BACKGROUND: Transfemoral osseointegrated prostheses, like other uncemented prostheses experience the risk of aseptic loosening and post-operative periprosthetic fractures, with an incidence between 3% and 30%. To date, however, osseointegrated off-the-shelf prostheses are manufactured in a limited number of sizes, and some patients do not meet the strict eligibility criteria of commercial devices. A customized osseointegrated stem was developed and a pre-clinical in vitro investigation of the stem was performed, to evaluate its biomechanical performance.

Bone expansion is when the existing bone at the implant site is split and separated to create a gap to widen it. This article introduces a novel concept of bone expansion for the ultrathin alveolar ridges to place dental implants with zero wastage of existing natural bone in long-term edentulous arches. Instead of using twist drills and piezo surgery kits, the bone is split with a surgical scalpel blade to prevent natural bone wastage. The split helps to expand the bone horizontally by using expanders to accommodate the smaller diameter implants. This technique was applied to 12 individuals to

Postpneumonectomy syndrome is a rare complication following pneumonectomy. Repositioning of the mediastinum via insertion of prosthetic implants into the postpneumonectomy space can provide symptomatic relief. We present a case of a man in his early 70s presenting with empyema necessitans 8 years after the implantation of silicon-saline prostheses for the management of postpneumonectomy syndrome. Excision of the chest wall sinus, re-do right thoracotomy and removal of the infected silicon-saline prostheses and postprocedural intrapleural irrigation led to resolution. There was no evidence of m

Primary lymphoma of bone is extremely rare. There are increasing reports of lymphoma arising in bone adjacent to metallic prostheses. Herein, we describe the case of a 76-year-old man who developed diffuse large B cell lymphoma in the tibia 3 years after total knee arthroplasty for osteoarthritis. A review of the literature has identified 11 other cases of lymphoma arising in the context of orthopaedic metallic implants. To our knowledge this is the first reported case of a primary lymphoma arising in bone adjacent to a knee prosthesis. Possible pathogenetic mechanisms may include chronic anti

BACKGROUND: Currently, no treatment is available for progressive retinal dystrophies. The fabrication of an implantable visual prosthesis seems to be possible now as a result of advances in the fabrication of extremely small micro-systems and their encapsulation in biocompatible materials.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The development of implantable visual prostheses is based on the fabrication of remotely controlled microelectrode arrays which have to be implanted in different target regions of the visual system. Prototypes of such systems have already been implanted in animal experiments and also

BACKGROUND: Because of the posterior mandible's shortened vertical bone height, using dental implants, there comes with special difficulties. It has been suggested that using short implants (≤8 mm) would prevent the need for subsequent surgical operations such as bone grafting. In total, 180 implants were inserted into the posterior mandible in 120 individuals who were part of this retrospective cohort research. Ninety patients in the short implant group (implants ≤8 mm) and 90 patients in the standard implant group (implants ≥10 mm) were split into two groups. Expert medical professionals ins

The Poly Implant Prosthèse™ (PIP) implants were withdrawn from market use in the United Kingdom on 31st March 2010 following Government issued advice. In June 2012 a final Government report was issued and during this period the majority of patients elected to have their prostheses removed. This study presents the operative findings of three surgeons. 517 patients were identified retrospectively from the implant database as having received PIP implants with a total of 1029 implants. 62 patients (124 implants) declined explantation after consultation and imaging. The data was recorded prospectiv

This report represents a retrospective analysis of preoperative echophonocardiographic studies in 118 patients who had surgery for the repair or replacement of malfunctioning prosthetic valves. A variety of prostheses implanted in the mitral, aortic, and tricuspid positions were assessed. The most frequent prosthetic malfunctions were regurgitation, thrombosis, ball variance, and infective endocarditis. There were echophonocardiographic abnormalities in 71% of the cases. The retrospective diagnosis of prosthetic dysfunction varied according to the type of prosthesis, type of malfunction, and s

Digital trauma amputations and digital agenesis strongly affect the functionality and aesthetic appearance of the hand. Autologous reconstruction is the gold standard of treatment. Unfortunately, microsurgical options and transplantation procedures are not possible for patients who present contraindications or refuse to undergo transplantation from the toe (e.g. toe-to-thumb transplantation). To address these issues, osseointegrated finger prostheses are a promising alternative. The functional assessments registered during follow-up confirmed the promising outcomes of osseointegrated prosthese

The appearance of the breast after wide local excision for carcinoma may be unsatisfactory. In 59 patients undergoing wide local excision a silicone prosthesis was inserted into the cavity at the time of primary surgery. Assessment of the cosmetic result was performed after 12 months by questionnaire and clinical examination. Four prostheses were removed within 1 year because of infection (two patients), wound breakdown (one) and pain (one). Seven prostheses were subsequently removed because of severe capsular contraction. Capsular contraction was more common in patients who had received radio

Background/Objectives: Short-stem prostheses were introduced as an alternative to conventional straight-stem prostheses. Despite their benefits, including minimally invasive approaches, soft-tissue- and bone-sparing implantation, and physiological load transfer to the metaphysis, data on postoperative complication and revision rates as well as on implant survival are scarce. Methods: A retrospective analysis of 1327 patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) using the Metha® short stem between 2006 and 2023 was conducted. Complication and revision rates were analysed for the i

To combat the high incidence of aseptic loosening for young patients and for patients with failed implants after resection for bone tumors, intramedullary cementless fixation of massive tumor implants was investigated. These implants consist of a hydroxyapatite coated titanium stem. To date, 47 of these prostheses have been inserted for the treatment of primary bone tumors. Radiographs indicate that the stems are osseointegrated. Radiolucent lines have not been seen between the implant and the bone. Bone remodeling changes have been observed. In several cases in which the implant was not seate

This surgical heritage article provides a historical overview of the most important early advances of vascular- and valvular surgery, that lead to the development of currently used vascular- and valvular prostheses and materials. The first writings describing techniques in vascular surgery mainly focussed on hemorrhage control and date from around 1600 B.C. The strategy of vessel ligation was first mentioned in Western literature around 200 B.C. In the 18th century, techniques of ligation were expanded towards attempts of vessel restoration. The first artificial vascular prosthesis was made in

INTRODUCTION: In the rehabilitation of total edentulous patients, lack of bone availability in posterior maxillary regions is common due to pneumatization of the maxillary sinus and posterior mandible due to the presence of the lower alveolar nerve. And to rehabilitate this type of patient, one of them is the use of short implants.
METHODS: The work aims to evaluate the success rate of treatment of short implants through a literature review. The search was carried out in august 2020 in the Pubmed (MedLine), Scopus and Embase databases, using the keywords: extra short implants, short implants,
