as the internet-have been less thoroughly studied, but may offer unique advantages. In this mixed-methods study, we explored the differentiating benefits and drawbacks of interpersonal and online reass

Interpersonal value regulates infection-risky social contact across 61 societies.

Interpersonal contact is essential for cooperation and care, but it also provides a route for pathogen transmission between individuals. Hence, a key challenge for social organisms involves maintaining beneficial social contact while also limiting exposure to infection risks. Existing proposals suggest that this trade-off is guided by the interpersonal value of specific social targets. In addition, ecological and cultural factors, including historical pathogen prevalence, individualism-collectivism, tightness-looseness, and relational mobility, might also shape how people avoid pathogens. To t

The cognitive-interpersonal maintenance model of anorexia nervosa revisited: a summary of the evidence for cognitive, socio-emotional and interpersonal predisposing and perpetuating factors.

AIM: To describe the evidence base relating to the Cognitive-Interpersonal Maintenance Model for anorexia nervosa (AN). BACKGROUND: A Cognitive-Interpersonal Maintenance Model maintenance model for anorexia nervosa was described in 2006. This model proposed that cognitive, socio-emotional and interpersonal elements acted together to both cause and maintain eating disorders. METHOD: A review of the empirical literature relating to the key constructs of the model (cognitive, socio-emotional, interpersonal) risk and maintaining factors for anorexia nervosa was conducted. RESULTS: Set shifting

Digital disconnection: A systematic review of phubbing behavior.

Phubbing, or snubbing others in face-to-face interactions by attending to one's phone, has become an increasingly pervasive social behavior with important psychological and relational consequences. This systematic review, following PRISMA guidelines, synthesizes empirical research from the past decade to examine the antecedents, consequences, and mechanisms of phubbing across social contexts. A comprehensive search of the ScienceDirect database identified 22 peer-reviewed studies spanning romantic relationships, friendships, family interactions, educational environments, and workplace settings

Investigating Communication Support Strategies as 'Micro-Interventions': A Conceptual-Methodological Framework Applying Realist Evaluation and Relevance Theory.

BACKGROUND: Communication Partner Training is widely applied in speech and language therapy practice, premised on the idea that communication support strategies can optimise conversations involving persons with communication disabilities. The pragmatic mechanisms by which these communication support strategies work in the moment of the conversation, remain under-theorised. AIMS: We present a conceptual-methodological framework applying realist evaluation and using relevance theory as the 'theory engine' of the evaluation. MAIN CONTRIBUTION: This paper situates communication support strategie

Losing One's Partner, Losing One's Self: Helping a Patient Process the End of an Early Romantic Relationship Through Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

The literature on the psychotherapeutic treatment of individuals suffering from the dissolution of a significant romantic relationship is sparse, especially with regard to those who continue to reflect upon and struggle with a romantic breakup long after the event itself. The present case study explores the psychodynamically-oriented treatment of a young adult patient, with a focus on helping the patient process the ending of a significant romantic relationship from her late adolescence. A twice-weekly, long-term treatment provided a collaborative space to mourn the lost relationship, while fa

The tyranny of relationality: Psychosocial implications of Ronald Fairbairn's "object-seeking".

The paper revisits Fairbairn's concept of "object-seeking", situating it within the complex, often fraught relational dynamics between self and other in everyday life. Adopting a psychosocial lens, it explores how this "old" idea can generate new possibilities for sociopolitical critique. The discussion begins by contextualising Fairbairn's thinking within his biography, foregrounding the interplay between contextual relations and social relations. It then revisits object-seeking as the primary libidinal force binding individuals to groups, culture, and institutions. From there, the paper exam

The social effects of musical and lyrical content.

Music is a central component of human experience and a pervasive form of cultural engagement across societies. This review synthesizes evidence on its prosocial and antisocial effects and underlying mechanisms. Across experimental, field, and longitudinal studies, music exposure is associated with both beneficial and detrimental interpersonal outcomes, including helping behavior, aggression, prosocial decision-making, and intergroup attitudes. Evidence indicates that exposure to relaxing, melancholic, or prosocially themed music is generally associated with increased empathy, cooperation, and

Developing loneliness interventions for people with personality disorders: A call to action.

Loneliness is common in personality disorders (PDs) and may contribute to their severity and persistence. Systematic research on loneliness interventions for PD is sparse but clearly needed. According to the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders, loneliness may be related to personality functioning and may link to domains of self (identity and self-direction) and interpersonal functioning (empathy and intimacy). A deeper understanding of the interaction between perceived loneliness and individual dysfunction across these domains is essential for establishing novel psychological interventi

Does sociodemographic disadvantage moderate the impact of motherwise? Findings from a randomized controlled trial.

Evidence supports the positive impact of MotherWise, an individual-oriented relationship education program delivered to perinatal women and birthing people from underresourced communities, on relationship skills, attitudes, and individual and relationship functioning. This study examined whether individuals' sociodemographic disadvantage was associated with (a) preprogram levels and (b) differential program effects. Participants (Mage = 28 years) were randomly assigned to MotherWise (n = 512) or a control group (n = 437). Most participants identified as Hispanic (66%), had accessed government

Why friendship and loneliness affect our health.

Humans, like all monkeys and apes, have an intense desire to be social. The human social world, however, is extraordinarily complex, depends on sophisticated cognitive and neural processing, and is easily destabilized, with dramatic consequences for our mental and physical health. To show why, I first summarize descriptive aspects of human friendships and what they do for us, then discuss the cognitive and neurobiological processes that underpin them. I then summarize the growing body of evidence suggesting that our mental as well as our physical health and wellbeing are best predicted by the

Friendships in flux: A daily examination of friend continuity and associations with adolescent mood.

Although maintaining stable friendships is an important developmental task for adolescents, there is limited understanding of whether adolescents' friendships vary from day to day and predict changes in emotional well-being. Therefore, the current daily diary study aimed to characterize the day-to-day consistency of adolescents' close friendships and investigate whether feeling close to the same friends from 1 day to the next (daily friend continuity) predicted daily mood. Fourteen consecutive days of friendship nominations and mood assessments were collected from 195 11th-grade students (Mage
