Periodontitis as a systemic inflammatory disorder - implications for cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition associated with oral microbiome dysbiosis and the dominance of Gram-negative bacteria such as Porphyromonas gingivalis. It is characterized by progressive destruction of the supporting tissues of the tooth, leading to loss of connective tissue attachment, resorption of the alveolar bone, and, consequently to tooth loosening and loss. If left untreated, it leads to recurrent bacteremia and persistent systemic inflammation. The aim of this study is to discuss the mechanisms linking periodontitis to cardiovascular and neurodegenera

Hydroxyapatite Dental Inserts for Tooth Restoration: Stress and Displacement Analysis.

Hydroxyapatite (HAP) inserts minimize restoration contraction by constituting a major part of the restoration; however, their effect on the relaxation of tooth tissues has not been previously tested. Finite element analysis was employed to estimate stress and displacement when HAP inserts with a thickness of 1.7 mm or 4.7 mm and a diameter of 4.7 mm were used to substitute for dentin. The volumetric contraction of the composite during polymerization, simulated through steady-state heat transfer analysis, yielded a contraction rate of 3.7%. Descriptive statistics revealed that the incorporation

Mechanistic insights and therapeutic applications of metal-based nanomaterials in oral infectious diseases: Current advances and future perspectives.

Oral infectious diseases, including dental caries, pulpitis, periodontitis, peri-implantitis, and osteomyelitis of the jaws, are among the most prevalent conditions in dentistry, primarily caused by bacterial infections. Traditional treatment approaches, such as mechanical debridement and antibiotic therapy, face limitations due to bacterial resistance, inadequate infection control, and the inability to promote tissue regeneration effectively. Metal-based nanomaterials have emerged as promising candidates for addressing these challenges, offering broad-spectrum antibacterial activity, immunomo

Dental Oncology: A Pressing Necessity for Comprehensive Cancer Care.

Dental oncology is an emerging interdisciplinary field at the intersection of dentistry and oncology, addressing the unique oral health challenges faced by cancer patients. As cancer incidence continues to rise globally, the need for specialized dental care before, during, and after cancer treatment has become increasingly critical. Chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy often result in debilitating oral complications such as mucositis, xerostomia, osteoradionecrosis, infections, and altered dental development in pediatric patients. These complications not only compromise a patient's qu

NKUT: Dataset and Benchmark for Pediatric Mandibular Wisdom Teeth Segmentation.

Germectomy is a common surgery in pediatric dentistry to prevent the potential dangers caused by impacted mandibular wisdom teeth. Segmentation of mandibular wisdom teeth is a crucial step in surgery planning. However, manually segmenting teeth and bones from 3D volumes is time-consuming and may cause delays in treatment. Deep learning based medical image segmentation methods have demonstrated the potential to reduce the burden of manual annotations, but they still require a lot of well-annotated data for training. In this paper, we initially curated a Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) data

Controversies in Stoppage of Antiplatelet and Anticoagulant Medications Prior to Oral Surgery.

Dental procedures can pose a risk of bleeding, and it is not uncommon for dentists to consult prescribing physicians regarding a mutual patient's antiplatelet and anticoagulant medication to prevent excessive bleeding during or after an upcoming procedure. However, there has been a growing controversy in the dental community surrounding the stoppage of these medications prior to dental procedures. Some believe that stopping these medications prior to dental procedures is necessary to reduce the risk of bleeding complications, while others argue that stopping them can increase the risk of strok

The concept of "risk" and the emerging discipline of periodontal medicine.

Dental clinicians intuitively weigh patient risks for developing disease and use that information for making treatment decisions and recommendations. Periodontitis, for instance, is one oral disease with documented risk factors including smoking, specific plaque bacteria and diabetes mellitus. While this link between systemic disease and periodontitis was thought to be unidirectional, mounting evidence in the last decade suggests that the relationship may be bi-directional. Cross sectional and case control studies indicate that periodontitis may confer two and seven-fold elevations in risk for

Cold atmospheric plasma as an immunomodulator: suppression of T-cell hyperactivation and graft-vs-host disease via redox regulation.

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has garnered substantial attention in biomedical science, owing to its wide therapeutic applications in wound healing, disinfection, dentistry, cancer care, and inflammation. The anti-inflammatory effects of CAP have been studied, but, to our knowledge, there are no reports investigating its effect on T cell hyperactivation-associated pathologies. This study examines CAP's impact on antigen-driven and homeostatic T cell proliferation and its potential to prevent acute graft-vs-host disease (GvHD). CAP treatment significantly attenuated GvHD-associated mortality an

Antimicrobial, remineralization, and infiltration: advanced strategies for interrupting dental caries.

Dental caries, driven by plaque biofilm, poses a major oral health challenge due to imbalance in mineralization and demineralization. The primary objective in caries management is to maintain biofilm homeostasis while facilitating the repair and regeneration of dental hard tissues, thus restoring both structural integrity and functionality of affected teeth. Though antimicrobial and remineralization approaches haven shown promise, their standalone utilization without concurrent bacterial control or rebalancing lacks an integrated strategy to effectively arrest caries progression. Furthermore,
