Relationship between motion sickness susceptibility and vestibulo-ocular reflex gain and phase.

BACKGROUND: It has been proposed that individual susceptibility to motion sickness is related to the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) through the activation of the velocity storage mechanism. OBJECTIVE: We investigated whether motion sickness level was related to the gain and phase of the VOR. METHODS: VOR gain and phase were measured in 214 subjects while they rotated in yaw at 0.01 Hz, 0.02 Hz, 0.04 Hz, 0.08 Hz, and 0.16 Hz in darkness, and results were compared to the severity of symptoms the subjects experienced during subsequent tests to provoke motion sickness. These tests included cross-…

Prevalence, Predictors, and Prevention of Motion Sickness in Zero-G Parabolic Flights.

INTRODUCTION: Zero-G parabolic flight reproduces the weightlessness of space for short periods. However, motion sickness may affect some fliers. The aim was to assess the extent of this problem and to find possible predictors and modifying factors. METHODS: Airbus zero-G flights consist of 31 parabolas performed in blocks. Each parabola consisted of 20 s of 0 g sandwiched by 20 s of hypergravity of 1.5-1.8 g. The survey covered N = 246 person-flights (193 men, 53 women), ages (M ± SD) 36.0 ± 11.3 yr. An anonymous questionnaire included motion sickness rating (1 = OK to 6 = vomiting), Motion S…

Inter-hemispheric desynchronization of the human MT+ during visually induced motion sickness.

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is triggered in susceptible individuals by stationary viewing of moving visual scenes. VIMS is often preceded by an illusion of self-motion (vection) and/or by inappropriate optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) responses associated with increased activity in the human motion-sensitive middle temporal area (MT+). Neuroimaging studies have reported predominant right hemispheric activation in MT+ during both vection and OKN, suggesting that VIMS may result from desynchronization of activity between left and right MT+ cortices. However, this possibility has not been …

Motion sickness prevention by an 8-Hz stroboscopic environment during air transport.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research has shown that retinal slip can be a significant factor in causing motion sickness. Stroboscopic illumination may prevent retinal slip by providing snapshots of the visual environment that are brief enough so each image is stationary on the retina. METHODS: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an 8-Hz stroboscopic environment as a motion sickness countermeasure for passengers during a nauseogenic flight in a helicopter. The study population was comprised of 18 motion sickness susceptible subjects. Subjects completed a motion sickness …

Musk shrews selectively bred for motion sickness display increased anesthesia-induced vomiting.

Susceptibility to motion sickness is a predictor of postoperative nausea and vomiting, and studies in humans suggest that genetic factors determine sensitivity to motion sickness. The aim of the current study was to determine if a preclinical model could be selectively bred for motion-induced emesis and to assess a potential relationship to anesthesia-induced emesis. Musk shrews were tested for motion-induced emesis using a shaker plate (10min, 1Hz, and 4cm of lateral displacement). Animals were rank ordered for motion-induced emesis and selectively bred to produce high and low response strain…

Sensory conflict compared in microgravity, artificial gravity, motion sickness, and vestibular disorders.

UNLABELLED: Perceptual disturbances and motion sickness are often attributed to sensory conflict. We investigated several conditions: head movements in microgravity, periodic motions in 1-g, and locomotion with vestibular disorders. In every case, linear vectors such as linear and gravitational acceleration are crucial factors, as previously found for head movements in artificial gravity, and thus the importance of measuring linear vectors emerges as a common theme. By modeling the sensory conflict between the vestibular and somatosensory systems, we computed a measure of linear conflict known…

Motion sickness with combined lateral and roll oscillation: effect of percentage compensation.

BACKGROUND: Both lateral acceleration and roll through the force of gravity produce lateral forces. On a tilting-train the tilt offsets lateral acceleration so as to improve the physical comfort of passengers, but motion sickness is believed to increase as the lateral force is reduced by increased roll (i.e., as the percentage roll compensation is increased). OBJECTIVES: We investigated how motion sickness caused by combined lateral acceleration and roll displacement depended on the percentage compensation. METHOD: There were 8 groups of 20 subjects who were exposed for up to 30 min to vario…

Motion sickness with fully roll-compensated lateral oscillation: effect of oscillation frequency.

BACKGROUND: During lateral acceleration, the addition of an appropriate roll motion can improve comfort, but some combinations of lateral and roll motion increase motion sickness. OBJECTIVES: To determine how motion sickness caused by lateral oscillation fully compensated by roll oscillation (so subjects feel no lateral acceleration) depends on the frequency of oscillation and compare sickness with that caused by uncompensated lateral oscillation. METHOD: A total of 160 subjects (8 groups of 20) were exposed for 30 min to fully roll-compensated sinusoidal lateral oscillation at one of 8 freq…

EEG effects of motion sickness induced in a dynamic virtual reality environment.

The Electroencephalogram (EEG) dynamics which relate to motion sickness are studied in this paper. Instead of providing visual or motion stimuli to the subjects to induce motion sickness, we employed a dynamic virtual-reality (VR) environment in our research. The environment consisted of a 3D surrounding VR scene and a motion platform providing a realistic situation. This environment provided the advantages of safety, low cost, and the realistic stimuli to induce motion sickness. The Motion Sickness Questionnaire (MSQ) was used to assess the sickness level, and the EEG effects on the subjects …

Estimation of effects of visually-induced motion sickness using independent component analysis.

To quantify the effect of visually-induced motion sickness on the autonomic nervous system, the authors previously proposed a new physiological index rho max representing the maximum cross-correlation coefficient between blood pressure variability and heart rate variability whose frequency components are limited to the Mayer wave band. However, rho max requires measurement of continuous blood pressure with an expensive and bulky measuring device. In the present study, an easier method for obtaining rho max with measurement of neither continuous blood pressure nor ECG but using finger photoplet…

Motion sickness provoked by torso rotation predicts that caused by head nodding.

INTRODUCTION: Some degree of space motion sickness is experienced by at least 50% of astronauts early in flight. It is unpleasant and could be hazardous during an extravehicular activity or urgent re-entry in the first few days after launch. To date, there is no reliable ground-based test to predict who will be affected. METHODS: Head nodding (HN) in a supine position was used as a model of motion sickness caused by an unusual gravito-inertial environment. Torso rotation (TR) was used as a means of predicting susceptibility to development of symptoms caused by HN. Motion sickness was quantifi…

Relationship between temporal changes in cardiac parasympathetic activity and motion sickness severity.

Chemotherapy-induced nausea has been associated with a time-related decrease in cardiac parasympathetic activity. We tested the hypothesis that a time-related decrease in cardiac parasympathetic activity would also be associated with nausea and other motion sickness symptoms during illusory self-motion (vection). Fifty-nine participants (aged 18-34 years: 25 male) were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum to induce vection. Symptoms of motion sickness and an estimate of cardiac parasympathetic activity (respiratory sinus arrhythmia; RSA) were obtained at baseline and throughout a drum-rotati…

Experimentally induced motion sickness in fish: possible role of the otolith organs.

OBJECTIVE: Although the occurrence of motion sickness is largely attributed to sensory conflict, the reasons for the highly variable inter-individual susceptibility to motion sickness remain unclear. One cause may be asymmetry between otoconial masses in the right and left inner ear. This hypothesis has been supported by experiments in fish under conditions of prolonged weightlessness and parabolic flight. In swordtail fish (Xiphophorus helleri) we examined the extent to which a Coriolis force environment, which has a strong motion sickness-triggering effect, disturbs swimming behaviour or pro…

Gravitation biology using fish as model systems for understanding motion sickness susceptibility.

During the entire evolution of life on Earth, the development of all organisms took place under constant gravity conditions, against which they achieved specific countermeasures for compensation and adaptation. On this background, it is still an open question to which extent altered gravity such as hyper- or microgravity (centrifuge/spaceflight) affects the normal individual development, either on the systemic level of the whole organism or on the level of individual organs or even single cells. The present short review provides information on this topic, focusing on the effects of altered gra

Acupressure relieves the symptoms of motion sickness and reduces abnormal gastric activity.

CONTEXT: Acupuncture at the P6 or Neiguan point to treat nausea and vomiting has been practiced in China for many years. More recently, acupressure at P6 has been used successfully to decrease the symptoms of pregnancy sickness and with mixed results to decrease motion sickness. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an Acuband, a commercially available acupressure wristband, would relieve the symptoms of motion sickness. METHOD: 25 healthy subjects, aged 18 to 22 years, prescreened for susceptibility to motion sickness, were tested on 3 separate occasions in a rotating optokinetic drum with the fo…

Responses in skin microcirculation to vestibular stimulation before and during motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Observation of physiological changes during motion sickness is required to quantify the degree of sickness. The review of the literature does not show unifying results. An objective symptom of motion sickness is facial pallor. It reflects changes in skin microcirculation which have not been measured so far. METHODS: Eleven healthy volunteers susceptible to motion sickness were subjected to eccentric vertical axis rotation. The dynamics and the correspondence of the changes in skin blood flow in two segments, forehead and finger, were measured by laser Doppler flowmeter. RESULTS A…

Decreased susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to visual inversion in microgravity.

Head and body movements made in microgravity tend to bring on symptoms of motion sickness. Such head movements, relative to comparable ones made on Earth, are accompanied by unusual combinations of semicircular canal and otolith activity owing to the unloading of the otoliths in OG. Head movements also bring on symptoms of motion sickness during exposure to visual inversion (or reversal) on Earth because the vestibulo-ocular reflex is rendered anti-compensatory. Here, we present evidence that susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to visual inversion is decreased in a 0G relative to…
