PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate effectiveness and safety of percutaneous CT-guided rib biopsy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT-guided core rib biopsies were performed in 249 consecutive patients between January 2002 and June 2016. Mean patient age was 64.8 years ± 13.8. Additional patient demographics, rib lesion characteristics, and procedural techniques were reviewed. Diagnostic yield was assessed, and complications were classified using SIR criteria.
RESULTS: Mean maximal diameter of 249 rib lesions was 2.7 cm ± 1.8, and 107 (43%) rib lesions had an associated extraosseous soft tissue comp

PURPOSE: Rib fixation remains a contentious issue in the current practice of orthopaedic, trauma and thoracic surgeons. Whilst rib fractures are undoubtedly associated with high levels of morbidity and mortality, the optimal surgical approach has not yet been fully elucidated in prospective trials and the volume of procedures performed remains low.
METHODS: We evaluated 21 consecutive patients who underwent surgical rib fixation either via a standard thoracotomy approach or following the introduction of a video-assisted technique with minimal thoracic incisions.
RESULTS: The average age of p

Background Rib fracture is the most common result of thoracic traumas. Intrapulmonary shunt, alveolar capillary membrane damage, intra-alveolar hemorrhage, and hypoxia may develop following rib fractures. Therefore, prompt treatment is important. The aim of this experimental study was to analyze the effects of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) on rib fractures to secure a speedier and more efficient treatment method. Materials and Methods The study involved 18 New Zealand white rabbits, randomly divided into three groups as Group 1, the sham group with no surgical intervention; Group 2, the control g

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare plasma cell neoplasm of the soft tissues characterized by the presence of a single, discrete lesion without evidence of systemic disease. Extramedullary plasmacytoma may disseminate into multiple myeloma, a systemic plasma cell disease.
METHODS: A rare case of extramedullary plasmacytoma of the cricoid cartilage with solitary plasmacytoma of the rib was reviewed.
RESULTS: The patient was found to have two discrete lesions; one of the cricoid cartilage and one of the lateral left fifth rib. Despite the presence of multiple tumors, the patient

Thoracic outlet syndrome is a mechanical space problem in which the brachial plexus and/or subclavian vessels are compressed. Arterial compression is least common and almost always associated with a bony anomaly. We present a case of a 49-year-old woman with a prominent first rib which caused a subclavian artery stenosis. There are many options for subclavian artery repair through open surgery. In high-risk patients, minimal invasive techniques are favorable. To date, few case reports exist on an endovascular artery repair combined with open first rib resection. While long-term follow-up will

We present a case of upper airway obstruction not previously reported in combination with traumatic rib fractures, pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema. A 95-year-old female presented with swelling of the face, neck and upper body. Stridor indicated upper airway obstruction and intubation was performed. A computed tomography revealed subcutaneous emphysema, pneumo-thorax, pneumomediastinum and rib fractures. Bilateral chest tubes were placed and the patient was admitted to intensive care. Upper airway obstruction should be considered in patients with chest trauma.

Bilateral chylothorax is a rare cause of pleural effusions. Here we report an unusual acute presentation of bilateral chylothorax following thoracic outlet surgery. Unique to this case was the disparate characteristics of pleural fluid analyses with an exudate on the left and a transudate on the right. This report describes the recognition and management of bilateral chylothoraces, an uncommon but potentially serious complication of this frequently performed surgical procedure.

BACKGROUND: Flail chest is a clinical condition observed in patients with blunt thorax trauma. Surgical stabilization methods performed on selected patients shorten the durations of mechanical ventilation and intensive care monitoring and significantly reduce the rates of ventilator-associated morbidity and mortality.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Patients treated and diagnosed with flail chest between 2009 and 2014 were studied retrospectively.
RESULTS: There were two groups: 10 patients in the group treated surgically and 10 patients in the group treated non-surgically. The groups were similar in t

The hydatid disease is a zoonosis endemic to rural countries, such as those in the Mediterranean region, South America, North Africa, Central Asia and China. Hydatid cysts commonly affect liver and lungs, but less than 100 cases of costal hydatidosis have been reported in the literature. While diagnosis of the disease in commonly affected organs is relatively easy, uncommon locations can prove to be challenging as is the case with costal hydatidosis. Imaging techniques can suggest the diagnosis, but sometimes it remains uncertain until surgery. The treatment is surgical, assisted by long-time

Osteosarcoma (OS) is a malignant tumor in which osteoid or bone is produced directly by tumor cells. Some OS cells are positive for cytokeratin (CK) and epithelial membrane antigen by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and this may lead to a misdiagnosis of metastatic carcinoma, particularly when the tumor location is unusual. On the other hand, gastrointestinal metastasis of OS is rare. We present the case of a 67-year-old Japanese man with a small intestinal intussusception due to metastasis of a CK-positive rib OS. The tumor cells were positive for CK, osteopontin and osteonectin by IHC and a diagn

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Rib fractures can cause significant problems in trauma patients, often resulting in pain and difficulty with respiration. To prevent pulmonary complications and decrease the morbidity and mortality rates of patients with rib fractures, currently there is a trend to provide surgical management of patients with flail chest. However, the indications for rib fracture fixation require further specification.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Past and current strategies are described according to a review of the medical literature. A systematic review was performed including current indicat

Results were evaluated by 2 independent physicians who rated improvement between pre- and postoperative photographs.

Pectus excavatum (PE) is the most frequent anterior chest deformity which may be frequently associated with connective tissue disorders. We performed microscopic analyses to better understand cartilage behavior and obtain clues on its pathogenesis. In 37 PE patients, none with Marfan syndrome, we analyzed costal cartilage by light microscopy, immunohistochemistry and transmission electron microscopy. Control tissue specimens were harvested from four patients without any connective tissue disease. In both control and PE patients, chondrocytes were on the average <15 µm in diameter and occupied

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical findings and management of myocardial injury secondary to blunt thoracic trauma and rib fracture in an adult horse.
CASE SUMMARY: A 6-year-old Warmblood gelding presented for treatment of blunt thoracic trauma. Sonographic examination of the thorax revealed a complete, mildly comminuted fracture of the left 5th rib with a fragment overlying the left atrium and coronary artery, hemothorax, and subjective left ventricular dyskinesis. Evidence of myocardial injury included atrial fibrillation, ventricular ectopy, and increased plasma cardiac troponin I concent

Two cats had chronic respiratory signs associated with pulmonary carcinoma. In each case, computed tomography demonstrated similar pulmonary masses, pleural fluid and osteolytic expansile rib lesions as a result of local costal spread. This is the first report of feline primary pulmonary adenocarcinoma with local spread to the ribs, causing osteolysis. Although pleural involvement is common with this neoplasm, local spread to ribs is rarely reported.
