The benefits of using semi-continuous and continuous models to analyze binge eating data: A Monte Carlo investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Change in binge eating is typically a primary outcome for interventions targeting individuals with eating pathology. A range of statistical models exist to handle these types of frequency distributions, but little empirical evidence exists to guide the appropriate choice of statistical model. METHOD: Monte Carlo simulations were used to investigate the utility of semi-continuous models relative to continuous models in various situations relevant to binge eating treatment studies. RESULTS: Semi-continuous models yielded more accurate estimates of the population, while continuous mo

A Comparison of Infectious Disease Forecasting Methods across Locations, Diseases, and Time.

Accurate infectious disease forecasting can inform efforts to prevent outbreaks and mitigate adverse impacts. This study compares the performance of statistical, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) approaches in forecasting infectious disease incidences across different countries and time intervals. We forecasted three diverse diseases: campylobacteriosis, typhoid, and Q-fever, using a wide variety of features (n = 46) from public datasets, e.g., landscape, climate, and socioeconomic factors. We compared autoregressive statistical models to two tree-based ML models (extreme gradient

Regression-based Proximal Causal Inference for Right-censored Time-to-event Data.

Unmeasured confounding is a major concern in obtaining credible inferences about causal effects from observational data. Proximal causal inference is an emerging methodological framework to detect and potentially account for confounding bias by carefully leveraging a pair of negative control exposure and outcome variables, also known as treatment and outcome confounding proxies. Although regression-based proximal causal inference is well-developed for binary and continuous outcomes, analogous proximal causal inference regression methods for right-censored time-to-event outcomes are currently l

Latent change score modeling as a method for analyzing the antidepressant effect of a psychosocial intervention in Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Developing and evaluating interventions for patients with age-associated disorders is a rising field in psychotherapy research. Its methodological challenges include the high between-subject variability and the wealth of influencing factors associated with longer lifetime. Latent change score modeling (LCSM), a technique based on structural equation modeling, may be well suited to analyzing longitudinal data sets obtained in clinical trials. Here, we used LCSM to evaluate the antidepressant effect of a combined cognitive behavioral/cognitive rehabilitation (CB/CR) intervention in A

Gaussian process based bayesian semiparametric quantitative trait Loci interval mapping.

In linkage analysis, it is often necessary to include covariates such as age or weight to increase power or avoid spurious false positive findings. However, if a covariate term in the model is specified incorrectly (e.g., a quadratic term misspecified as a linear term), then the inclusion of the covariate may adversely affect power and accuracy of the identification of quantitative trait loci (QTL). Furthermore, some covariates may interact with each other in a complicated fashion. We implement semiparametric models for single and multiple QTL mapping. Both mapping methods include an unspecifi

Bias reduction in g-computation for covariate adjustment in randomized clinical trials.

G-computation is a powerful covariate adjustment method for analyzing randomized clinical trials. It typically relies on fitting canonical generalized linear models. However, this could be problematic when the sample size or event number is small relative to the number of covariates. Common issues include the underestimation of the variance and the potential nonexistence of maximum likelihood estimators. Bias reduction methods are commonly employed to address these issues, including Firth correction, which guarantees the existence of corresponding estimates. Yet, their application within g-com

Competing-triggering effect models for multitype recurrent event data.

Multitype recurrent events frequently arise in lifetime data analysis. It is reasonable to assume that previously occurred events can trigger more events to come, either of homogeneous or of heterogeneous categories. Previous work has focused on nonlinear triggering models for the effects of previous events when there is only a single event type. The standard approach is a proportional intensity model, which captures both the magnitude of the triggering effect and its decay over time via a complicated function of time. We propose a general Cox-type structure for modeling the triggering effects

Pseudo-observation regression for sequentially truncated data.

In observational cohort studies with complex sampling schemes, truncation arises when the time to the event of interest is observed only when it falls below or exceeds another random time, i.e., the truncation time. In more complex settings, observation may require a particular ordering of event times; we refer to this extension of the traditional paradigm as sequential truncation. Nonparametric and semiparametric maximum likelihood estimators have been developed recently to estimate the distribution of the event time of interest in the presence of sequential truncation. In this paper, we deve

Distinguishing cause from effect in psychological research: An independence-based approach under linear non-Gaussian models.

Distinguishing cause from effect - that is, determining whether x causes y (x → y) or, alternatively, whether y causes x (y → x) - is a primary research goal in many psychological research areas. Despite its importance, determining causal direction with observational data remains a difficult task. In this study, we introduce an independence-based approach for causal discovery between two variables of interest under a linear non-Gaussian model framework. We propose a two-step algorithm based on distance correlations that provides empirical conclusions on the causal directionality of effects und

A zero- and K-inflated mixture model for health questionnaire data.

In psychiatric assessment, Item Response Theory (IRT) is a popular tool to formalize the relation between the severity of a disorder and the associated responses to questionnaire items. Practitioners of IRT sometimes make the assumption of normally distributed severities within a population; while convenient, this assumption is often violated when measuring psychiatric disorders. Specifically, there may be a sizable group of respondents whose answers place them at an extreme of the latent trait spectrum. In this article, a zero- and K-inflated mixture model is developed to account for the pres

A retrospective statistical analysis of the Fusarium keratitis epidemic of 2004-2006.

PURPOSE: A retrospective statistical analysis of the Fusarium keratitis epidemic of 2004-2006 was performed. METHODS: Poisson and binomial probability distributions were performed in conjunction with statistical data reported from Singapore's Fusarium keratitis outbreak in order to identify the earliest theoretical point in time that this outbreak and its cause could have been recognized. RESULTS: The outbreak in Singapore could, theoretically, have been recognized after only three months (three cases), P = 0.0067. The cause of the Singapore outbreak could, theoretically, have been determine

Robust propagation velocity estimation of gastric electrical activity by least mean p-norm blind channel identification.

The propagation of the gastric slow wave is one of the most important spatial characteristics of gastric electrical activity (GEA). The time delay estimation (TDE) is an effective approach to quantitatively assessing the propagation velocity of GEA. Traditional TDE analyses are developed under the condition reported that the background noise in GEA analysis is Gaussian distributed. Due to the effects of spikes and/or motion artifacts, the GEA obtained from gastric serosal electrodes often contains sharp transitions. This paper proposes robust time delay estimation based on least mean p-norm bl

Resampling-based multiple testing methods with covariate adjustment: application to investigation of antiretroviral drug susceptibility.

Identifying genetic mutations that cause clinical resistance to antiretroviral drugs requires adjustment for potential confounders, such as the number of active drugs in a HIV-infected patient's regimen other than the one of interest. Motivated by this problem, we investigated resampling-based methods to test equal mean response across multiple groups defined by HIV genotype, after adjustment for covariates. We consider construction of test statistics and their null distributions under two types of model: parametric and semiparametric. The covariate function is explicitly specified in the para

Combined osteolathyric effects of beta-aminopropionitrile and penicillamine on Xenopus embryos: statistical comparison with dose-addition and independence.

The combined osteolathyric effects of beta-aminopropionitrile (beta APN) and penicillamine (PNC) on developing Xenopus embryos were determined and compared with theoretical effects for the dose-addition and independence models. The testing protocol utilized a 1.2-factor matrix design that generated two single chemical and seven mixture concentration-response curves within 36 treatments. Testing was for 96-h with daily solution removal and replacement. The chi 2 goodness-of-fit test was used to compare experimental responses with theoretical responses. Response curve analyses indicated, in gene

A family study of panic disorder: reanalysis using a regressive logistic model that incorporates a sibship environment.

Previous analysis of affection status in parents and siblings of 117 probands with panic disorder by a log-linear model for binary pedigree data found a common concordance across biological first-degree relatives and no spouse association [Hopper JL, Judd FK, Derrick PL, Burrows GD: Genet Epidemiol 4:33-41, 1987]. In this paper the data were reanalyzed using a regressive logistic model that modelled both vertical transmission and a shared sibship environment. Ascertainment correction was made by a) an "ascertainment assumption-free" procedure, following Ewens and Shute [Theor Pop Biol 30:388-4

Modeling of the chest wall response to prolonged bracing in pectus carinatum.

Pectus carinatum is a chest wall deformity that is often treated through the wearing of an external brace. The treatment of the deformity could benefit from a greater understanding of chest wall characteristics under prolonged loading. These characteristics are difficult to model directly but empirical studies can be used to create statistical models. 185 patients from 2018-2020 received bracing treatment. Data on the severity of the deformity, treatment pressures, and time of wear were recorded at the first fitting and all subsequent follow-up visits. This data was analyzed using a statistica

Comparison of procedures to assess non-linear and time-varying effects in multivariable models for survival data.

The focus of many medical applications is to model the impact of several factors on time to an event. A standard approach for such analyses is the Cox proportional hazards model. It assumes that the factors act linearly on the log hazard function (linearity assumption) and that their effects are constant over time (proportional hazards (PH) assumption). Variable selection is often required to specify a more parsimonious model aiming to include only variables with an influence on the outcome. As follow-up increases the effect of a variable often gets weaker, which means that it varies in time.

Predicting Valley Fever Outbreaks: Novel Mechanistic Models Incorporating Climate and Ecological Interactions.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) is an environmentally acquired fungal infection endemic to the arid Americas, presenting a growing public health challenge as changing environmental patterns threaten to amplify exposure risks across both established and newly recognized endemic zones. Historically, forecasting efforts have relied on statistical correlations with meteorological variables. These phenomenological models often fail to capture the complex, non-linear interactions between the saprobic (environmental) and parasitic (host) life cycles of Coccidioides, particularly under non-stationar

Evaluating Informative Cluster Size in Cluster Randomized Trials.

In cluster randomized trials, the individual-average treatment effect (i-ATE) can be different from the cluster-average treatment effect (c-ATE) when informative cluster size (ICS) is present, that is, when treatment effects or participant outcomes depend on cluster size. In such scenarios, mixed-effects models and generalized estimating equations (GEEs) with exchangeable correlation structure are biased for both the i-ATE and c-ATE estimands, whereas GEEs with an independence correlation structure or analyses of cluster-level summaries are recommended in practice. However, when cluster size i

Parametric and nonparametric propensity score weighting analysis with subgroup covariate balance.

Estimating the causal treatment effects by subgroups is important in observational studies when the treatment effect heterogeneity is present. Existing propensity score methods rely on a correctly specified propensity score model. Model misspecification results in biased treatment effect estimation and covariate imbalance. We proposed a method for the propensity score analysis with controlled subgroup balance (G-SBPS) to achieve covariate mean balance in all subgroups. We further incorporated nonparametric kernel regression for the propensity scores and developed a kernelized G-SBPS (kG-SBPS)
